There are 12 colleges of the University of Melbourne which admit undergraduate and postgraduate students, all on campus or within easy walking distance. College life has been an important aspect of the University of Melbourne for well over a century. The colleges provide both academic and pastoral support to resident students, as well as rich opportunities for extra-curricular activities and for developing friendships with other students from all faculties. Educational programs of small-group tutorials are supported by facilities such as libraries, computer rooms, and music practice rooms.

Residence in college offers security and comfort in fully furnished single rooms. Student rooms have Internet as well as telephone connections. Catering is provided by colleges, and communal dining creates opportunities to meet academic staff, professionals and guest speakers, as well as other students.

Limited self-catering facilities are provided by some of the colleges.

Living in College is often cheaper than living in rented accommodation, as well as more convenient.

College charges, include meals, utilities, and use of many facilities, as well as academic and personal support, opportunities for extra-curricular involvement, and the chance to belong to a friendly community. Typically, colleges only require payment for the academic year of 30 to 39 weeks, enabling students to lower costs by returning home during major vacations, but also offer accommodation for as many further weeks as students need. Scholarships and various forms of financial assistance are available in all colleges.

College students have the opportunity to participate in a rich cultural, social and sporting life, which is largely organised by each college student club. They enjoy access to individual college sporting resources in addition to the excellent sporting facilities offered on campus.

All colleges in the University of Melbourne are co-educational, and accept applicants regardless of gender or religion. The colleges vary in a number of ways, including in size and in religious affiliation, if any. To understand what is offered by individual colleges, it is important to contact the colleges which most interest you.

If you want to apply for a college place, fill in the College Application form available from the Colleges' website: www.colleges.unimelb.edu.au. the Intercollegiate Office, individual colleges, or the University's Student Support Services.

Applications, if possible before the end of November, should be made to one college only and can be completed and submitted through the colleges' website, or sent to: The Admissions Office, (Name of t h e college of first preference), Parkville, Victoria 3052, Australia.
