Introduction

The following dataset provides a snapshot of outcomes for students who finished Year 12 in 2016.

It has been compiled from data provided to the Queensland Curriculum & Assessment Authority (QCAA) by:

• Queensland schools

• the Department of Education and Training (DET)

• other learning providers

• the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC).

The data show that Queensland’s Year 12 students are graduating from high school with the skills and qualifications to follow a range of rewarding work, further education and training pathways.

There are explanatory notes about how to read the table included in the report, and some questions and answers about the data are also available.

Data sources

Data on the number of students who are completing, or have completed a school-based

apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT) were provided by the Department of Education and Training.

Data on the number of students participating in and completing an International Baccalaureate Diploma were provided by the International Baccalaureate Organisation.

Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre data is as at 16 February 2017, when February offers were released. Applicants were included if they had at least one preference for a Semester 1 course. Late applications and late offers were not included.

All other data included in the Year 12 outcomes report are provided by the QCAA.

Reading the table

Where a dash (–) appears in the tables it means that no data are applicable in this instance.

Data for visa students are not included in this report. A visa student is a student who is not a citizen or permanent resident of Australia. Visa students are not regarded as OP-eligible. They may qualify for an equivalent-OP.

Outcomes summary

School (top left) The school name.

Locality (top right) The city, town or suburb where the school is located.

SEP The number of students who received a Senior Education Profile (SEP). The SEP may include a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Tertiary Entrance (TE) Statement, a Senior Statement or a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA).

QCE The number of students who were awarded a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) at the end of Year 12.

QCEs were awarded to students who attained 20 credits by achieving a Sound Achievement or pass in the required pattern. Their program of studies must have included a minimum of 12 credits from core courses and 8 credits from any combination of other courses of study. To be awarded a QCE, students must also have met literacy and numeracy requirements.

QCIA The number of students awarded a QCIA. These students have engaged in a highly individualised learning program for their senior phase of schooling. Students may receive a Senior Statement and a QCIA.

VET The number of students awarded one or more vocational education and training (VET) qualifications. This includes qualifications of Certificate I, II, III, IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma. Students who are completing or completed a SAT are also included in this column.

SAT The number of students who are completing or have completed a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT).

OP The number of students who received an Overall Position (OP). To receive an OP a student must study 20 semester units of credit in QCAA-approved subjects with at least three subjects taken for four semesters. Students must also complete Year 12 and sit the Queensland Core Skills Test.

IBD The number of students awarded an International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD).

Senior Statement only The number of students who completed Year 12 and received a statement of results (Senior Statement) but did not qualify for a QCE, QCIA, VET qualification (including students who participated in a SAT), OP or IBD.

% with a QCE, VET, SAT or IBD

The percentage of Year 12 students who were awarded at least one of the following: QCE, VET (including students who participated in a SAT), IBD.

% QTAC applicants with a tertiary offer

The percentage of students who applied for and received an offer of a tertiary place through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). The percentage of students entering VET courses through QTAC is understated because QTAC data on VET includes only full-time students entering a VET diploma. The data does not include part-time diplomas, certificates, apprenticeships or traineeships.

The number of students awarded one or more VET qualifications at different levels.

Certificate I courses develop basic skills required by industry or for participation in life and further learning. Certificate II courses develop skills in specific career-related fields as preparation for employment. Certificate III courses develop the ability to apply a range of well developed work skills in specific career fields. Apprenticeships usually involve a Certificate III level course. Certificate IV courses usually develop supervisory and/or advanced technical skills. These often build upon skills acquired in the workplace and/or Certificate III courses. Diploma and Advanced Diploma courses develop specialised knowledge and skills for paraprofesional work and/or further learning.

VET Dip or AdvDip unit at school

The number of students who completed a university subject, a VET Diploma unit or a VET Advanced Diploma unit while at school.

OP distribution OP 1–5 OP 6–10 OP 11–15 OP 16–20 OP 21–25

The number of students with an OP between the identified bands. When added together, the total number of students in these OP bands is the same as the total number of OP-eligible students at the school (i.e. the number in the OP column in the outcomes summary).

An OP is a student’s statewide rank based on overall achievement in QCAA-approved subjects. It indicates how well the student has done in comparison to all other OP-eligible students in Queensland. Students are placed in one of 25 OP bands from 1 (highest) to 25 (lowest).
