CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the study

Masculinity is characteristic, pattern, orientation and tendency that build statement

quotation male identity.1 It describes that men are explicit, rational, aggressive, and intelligent. Masculinity also described as a traditional value from men’s attitude or men’s behavior that

believes courtesy and morals in public opinion. A man muscled body presents the image of

masculinity, his strength, his courage, his adventure, and many more. In some cultures,

masculinity may be an indicator of social status as much as wealth, race, or social class. In

western culture, for example, greater masculinity brings greater social status for males among

their peers.2

Masculinity is associated more commonly with men than boys.3 Masculinity in English culture or we said Victorian masculinity is men have a spiritual propriety, but in wealth were

also crucial. A part of that, education, manners and refined speech made the men as gentleman.4 Masculinity firstly appeared in the Industrial Revolution in Britain.5 It was between 1830s and 1860s, for the most part, a period of peace, man clearly did not feel threaten to be

called as soldier, etc. Some of the concepts of masculinity are such religion, domesticity, and

gender role, imperialism, economy, athletic, manners and much more. While, other masculinity

occurred in United State of America (USA) was developed when the men's movement shown

since the feminism's movement reached its peak in the 1970s and 1980s. Then, in the early

1990s, the men's masculinity shown boldly, because gender atmosphere went to masculine and

shown the decrease of feminism.

According to Janet Saltzman Chafetz (1974, 35-36)6, the characteristic of masculinity has seven areas or forms in general culture. First is the image of men’s physic, second is men’s

function, third is men’s sexual desire, fourth is men’s emotion, fifth is men’s intellectual, sixth is

men’s personality, then, seventh is the other men’s areas concerning with ambition, proud,

egoistical, moral, trustworthy, competitor and adventure.

Janet Saltzman’s argument above describes so many aspects that could claim men are

masculine. We could point out men’s masculinity from their physic, function, sexual desire,

emotion, intellectual, and interpersonal and others.

By the appearance of masculinity in some countries, many subjects who support men's

movement or masculinity value. Some of them are Eisler and Skidmore's7. They studied masculinity and created the idea of 'masculine stress' in 1987, and Jeff Hearn and Keith Pringle,

they are publication in gender oppression, men, masculinity, childcare, and social, created about

1987-1996.8 Warren Farrell is the first modern masculist. Firstly he was a champion of feminism (in the early 1970s), and his ideology call for gender equivalence and his popular publication in

masculinity is "The Myth of Male Power."9

(12)

Men show their masculinity in their life, such as home, in the office or in the clubs. We

could see men’s masculinity; all depend on where the men lay. We also could see that men show

their masculinity to be different from women.

Take a sample for movies. We definitely could see men’s masculinity even in movies, the

masculinity could be seen more clearly than in the novel because we could visualize the

masculine aura from attitudes or physical appearances, such as men's muscular body. They

appeared in several movies through the main character, such as in James Bond, Mission

Impossible, Batman, Spiderman, Hercules, 309, Seraphim Falls, Ocean's trilogy, Die Hard,

Rambo and Rocky Balboa.

In those movies, masculinity is visible and showed the stronger effect of movie story. In

another movie, take concern of Casino Royale'007 movie, we could see that the masculinity

shown in the main character of James Bond. James Bond described as a man who has muscle in

his body. He is also a brave man and a kind of romantic (guy is the abstraction of a Neal Purvis’s

story from Ian Fleming).

Besides having an interesting narration, Casino Royale is created by a brilliant author

named Neal Purvis. He is the Casino Royale'007’s screenwriters and co-writers of the last three

James Bond films with his long-time collaborator Robert Wade.He had born opposite Hampton

Court, outside London. Neal studied cinematography at PCL in Central London, and received a

Film & Photography degree. In March 2004, he began writing a screenplay with his friend

(13)

Film, and Television Arts honored him and co-writer Paul Haggis with a best-adapted screenplay

nomination for the script of Casino Royale.10

Casino Royale'007 is the 21st film in the James Bond series based on the 1953 novel Casino Royale by Ian Fleming and the movie star by Daniel Craig as M16 agent or secret

agent.11 In this movie, the writers see that Bond’s characteristic is a character that strongly proves and shows the masculinity of a man. The character is a quiet character, soft talking, has

good performance, individual, and cruel to his enemy. For the writer itself, Bond’s Character in

Casino Royale is a unique character to analyze from the aspect of men’s masculinity.

It says so because the writer sees that the newest Bond has strong masculinity shifting

from the earlier Bond’s movies. The newest Bond represents gentle and masculine than earlier

Bond. Still, Bond is a good-looking man. He dislike to lose people hinders him. The new Bond

has not sophisticated guns instrument, but he is very skilled in fight by empty hand. For example,

in the early Bond’s movies, he uses dozen of rifles, shot guns, using radar. He could blow away a

plane and could to do everything with his guns. But, it does not happen on Bond’s Casino

Royale, because there is a border of guns action which partly show men’s masculinity such as

fight by empty hand. The writer sees that Bond’s Casino Royale is similar to others Bond’s

movies before, the late Bond is more masculine to face and hand his enemy by empty hand or

only by a gun against dozen enemies with guns. It is boldly different from the other Bond’s

movie using sophisticated gun only to execute his enemy. That is the shifting. Therefore, the

writer wants to do a deep masculinity research toward Bond’s character in Casino Royale'007’s

movie.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

A. Representation Theory

The content of representation has sense inside the culture. The word represents, according

to Stuart Hall in the content of cultural studies means, “using a language to say something

meaningful about, or to represent, the world meaningfully, to other people’.12 Representation is the production of the meaning of the concepts in our minds trough language. It is the link

between concept and language, which enables us to refer to either the ‘real’ world or ‘object’,

people or event, or indeed to imaginary world of fictional object, people, and events.13

To show or express what we thought into language and to understand by others, there are

two processes of representation or system of representation. First, system, which all sorts of

object, people, and events correlated with a set of concepts or mental representation, which we

carry around in our heads. Second, sign14 is organized into language and it is the existence of

common languages which enable us to translate our thoughts (concepts) into words, sounds or

images, and then to use these, operating as a language, to express meaning and communicate

thoughts to other people. Theoretically, the way language represents the sense could diverse

from three ways,15 that are reflective approach, intentional approach, and constructionist approach16.

12

Stuart Hall. Representation: Cultural Representation and Signifying Practices. (London: Sage Publication, ltd, 2008) cet. Ke-1, h,15.

13

Ibid, p.17 14

Ibid, p.18 15

Ibid, h,26. 16

(17)

The reflective approach clarifies the language that it has function to reflect truth. This

approach almost similar to the mimetic approach which functions as mirroring between the

literary art and the reality. While, the intentional approach clarify of sense decided by person

who use language. Therefore, it means that the speaker is the decider of the sense. The last is the

constructional approach. An approach uses in cultural studies. The constructional approach

would clarify the construction of sense toward concept and symbol.

While another sense of ‘represent’ comes from Giles and Tim Middleton in their book

Studying Culture’s, 1999, they said that representation has three senses, there are to stand in for

(menyimbolkan sesuatu), to speak on behalf of (mewakili sesuatu), and re-present

(menghadirkan kembali).17

From the theories of representation above, the writer will use the constructional approach,

it is an approach that does not represent the real world but construct the new world with the part

necessity from the representation maker. The representation is a meaning; it explains who makes

the representation. Representation of masculinity sees as the subject and object where is the

subject is movie and object is bond masculinity.18

Movie or Hollywood represented the masculine since 1950s toward their trend of

machismo's such as cowboy movies. In the last 1970s, Hollywood introduced the new

perspective in representation of masculinity that had more range such in term of patriarchy.

B. Janet Saltzman Chafet Concepts

18

Dan Sperber. Explaining Culture: A Naturalistic Approach. (Oxford: Blackwell Publisher, 1996) cet. Ke-1, h, 53.

(18)

Beside the constructional approach, the analysis uses masculinity of Janet Saltzman

Chafetz concepts (she is one of the most prominent feminist theorists committee to developing

scientific explanations of gender stratification in the 1960’s and early 1970’s). The characteristic

of Janet’s masculinity concepts has seven areas or forms in general culture. The first is the image

of men’s physic, it concerns virile, athletic, strengthen, and unconcern of appearance and aging,

it describes masculinity characteristic from men body whether it is virile and athletic, also men

power such as strong and brave. He is not afraid of anything and he is a savior for his women,

relatives, and himself. The second is the image of men’s function, it concerns breadwinner and

provider, it is about men as family’s backbone or for him self. The third is men’s sexual desire, it

concerns sexually aggressive, experience, and acceptable single status, where men have a

relation with women without emotion or love. The fourth is the image of men’s emotion, it

concerns his emotion stability or having self-control emotion. The fifth is the image of men’s

intellectual, it concerns logical thinking, intelligence, objective, and practice, those are

cleverness of men. The sixth is the image of men’s personality, it concerns of dominating,

disciplinarian, independent, and individualistic, where authority and responsibility men should

be done. Then, seventh is the other men’s areas, it is concerning of ambitious, proud, egoistical,

moral, trustworthy, decisive, competitive and adventure.19

Beside the representation theory and masculinity concept, there are mise-en-scene to

clarify the sign and symbol masculinity in the movie.

C. Mise-En-Scene

19

(19)

Mise-en-scene means “staging in action” and it was first applied to the practice of

directing plays20. Realism, mise-en-scene as a standard of value, however, raises several problems. Notions of realism change across cultures, through time, and even among

individuals.21 In film, mise-en-scenes has power delightfully of unreal world wholly obedient to the whims of the imagination.22 The aspects of mise-en-scene are setting, costume and make up, and Lighting.23

Setting is one of important aspect of film and theater. The filmmaker may control setting

in many ways.24 It is used to select an already existing locale in which to stage the action. In movie, some directors have emphasized historical authenticity to improve the story, however,

that realism in settings is largely a matter of viewing conventions. The setting of Film is not

taken from black and white, but taken from colors and it can be an important component of

setting.

Costume has the same function as setting. Costume has specific functions in the total

film, and the range of possibilities is huge.25 Costume may furnish props for the film’s ongoing narrative system,26 and it closely coordinates with setting. Costume and make up are used in film to perfect the shoot, where Make up was originally necessary to the present,27 it has been used in various ways to enhance the appearance of actor on the screen. The last is lighting, it shapes

objects by creating highlights and shadows.28 Much of the impact of an image comes from its manipulation of light. In cinema, lighting is more than; just illumination that makes us easier to

20

(20)

see the action. Lighter and darker areas within the scenes help in creating the overall composition

of each shot and guide us to certain objects and action.

D. Masculine Color

Setting, Lighting, Costume and Make-up use colors to give the different effect to the film.

Color is a complex neurophysiological process of a sensation experienced by human and some

animal,29 it is accurate scientific measurements based on the wavelengths of three primary colors, black, blue, green, and gray. Those colors preferred to men than women.30

The colors give many effects to men, such as black, it is men color, black may also reflect

social and cultural value which is different from women where they wear the brighter and more

varied colors, while men costume is lack of various color.31 Blue are calming, authority figures,

intelligence, and stability.32 Green is cool, restful, and signifies growth, renewal, health, and

environment as well as balance and stability.33

Other colors are yellow and gray, according to Dorcus research (1926), he found that

yellow had a higher affective value for the men.34 The last is gray, and it is same as black or dark

(charcoal gray) carries some of the strength and mystery of black.35 It is a sophisticated color

B. Data Analysis

The character of Bond in the Casino Royale movie is classic, it compare with the recent

Bond’s movie in 80’s or 90’s. The movie still shows about Bond’s women, Bond’s fight and

Bond’s charm. Bond also completed by his modern tools of secret agent equipment as usual.

In the chapter three, Casino Royale movie is analyzed by using the representation of

constructional approach and the masculinity concept of Janet Saltzman Chafet. Analysis divided

into seven areas based on the Janet’s masculinity concept. The first is Physic, it discusses of men

performance whether men body and power such as virile, athletic, strong, brave and according to

Janet’s concept, men said masculine if they are mess appearance and aging. The second is

(27)

his necessity. Third is Sexual, it discusses of men sexually aggressive and their experience

relationship of women. The fourth is Emotion, it discusses of men way of hide or control their

emotion. The fifth is Intellectual, it discusses of men brain such as logical thinking, intelligence,

objective and practice. The sixth is Personality, it discusses of men authority and responsibility

which include leading, dominating, discipline, independent, and individual. The last is Other

Personal Character, it discusses of strong characteristic of their ambition and effort in getting

something, it includes of success-orientation, ambitious, proud, egoist, moral, trustworthy,

decisive, competitive and adventure.

Both the theory and the concept, the writer is going to analyze the masculinity

representation of Bond in the Casino Royale movie from the scenes and characters dialogues.

a. Physic

Physic means body, which is important of human performance. It is also related with

health and sexy body which is appearing proud and confidence. The newest Bond is represented

as blonde and a middle age man, who has a good looking face and strong body. He is a man who

loves sport; it can be seen from his athletic and muscular body(Picture 1-2).

Bond in the Casino Royale is athletic. His athletic physic is shown in his shoulder, arm,

and chest. The way he stands shows a bravery of a man. Bond is represented as a man with short

hair like an army, he does not wear any accessories like earring or necklace. The way he stands

looks sturdy and brawny, even the towel which he holds is dark blue which represent the

stronger tendency of man’s favorite color. It is associated with calm, intelligence, stability, unity,

and conservatism. 39

(28)

The background of the pictures (1-2) is the sea with its wave. The sea is considered as the

world wild and the waveband is a symbol of challenge and difficulty of life which must be faced

in order to survive. It is related with men worlds and masculine things, where the men have

many challenges in their life, the activities at the sea is extraordinary action such as surfing,

diving and swimming. The sea has nature sense which circumstances around him. The sea is

described as Bond’s massive of job. And, the scenes give Bond’s face view calmness as a mature

man, it is supported by his athletic and muscle body which make him not to be a coward and he

can subjugate the sea as if he beats his enemies. His strengthen is one thing that makes him adopt

‘no need of friend’ to face his enemies. He would chase and beat his enemy or something

prevents his mission (Picture 3, 4 &5).

In the movie, Bond is represented as a modern man who concerns of his appearance and

it isn’t suitable with the Janet’s concept, but it becomes the other character that makes him looks

perfect and it is confessed his enemy. ‘Le Chiffre’, one of his enemy said that Bond muscle body

is a part of his good looking.

“You have taken good care of your body.” “Such a waste” (said Le Chiffre)

From the phrase, “taken good care” it explains that Bond has a lot of time and money to

shape his muscled body. But, Le Chiffre thought Bond’s activity is not used. And take good care

means to give a lot of attention to what you’re doing, but he knows that Bond muscled body

became a plus point of his performance as a man.

Bond muscled body is not only as good looking for a man likes Le Chiffre, but also for

women who look at him. Even Bond uses his physic to took sympathize and information from

his enemy. Also his good physic confessed by one of his love match “Vesper” in her dialogue

(29)

“So as charming as you are, Mr. Bond… I will be keeping my eye on our government’s money…and off your perfectly formed arse” (Vesper)

From the dialogue, Bond confessed by people who looks him. Dialogue told that Vesper

feel worried to be losing concentration in job because of Bond enchantment. Beside great

appearances, sometime Bond does not care of his appearance, he work without clothes shows his

masculine body. He enjoy and concenstration of his job without wearing clothes to cover his

body (Picture 6).

b. Function

The movie represents the culture of men function as breadwinner or provider for their

family or themself. As a secret agent gives Bond salary more than enough for his daily necessity

or to pay his taste of luxurious things.

Bond has a high taste of something he has choosen, such as he spend the day in one room

of the One and Only Ocean Club.40 The room looks luxury and wide with facilities, service and best scenery of nature. The room is full of furniture with natural color, such as brown, black,

white and blue. The domination of natural color describes the masculine room, where it is

deemed as masculine color even there is no flower to beautify the room (picture 7). And he is

able to rent a luxurious ship to go to the small island with Vesper (Picture 8). His properties are

not cheap at all, but he never care of its prices.

“Welcome to the Ocean Club, sir. Checking in?” (Receptionist)

“Yes. But it’s a Spur-of-the-moment thing, and I haven’t got a reservation.” (Bond) “Okay. We have an ocean-view villa.” (Receptionist)

“Perfect” (Bond)

The word “perfect” means having everything that is necessary; complete and not damage,

without considering of his choices. The choice represents one of his tastes of something for his

daily performance. And it can be seen from his fashion style.

40

(30)

Bond costume is his tuxedo worn in his daily job, such as when he visited Bahamas he

wore gray tuxedo and black glasses to protect his eyes from the sunshine. It is a simple fashion

but not reducing his enchantment (Picture 9). Bond is full of consideratiom of other choice that

he will wear. And it can be seen when Vesper chooses a tuxedo for him, he refused it but he

received it by smiling when he knows it is suitable with his taste (Picture 10). As in the

dialogues:

“I have a dinner jacket” (Bond)

“There are dinner jackets and dinner jackets. That is the latter. And I need you looking like a man who belongs at the table” (Vesper)

“How… it’s tailored” (Bond)

“I sized you up the moment we met” (Vesper)

The dialogues describe one side of Bond as a man who is used to do anything alone. He

wore the coat that fixed for him and not waste his time to order, even though what he wore is

expensive or exclusive.

A John Lobb shoe is one of the shoes worn by Bond while visiting the Casino, the

comfortable and simple shoes, but luxurious one. A John Lobb shoes is the exclusive brand of

Shoes Company in London. It produces shoes based on shape of customer’s foot and the design

is matched by the customer order.41

c. Sexual Aggressive

Sexual means intimacy or desire relationship. The earlier Bonds represents as man has

sexually aggressive to women, but in the Casino Royale movie Bond distant to the opposite sex

and his views on women are strong and chauvinistic. Bond is not sexually aggressive but he is

clever in speech, attitudes, and his performances treat toward woman.

41

(31)

Bond knows how to get sympathy of woman. Bond has romantic sense such as his speech

and his treatment making woman feel honor (Picture 11-12).

“No wonder he was in such a foul mood. My mistake” (Solange) “Can I give you a lift home?” (Bond)

“That would really send him over the edge. I’m afraid I’m not that cruel” (Salome) “Well, perhaps you’re just out of practice” (Bond)

“Perhaps” (Solange)

“Well, what a bout a drink at my place?” (Bond) “Your place? Is it close?” (Solange)

“Very.” (Bond) “One drink” (Solangee)

“Welcome to my home.” (Bond)

The dialogue represents the feeling of guilty of Solange, because she feels that her

husband lose is her mistake. Bond seduces Dimitrios wife, but only to get information, and when

circumstance arise that require him to leave, he leaves immediately. He does not abandon the

responsibilities of his job for the sake of comfort or pleasure. The other his relationship with

Solange is different from Vesper. Bond makes Vesper feel better from her trauma after the fight

where Bond kills two people (Le Chiffre colleagues or investors) by placing Vesper fingers into

his mouth. She sits under shower to wet her body and felt cold, because water is one of the world

elements which give a positive effect to human and animal in the world (Picture 13).

Sexual is related with men status. Bond is represented as man who dislikes serious

relationship with women. It is because he dislikes a single woman and having relationship with

married women will make the relation is easier.

(1) "You like married women, don't you, James?" (Salome) "It keeps thing simple" (Bond)

(2) “…but my family is strict Roman Catholic, so for appearances’ sake, it’ll be a two-bed-room suite. (Vesper)

(32)

“No don’t worry. You are not my type” (Bond) “Smart?” (Vesper)

“Single” (Bond)

From the conversation above, the writer takes opinion that Bond is like a single status

without boundaries of marriage, (as we discuss above). He uses his relationship with women

only for getting the information, so that his intimacy does not sweep off feet. He has an instinct

to judge a woman whether she is single or not, such as in the midst of movie, he decides to live

together with Vesper and resign from his job.

d. Emotion

Emotion is a strong feeling of any kinds of love, joy, hate, fear, and jealousy. Emotional

means showing a feeling of angry or emotion, belong to Janet’s concept, men can stabilities their

emotion when they face the problem. Casino Royale represents the character of Bond who has an

emotion to the opposite sex. The newest Bond is a person who trusts toward the woman he loves.

He brings his feeling in his mission, it is proved when Bond has to enter the password named

“VESPER” in a banking password of gambling, and he trusts her (Picture 14-15). The name does

not only exist in her password but also in hearth. Bond feels in love with her, he tells his feeling

to Vesper that he loves her and wants to be live together with her, even he plan to quit from his

job as a secret agent and looking for the other job (picture 16).

“Yes. Everyone except you. I wonder if that’s why I love you.” (Bond) “You love me ?” (Vesper)

“Enough to quit and float round the world with you…until one of us has to find an honest job. But I think that’s gonna have to be you. I’ve no idea what an honest job is.” (Bond)

“You are serious.” (Vesper)

(33)

The dialogues express Bond’s feeling, it is different from the earlier Bond, who has not

an emotional relationship. But, when he wants to be serious in love with Vesper to live together

with him and decided to end his adventure. He knows that Vesper lies or exploits him, even

though he knows that he is being exploited but he tries to help vesper until she died (Picture

17-18). Men are human being, who feel a kind of emotion and they are clever in hiding their

emotion. When he knows that vesper has gone, Bond’s impression drops just seconds after

Vesper pass away.

Bond’s expression is very deep when embraces Vesper’s body. It represents that Bond is

a patient man, the pictures (18-19) above really shows his admirable of self-control emotion. He

accepts the death of his beloved woman and shows nothing but sadness along with his perfect

emotion control towards the dead of Vesper. He faced the death of his beloved woman.

The movie represents Bond’s feeling in the setting scenes by the action of the broken

glasses picture as men’s heart that broken because of his beloved girl betrayal. The plans and

hopes to live with her become painful of his love experiences, it is represented by the broken

home which is rebuilt and the broken is caused by a mistake of water rippled (Picture 19). But

men are clever persons who stand in pain and hold the pain patiently. Men are human who are

clever to change the sorrow becomes a strong soul to maintain their live. Like the text of Bond

spoken in dialogue:

“… if you do need time…” (‘M’)

“Why should I need more time? The job’ and the bitch is dead."

The word 'bitch' represents of his hate and channels his hurt feeling. The "bitch" means a

female dog or unpleasant woman, behind the meaning of bitch is crude but his expression is only

(34)

e. Intellectual

Intellectual is connected with a person’s powers of reasoning. Belong to Janet’s concept;

intellectual includes rational, objective, and practice. As a secret agent, Bond has to be intellect

and take care himself of any reason to kill somebody. Movie represents Bond’s intellectual skill

practically in side of gambling card. Bond has a lucky fate in gambling and it brings him to be

the winner in every games. Bond wins “Aston” (Dimitrios car), when he wants to close his

enemy ‘Dimitrios’ and playing card with him (Picture 20). He uses the car to close with

Dimitrios wife to get information about Ellipsis and the world terrorist donator. Bond looks calm

in the game; it is different when he faces Le Chiffre in Casinos, Bond looks emotional and brings

him lost at first. But in the last game he gets a donation from Felix and wins the game (Picture

21-22). The picture is taken by focus both Bond and Le Chiffre. Both of them wear black and

white clothes; it also represents as badness and goodness in the real or men world. White clothes

worn by Bond represent goodness. The black one worn by Le Chiffre represents badness. It is

same as anything in the world have two sides, where both give equal influence to the world,

because if the world haven’t the badness it would be crippled, there is no equality for both of

them.

It is not only bad and good role in their world but also the destiny or luck is related in

gambling. Gambling is a game based on luckiness and it has a trick called ‘bluffing’, and it

describes in dialogue below:

“So you telling me it’s a matter of probability and odds. I was worried there was some chance involved” (Vesper)

“Well, only if you assume the player with the best hand wins” (Bond) “So that would be what you call “bluffing”? (Vesper)

As the usual game, gambling has a trick or rule in playing. Bluffing is one of the tricks

(35)

rival to answer his call by a high bet, such as in the picture (21), there is a text “Raise. All in” the

text is said by Bond when he answers Le Chiffre call and he bet all of his money.

Before he wins, he is being poisoned and almost died. As a secret agent, practically he

can care himself in any condition. When he realizes that he is poisoned, practically he takes salt

and water to neutralize the poison and go to his car to get medicine helping from the secret agent

service (Picture 23).

f. Personality

Personality means the characteristic and qualities of a person which can be seen as a

whole. And Interpersonal means existing or done between two people, where one of them can be

leader and dominant. To Janet’s concept, the interpersonal is a leader, dominant, discipline,

independent, individual and those characteristic exist in Bond’s character. Bond is represented as

a leader who has dominant of his job and relationship. He arranges the things which involve him.

As in his first mission in Montenegro, he rearranges the strategy based on his thought, while the

secret service gives the detail of plan mission. Bond becomes Mr. Arlington Beech but he

introduces himself as Bond. Bond is also represented as dominating man in relationship or

sexual. He chooses vesper dress in order to look beautiful in public and help his mission in

Casino (Picture 25).

Beside the men world, gambling is also related with women, where a woman is

represented as one thing of pride in the game. A woman would come near a man and kiss, and

then the other player would see the woman is not their card, like the dialogue below:

“For you.” (Bond)

(36)

“I need you looking fabulous. So when you walk up behind me and kiss me on the neck, the player will be thinking about your neckline and not about their card” (Bond)

“I’ll do my best” (Vesper)

From Bond’s dialogue, it represents man’s nature has a dominant in gender to do his

mission and his wild nature that he must show off or used his girl to take rival’s attention until

they lost concentration of their card. Woman is not only related with Bond in gambling but also

in sexual intimacy (Picture 24).

Beside his dominating area, Bond represents as a discipline secret agent. He does his plan

mission, his planning to minimalist the risk of mission failure and the worst is Bond to be killed.

His discipline is shown in his missions, when looking for information about Ellipsis, he plans it

by looking the enemy’s location from the secret service website and brings him to Bahamas

(Picture 26-28). He breaks trough the security room and ask to the receptionist hotel which

brings him met Dimitrios and defeats the Bomb maker in Miami airport and cause Le Chiffre lost

hundred of thousand dollars. Bond preparation seen such as, when he will kill Dryden in

Dryden’s office. He knows the Dryden’s gun and save it (Picture 29).

Bond is a kind of an independent and individual person. In his personal life and job, he is

a truly individual. Philosophically, a secret agent is a kind of a quite person and individualist

person who can keep the mission alone. It can be said because the secret agents should maintain

his task without leaky information. So, the best way to accomplish the agent’s task is to be

independent and does not share the information to others, in the aim at preventing the leaky

information (Picture 30). The scenes show, how independent and individualist is emitted from

his men’s side which really masculine. He beats his enemies alone.

(37)

Men have strong characteristic trough Janet’s concept it includes of success-orientation,

ambitious’ of proud, egoistical, moral, trustworthy, decisive, competitive and adventurous. The

movie represents the characteristic trough Bond character. Bond as success oriented person who

do his job successfully; he can face the troubles in his job and caring himself. As a secret agent,

Bond is represented constantly as classed man; he is a man who has moral, attitude, and speech.

For instance, when he serves nobly a glass of wine is one moral to respect (Picture 31).

A classed man is shown when Bond is in Casino. Casino is the modern sense of the

world; it is a facility accommodates certain types of gambling activities. Casinos are often

located near or joined with hotels, restaurants, retail shopping, cruise ships and the other vacation

attractions. Some casinos know for hosting live entertainment events, such as concerts and sport

events.42

Casino or gambling card in the Casino Royale movie is represented as a symbol of

prestige and class status of wealth; gambling needs lots of money to play. Casino gambling is

one of ‘high classes’ game because casino gambling is not a cheap game to be played. Bond

really engages his life in sophisticated vehicles, guns, luxurious clothes, and free of charge

high-class holiday. The writer thinks that Bond reflects a high-high-class lifestyle.

Gambling is not only the game but it is men’s world. The world where men show their

natures (ego, proud, challenge, etc), the picture (21) describes that the gambling table as small

world of their fight in the real live and game, the imitation of money describes their classes and

success. Like in the Bond dialogue, explain that:

“true, but this one overcompensates by wearing slightly masculine clothing being more aggressive than her female colleagues which gives her a somewhat prickly demeanor and ironically enough, makes it less likely for her to be accepted and promoted by her male superiors” (Bond)

42

Casino. The Free Encyclopedia. July 6, 2008.

(38)

From the dialogue above tells that gambling is not an ordinary game because we have to

play in the location and wear a high-class dress, such as tuxedo and a dress, which means the

visitor looks as a high class person. The picture (21) shows of somebody else who is watching as

community who confesses or support what they get in their fight.

Bond is a kind of trustworthy man and chosen as representatives in Casino to face against

Le Chiffre. Besides trustworthy, the secret service gives him the best facilities to help on his

mission and saving his life, one of them is watch. It knows that Bond not worn ordinary watch,

and describe in the dialogue below:

“..since M16 looks for maladjusted young men that give little thought to sacrificing others in order to protect Queen and Country. You know former SAS types with easy smiles and expensive watches. Rolex? (Vesper)

“Omega” (Bond) “Beautiful” (Vesper)

The dialogue, describes that Bond, who keep Queen and Country get special things like

watch or expensive watch. Rolex or Omega watch is the expensive watch in their classes. The

Omega is one of the most recognized brands in the world. It gives the best facilities and qualities

which is suitable with Bond’s job as the secret agent and the design suitable with his

performance and characteristic.

The last action represents Bond, who is James Bond. By wearing the black tuxedo he

shows himself strong and brave. The weapon brings up by Bond is a HK UMP-9, a black,

lightweight submachine gun. He uses a UMP with a silencer and a curved magazine.43 The gun is made for used by the British Army,44 while the UMP (Universal Maschinenpistole, German for

43

(39)

"Universal Submachine Gun") is a submachine gun developed and manufactured by Heckler &

Koch45 (Picture 32).

The picture shows the real Bond with his power and masculine side of a sophisticated

man. His vehicles represent his masculinity. Bond’s car in Casino Royale describes the sense of

Bond’s riding, a masculine car with pro race tires, two-seat, dark color and solid body kit

(Picture 33).

The picture shows the class of Bond property, that is parked and looks more luxurious

and fabulous than the other car. His car describes how masculine he is, it is looked from the

design and gray color of the cars body, it is one of a racing car. It is one of limited product with

modern Aston Martin DBS a high performance sports car from the UK manufacturer. It has two

seats coupes and the power of a racing car, V12 engine from the DBR9. Beside the comparison

and power or racing car machine, it facilities are useful items but it is different from the latest

Bond vehicles which is facilitative by metal spikes, oil slicks or even adaptive. Instead of the car

facilities are more practical items, such as a sophisticate/gun and anti-poison/chemical

combi-pens (Picture 34-35), those facilities are given by ‘M’ to protect Bond’s life. Because ‘M’ know

‘that double-0s have a very short life expectancy’ and it is proven these facilities help Bond

when he is poisoned in the last time of the game. It’s also describes how special he is. His

vehicles are his job instrument.

Bond is described as an egoist person; his ego and power are strong. He is egoist,

ambitious, and has many senses. He is not considering any the risk of his done. He has a strong

ambitious to get something.

45

(40)

(1) “Well, I’m gonna need the other 5 million to buy back in” (Bond) “I can’t do that, james” (Vesper)

“Look, I made a mistake. I was impatient, Maybe I was arrogant, but I can beat him” (Bond)

“I’m sorry” (Vesper)

“Sorry? Sorry? Try putting that in a sentence. ‘Sorry Le Chiffre’s gonna win…continue funding terror and killing’. That kind of sorry?” (Bond)

“You lost because of your ego, and that came ego can’t take it. That’s what this is about. All you’re going to do now is lose more” (Vesper)

“Then you’re an idiot” (Bond) “I’m sorry” (Vesper)

"I said, you’re a bloody idiot. Look in my eyes. I can beat this man, you know that" (Bond)

(2) "As soon as I've won this game"(Bond)

The dialogue shows how torture he is when he lost by Le Chiffre, he felt as a loser when

it happen. He is not a kind of person who left the chance; he will struggle what he wants and in

his job responsibility. He asks the money and confessed softly his mistake which is egoist, but as

a new Bond represented as cold, calmness and arrogant, he dislikes if someone is not granted

what he wants. His strength is represented in his dialogue; phrases "you know that" and "as soon

as," describes ambitious, optimism and competitive, who has not badness of his act, but it makes

him become explicit of his heart said (a strong-minded). And he does not consider of his

condition after unconscious of being poisoned (Picture 36). Another person, namely Vesper and

“M”, claims how egoist Bond is and he dislikes if they threat what he must do. He will do what

he thinks that is true or wrong, even it causes bad effect for the other people others or his

country, like in both the text:

(1) “Funny” (vesper)

“Look, if Le Chiffre is that well-connected…he knows who I am and where the money’s from. Which means he’s decided to play me anyway? So he’s either desperate or he’s overly confident but either way that tells me something about him. And all he gets in return is a name he already has” (Bond)

(41)

(2)“Bond, this may be too much for a blunt instrument to understand, but arrogance and self-awareness seldom go hand in hand. I want you to take your ego out of the equation and to judge the situation dispassionately” (‘M’)

The movie represents Bond as a man who loves traveling, the desire of work as a secret

agent is not depend on one place and he is always in formal dress, it describes his traditional

Bond. Behind his gray formal coat and black shoes, his wise, enchantment and his authority can

be looked obviously. He looks formal but simple as usual man, “not bring anything in hand.” His

adventure is stared from Madagascar, Bahamas, Montenegro and the last is the small island with

Vesper. Bond's life become a lot of men's dream because he can travel in the beautiful Islands

(42)

CHAPTER IV

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

The writer first step to analyze the Masculinity in Casino Royale '007 is started on the

assumption of the change of main character "Bond" from the earlier Bond movies, who is usually

represented as a sophisticated, playboy, and fewer of fighting.

This research is to describe the masculinity of the main character “James Bond” who is

represented as a new secret agent of 007 and shifting the masculinity. Bond is represented more

fresh secret agent in his middle age, gentle, blonde, brief, less of sophisticated guns instrument

but he is very skilled in fighting with an empty hand, brave and strong.

Bond's masculinity is seen as same a traditional masculinity concept as Janet’s concept,

there are Physic, Function, Sexual aggressive, Emotion, Intellectual, Personality and Other

Personal Characteristics. In the physic point, Bond is represented as a middle age man,

muscular body, brave in his action and masculine. But, Bond is not appropriates with Janet’s

concept about improper appearance. In the function point, Bond's culture is represented as a

provider even for himself only. His salary as the secret agent is able to fulfill his daily necessity.

Bond is represented as a masculine of his choices, such as color. Bond's taste represents his

manly and luxurious lifestyle. The newest Bond sexually is different from the earlier, he is

described as a man who distant of the opposite sex but he is not gay. In Casino Royale, Bond has

a short relationship with woman only to get the information. From the emotional side, Bond is

(43)

betrayal, it is proven than the earlier one. Bond feels and plans to quit as the secret agent and live

together with his Vesper. As a man, Bond shows his emotional, like he hates Vesper and he can

balance his emotion of angry and sad.

The movie represents Bond's character as usual, such as intellectual, rationale, and

practice in his mission. Bond does his mission in discipline and lack of bad effect that makes him

killed. In the other personal character, Bond is represented as success-oriented man in his job and

life, he is ambitious and well mannered. Bond's characteristic is stronger than earlier, such as

egoist, stubborn and unstoppable even by Vesper, it is shown when he is poisoned and he

continued to play gambling without consider his condition soon after he is unconscious. He does

his work individually when he traveling and beat his enemy. Bond also represents the

masculinity out of the Janet's concept, there are distant of opposite sex, less sophisticated, and

more fight.

In this research, the writer also sees Bond is represented as the earlier Bond in the last

story when Bond shows up his gun. And Bond is represented as well mannered, educated and

classed man who is represented as in the earlier Bond movie.

B. Suggestion

In analyzing the movie, the writer suggests that the other researcher should choose the

suitable issue to analyze, and should know about the science of cinematography that will help in

analyzing the issue of the movie.

The writer also suggests the other readers to jot down the main idea of the research and

(44)

research to avoid obstacle of exploring ideas in the middle of the analysis. In addition, the writer

suggests the reader of this paper who is interested in the Casino Royale '007 to be analyzed, such

APPENDIX

Synopsis of the Casino Royale movie

Casino Royale story about secret agent‘007 and the movie introduces James Bond before
