This study focused on violated maxim by the main character in Guardian of the Galaxy movie. The research was conducted by using qualitative research method. The data were collected from the script of Guardian of the Galaxy Movie. The findings of the thesis showed that there were 32 violating maxim which classified into four types. They were violation maxim of quality (3), violation maxim of quantity(11), violation maxim of manner(12) and violation maxim of relation(6). The most dominant type of maxim that violated in Guardian of the Galaxy Movie is violation maxim of manner with 38%. It mean that most of the utterances deliberately created to make confusing enemy mind. It is the way to reach their purpose. so many ambiguity in their utterances. So the enemy felt hard to get the point.

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. The Background of The Study
Language is a tool of human communication. Through the language,
human connect with the other, so language takes the vital function in our daily life. People know how to make a conversation with the others, but few of them can expound what is necessary to have a conversation going on wheels (Pan,
2012: 21). However, in conversation we often do not speak completely and clearly, so the listener has difficulty to get the meaning of our utterance.
Grice (1975) states, “make your conversational contribution such is required, at the stage it which occurs, by the accepted purpose or direction of the talk exchange in which you are engaged”. Grice also introduce Cooperative
principle to controls of the speaker and listener in conversation. Cooperative principle is the suggested principles for the speaker and the hearer to show their
cooperation by giving appropriate contribution in their conversation. Grice divide the cooperative principle down into four maxim which goes towards making a speaker’s contribution to the conversation.
However, people sometimes cannot fulfill those maxims and they seem to disobey them (Natalie and Tupan, 2010: 63). When a speaker does maxim
violation, the conversation between the speakers and the hearers can be unsuccesscesful since they will misunderstand each other. This misunderstanding
ctually not all people speaks depend on Grice’s cooperative principle. very conversation may contain the purpose of the speakers. These purposes can be good or bad both for the speakers and the hearers. There are many purposes for
people to do violated maxim such as to save their face, cover the truth, and tell a lie.
The researcher becomes interested in violating maxim which studies about how people make their conversation unsuccessfully because the researcher want to know the reason why the characters do violating maxim. It motivated the
researcher to choose analyzing violation maxim in the guardian of the galaxy. y analyzing violation maxim, it helps the audience to know the reason of character
did that in the guardian of the galaxy.
In addition, there are many researches that had been conducted violation maxim. One of them was Tupan and Natalia (2008) who studied about violating
the maxim using Christoffersen’s criteria of lying. The findings revealed that each person has his own reason specifically in lying. Chairunissa (2014) study focus in the process of language humor from the perspective of Grice’s CP. The findings
was distorting implicated meaning happens to serve the primary factors to cause humor.

Guardian of the Galaxy is one of successful film in the bollywood history. ccording to imdb.com Guardian of the Galaxy on the the top in the box office on its launching. Its ranked at the first on its launching on the opening weekends of
ugust. Guardian of the Galaxy also won many awards. This movie also had been nominated in Oscar and Grammy in 2015.
The researcher is interested to conduct the research about violating maxim in action movie entitled Guardian of galaxy because the researcher want to find out the relation between maxim violation and the reason that happened. So, we
could understand it by applying the theory of Grice’s cooperative principle especially violating maxim.
B. Prob e of Study
ased on the explanation above, the researcher had three problems that
would be discussed further through the research, they were:
1. What maxims was violated in the Guardian of the Galaxy movie ?
2. What maxim was dominantly violated in the Guardian of the Galaxy movie?
3. Why the dominant maxim was violated in the Guardian of the Galaxy

In the relation to the problems of study, the objectives of study were:
1. To describe the types of maxim violation in the movie script
2. To describe the dominant type of maxim violation in the movie script 3. To find out the reason violation dominant maxim in the movie script
D. Scopes of The Study
This research focused on the analysis of the violating maxim which is done by the main character in The Guardian of Galaxy movie using Grice’s
theory. The data were taken from main characters utterances.

indings of the study were expected to be useful in theoretically and practically. Theoritically, it was expected to be useful for expand the knowledge
for other students who are attracted in learning Cooperative principle and maxims, especially on analyzing the violating maxim.
Practically, the findings expected to be useful for the students to void and decrease the maxim violation usage when they perform a talk exchange or
conversation, for the teachers as a teaching material and for the other researcher as inspiration to conduct a more in depth research in order to have a better knowledge in understanding the meaning and message contains in a talk

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
A. Conclusions
Based on the analysis of the utterances in The Guardian of Galaxy movie’s
script in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that :
1. There were four types of maxims which violated by the characters in The
Guardian of Galaxy movie i.e. maxim of quality, quantity, relation, and
manner in responding the question or statement given by the other
characters.
2. The maxim which dominantly violated in The Guardian of Galaxy movie’s
script was maxim of manner about 12 utterances (38%).
3. The context of the dominant violation of maxim occur is when the main
character give obscurity information to trick the listener. From the
analysis, it could be concluded that event though Grice (1975) proposes
the Cooperative Principle in communication, in some situations, people
disobeyed them deliberately. When people violated the maxims, they
seemed to have their own reasons for doing it. The writer found out that
the characters in Guardian of the Galaxy movie used the violation of
maxims as strategy to tell lies. The lying reasons varied from one to
another in accordance with the purpose they wanted to reach. The violation
of maxims happened because the character wanted eliminate any chance

for the interlocur to respond so that the interlocur would ask no more
question and the character could achieve their goals easily
B. Suggestions
The writer suggest the readers especially the student of nglish
epartment to choose the violation of maxims as the object of research, because
many interesting aspects which can be analyzed especially in the action movie.
Some people do not know how important and crusial to learn violation of
cooperative principle to achive the successful and ideal communication because
people usually often do it.
Theoritically, it was expected to be useful for expand the knowledge for
other students who are attracted in learning Cooperative principle and maxims,
especially on analyzing the violating maxim.
Practically, the findings expected to be useful for the students to void and
decrease the maxim violation usage when they perform a talk exchange or
conversation, for the teachers as a teaching material and for the other researcher as
inspiration to conduct a more in depth research in order to have a better
knowledge in understanding the meaning and message contains in a talk
