Description
This course may be aptly termed as the next step of the course “Composition” learners completed in the previous semester. Whereas in Composition basic reading and writing techniques are introduced, at this stage a more critical, thorough, creative, and analytical responses are sought. This course is designed to cultivate an understanding of the psychological, social, political, and practical significance of communication in English with special emphasis on academic writing to hone students’ spontaneous judgement and analysis.
Learners will be encouraged to develop their thinking and writing with confidence in ways that reflect their unique perspective and identity. They will learn and appreciate a range of styles and forms of expression through comprehending, inferring, summarizing, etc. They will also develop a habit of writing different types of essay in an academic context.
ILOs
This course is primarily designed to provide the students with opportunities for improving reading and writing skills. By the end of the course, the learners (you) should be able to:
▪ write for the intended readers of a text, and design or adapt texts to audiences who may differ in their familiarity with the subject matter.
▪ gain an understanding of critical reading and academic writing.
▪ demonstrate competence in Standard Written English, including grammar, sentence and paragraph/essay structure, coherence, and document design (including the use of the visual), and be able to use this knowledge to revise texts.
▪ produce cogent arguments that identify arguable issues, reflect the degree of available evidence, and take account of counter arguments.

Due to students’ limitation to go outside during lockdown embracing health hazard to buy books, all the lecture materials, soft copies of books and videos will be provided online (Google Drive link will be shared before each class on Facebook group page.)
Course Policy and Procedure
Attendance and Participation Policy
To succeed in this course, regular attendance is required. Please note that missing more than Six (6) classes for any reason may result in a zero for the participation/performance portion of your grade.
Make Up Work
All exams must be completed within the date assigned. If you turn in a paper late on your assigned day, or do not come to class on an exam day or test day, you will be penalized for that assignment, unless an alternate due date has PREVIOUSLY been approved.
Plagiarism
In writing classes, plagiarism most often occurs when students use someone else’s work or use direct reference from internet sources and submit it as their own. Plagiarism is a serious offence and will be treated as such. Any Plagiarized script will immediately receive an F grade.
Class Etiquette
During class meetings please refrain from chatting, texting, reading newspapers, or otherwise distracting yourself or other students from the lecture and from your note taking.
