Department of Computer Science & Engineering CIS101: Fundamentals of Computer System

Course outline (Autumn 2013)

OBJECTIVES:

CIS 101 provides a comprehensive coverage of computer systems and its fundamentals; to make the students understand the functioning of computer systems and its use for their respective fields. Students get extensive exposure to work with word processing, spreadsheet, database, web design, presentation software and solving linear program etc. At the end of the course, students should have acquired sufficient skills to be able to use computer effectively in business, economics, finance, management, communication and other important areas.

LECTUREPLAN Lecture 01-02

Fundamentals: Basic computer system organization (Von Neumann architecture) – Arithmetic/ Logic Unit, Memory Unit, Input unit, Output unit, Control unit.

Factors affecting speed of computer: RAM, cache memory, Math co-processor.

Networks & Computing models:Introduction, LAN, WAN etc. Desktop computing, client server, web based, cloud computing.

Lecture 03 - 04

Word Processing: Basics, formatting, preparing reports, research paper and CV.

Lecture 05 - 11

Spreadsheet:

 Introducing MS Excel, creating chart, formatting cells, referencing cell……..Quiz-1

 Working with built-in common functions (SUM, SUMIF, SUMIFS, MIN, MAX, CEIL, FLOOR, COUNT, COUNTIF, COUNTIFS,MEAN, AVERAGE, AVERAGEIF, IF, nested IF, SORT, LOOKUP, VLOOKUP, FILTER, DATE, DATE360, PMT)

 Pivot tables, Solvers, Introducing macros…….Quiz-2 Common Midterm Lecture 12, 13, 14 & 15

Database: Introducing MS-Access and working with database table, form, and queries……Quiz-3 Lecture 16, 17, 18 & 19

Web design: Static Web site development……….Quiz-4 Lecture 20&21

Presentation: Introducing MS-PowerPoint, Design slides; include features like animation, sound, video for presentation.
