Final Assessment of Autumn-2020 Program: B.Sc. Engg. (EEE)

Course Code: EEE-4707 Course Title: Power Plant Engineering Time: 5 hours (Writing -4 hours 30

minutes + 30 minutes submission time)

Full Marks: 50 (Written 30 + Viva/Viva-Quiz-20) [Answer each of the questions from the followings; Figures in the right margin indicate full marks. Answer script must be submitted through online method within 5 hours from starting time.

1(a). Discuss the advantages of Hydro-electric Power Plant (HPP) over Steam turbine power plant?

1(b). Classify various types of dams for HPP. What are the important factors should be considered when selecting site for HPP.

CO1 An,R 2 1(c). For a Hydroelectric power plant the following data is supplied:

Annual rainfall = 1000 mm.

Catchment area = 120 sq. km.

Effective head = 450 m.

Load factor = 40%

Yield factor to allow for run-off and evaporation loss = 50%

Efficiency of the power plant = 70%

Find out the (a) average power produced and (b) capacity of the power plant.

2(a). Write short notes on nuclear fuel. What advantages Uranium oxide (UO2) has over natural uranium.

2(c). A nuclear reactor uses U235as fuel. If the mass of the fuel is 1.2 kg and neutron flux is 1016per sec. calculate the power of reactor.

highly advantageous”, elaborate this statement?

4(a). Explain connected load, maximum demand and demand factor.

Evaluate the impact of these factors on a power plant.

CO1 C,E 2 4(b). What are the requirements of a base load power plant? CO1 R 2 4(c). The annual peak load on a 40 MW power station is 35 MW. The power

station supplies loads having maximum demands of 15 MW, 10 MW, 8 MW and 5 MW. The annual load factor is 40%. Find out average load, energy supplied per year, diversity factor and demand factor.

5(a). Concerning the ongoing power crisis in our country what could be the solution- establishing more conventional power plants or harnessing power from renewable energy sources. Defend your opinion with proper reasoning.
