Every morning, he wakes up at 5 o’clock and walks along the streets of Sankar to collect rubbish. People of Sankar put their rubbish in plastic bins and leave them in front of their houses. Bulbul walks from door to door to collect them.

Sometimes the bins are very dirty and they smell bad. But Bulbul does not mind. He takes out everything from the bins and puts them in a large plastic bag. He believes that all jobs are important. He works hard every day to keep this area clean.

Last month Bulbul became sick for two days. So, he could not come to collect the rubbish. The people of Sankar were in great trouble. They got piles of rubbish waiting in front of their houses. The whole area became dirty and unhygienic. When Bulbul got well, he came back to Sankar. He collected everything from the bins. Bulbul does not like to fall sick again. He knows, if he stops working for few days, the whole area will turn into a big dustbin.

3. Read the text and answer the following questions.

Begum Sufia Kamal, poet and social activist was born on 20 June 1911 in a landowning family of Shayestabad in Barisal. She was the daughter of Abdul Bari, a lawyer, and Sabera Banu. In accordance with aristocratic social practice of the time, Begum Sufia Kamal was given education at home. She learnt Urdu, Arabic and Persian from family tutors. She got lessons in Bangla from her mother and maternal uncle, Syed Mohammad Hossain. In 1923, she wrote her first story

“Sainik Bodhu” which was published in the Tarun. Her first book of poems “Sanjher Maya” was published from Kolkata in 1938. Author of more than a dozen volume of poetry, Sufia Kamal also wrote several volumes of short stories and an autobiography named “Ekale Amader kal”.

Sufia Kamal received nearly fifty major awards including Bangla Academy Award (1962), the Ekushey Padak (1976), the Independence Award (1997). She died in Dhaka on 10 November 1999.

The three boys tried and tried, but they couldn’t break the bundle of sticks. Then their father untied the sticks and his wife gave one stick to each of her sons. There were two more sticks and she gave one to her husband and kept one for herself. “Now,” she said, “Try to break your stick.” This time they all broke the sticks easily. Then the old farmer asked his sons, “Did you like my story?” “Yes, we did,” they replied. “What did you learn from it?” he asked. The wisest son answered, “We’re like these sticks. Together we’re strong.” “Good,” their father. “That’s right. Now you know why quarrelling is bad.”
