No responsibility shall be borne by the Department of English and/or Bangladesh Army University of Science and Technology if any inconvenience or expense is incurred due to the information in this newsletter. Bangladesh Army University of Science and Technology (BAUST) offers undergraduate courses in six major academic programs. This calendar has been specially prepared for undergraduate students of the English Department at BAUST.

Although this calendar has been written primarily for students, study advisors, teachers and other involved staff will find it valuable as a reference work. This also includes various aspects of the course system such as rules and regulations regarding admission, grading system, performance evaluation, degree requirements, the course prerequisites, detailed course outline and courses offered in different terms. The graduate program courses focus on building capabilities to present and express topics and ideas clearly and fluently in the English language.

The revised curriculum incorporated in this calendar was approved by the academic council, BAUST for the English undergraduate students. Some of the information recorded in this calendar is likely to change from time to time.

Eligibility of Students for Admission in BA (Hons) in English

Admission Procedure

The BA (Hons) in English program aims to provide a modern and better humanities education that prepares students to be well-trained communicators to meet the needs of the national and international market. Through this program, students will develop their ability to understand the necessary techniques to deal with the economic, social, political and technological environment of professional companies, especially quantitative techniques and communication skills. Providing modern and up-to-date knowledge to arts graduates to competently, meaningfully and successfully interact with the competitive forces of the global professional environment.

Increase oral and written competence, decision-making skills and sociability of future managers with integrated communicative and ethical knowledge. Assessment in laboratory subjects is done by assessing the student's performance in work during the lesson, viva-voce during laboratory hours and quizzes. A student's performance is measured by the number of credits satisfactorily completed and the weighted grade point average earned.

The number of quizzes in a course will be n+1, where n is the number of course credits. To be eligible to appear in the final examination, the candidate must attend an average of not less than 60% of the total lectures. The Controller of Examinations will issue the admit card only to the eligible candidates as per the rules and will send them to the concerned department/faculty and the head will distribute to the candidates.

Heads of department, proctor, advisor for student welfare (ASW) and dean may address the students at some intervals. The course does not require any guidance tests, as the nature of the work is entirely practical.

In each semester there are compulsory 5 (five) subjects and students must pass at least 3 (three) subjects in order to be promoted to the next higher semester. Emphasis will be placed on the terminology, techniques, figures of speech and forms of drama.

This course introduces students to the basics of English fiction (short story and novel) and the essay. This course is intended to familiarize students with the principles of psychology in relation to the educational process.

The Grading System

The overall performance of a student in a given course is based on a continuous assessment scheme. In theory courses, this continuous assessment is done through a series of quizzes, in-class assessment, in-class participation, homework, assignments and a term-based final exam. A letter grade with a certain number of marks is assigned to each course for which the student is registered.

A course in which a student receives an 'F' grade will not count toward credit requirements and the calculation of grade point average (GPA). The on-the-spot assessment scheme, which the individual teacher wishes to follow for the subject, will be published on the first day of class.

This course is designed to improve students' ability to communicate with competence, confidence and poise in public speaking situations with an emphasis on speaking with grammatical precision in an organized manner. This course will teach how to introduce yourself/someone else or ask how someone is doing or give and respond to good wishes, or start a conversation, etc. This course will show students what poetry is and what it does, how elements (such as words, sounds, emotion, images etc.) work together to make a poem and what to look for when reading verse.

This course will show students what drama is and what it does, how the elements (such as plot, story, trajectory, etc.) work together to make a play, and what to look for while reading a dramatic work. This course is designed to focus on the following key useful topics, categories and techniques for advanced reading-. After attending this course, students will be able to understand and analyze both literary and non-literary texts from a broader perspective. a) Russian formalism the new criticism b) structuralism.

This course will provide students with knowledge on how to write research papers, theses and articles. This course is designed to enable students to implement positive management techniques in their classrooms.
