CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This introduction provides an overview of this study of myth faced by Anna Brady as An American Woman Traveler to Ireland in Anan Tucker Film “Leap Year”. This chapter includes the background of study, statement of the problem, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and definition of key term.

1.1Background of the Study

Literature always entertains people by its beauty value and emotional effect. According to Moody (1984; 2), ‘the primary aim of literature is to give pleasure and entertains those who voluntary attend to it’. Besides entertaining, literature is important to human being because it speaks universally and affects them. From reading or watching literary work, it can be compared between real life and fiction.

After consuming this written or spoken material, people accept different emotion based on the literary fill. It is what the author says and how he/she says it so consumers may interpret the author’s message. Because of its anxiety characteristic, sometimes people discuss and analyze it. There are different branches of literature, such as poetry, novel, short story, and drama.

or objects may produce” (Roby & Ulanov. 1962:xi). Therefore, the psychology reaction of the audience is an ultimate end which is designed by drama.

As a part of drama, film is a phenomenon from the reality of all human life. It happens because of the ability of film to reach all aspect whose are social aspect, culture, politic, economy, education, tradition, etc. According to World Book (2007:846) “film (also known as movie and motion picture) is one of the most popular forms of art and entertainment throughout the world”. It is also a major of information. From the information and the message of the film, it causes social critic aspect, education, and science. All of them can be picked by the audience as a study. Besides, film gives the audience the information of an event and environment phenomenon happened in the far place. It is an art product and culture which can introduce a place without visit it. Because of those benefits, the writer of the study decides to take film as the subject of the study. The film to be studied is Anan Tucker film “Leap Year”.

”Leap Year” tells about Anna Brady, an American woman, who plans to travel to Dublin, Ireland. McIntosh & Goeldneer (1990; 10) states that ‘travel is the action and activities of people taking trips to a place or places outside of their home communities for any purpose except daily commuting to and from work’. The statement means that travel is different with moving which is stay in a long time in a new place and travel is temporary and not a continually journey. Travel has a synonymous with “tourism” and a person who does a travel called traveler.

important thing than self refreshing from travel is the learning of new social, tradition, culture, and characteristic whose were never known before. One of the unique traditions is the belief of myth which has no basic of science to be received in this modern era. On the contrary, myth is famous in some places and can become an eternal tradition.

Magoulick, in www.hercules.gcsu.edu, states that ‘myths are defined as tales believed as true, usually sacred, set in the distant past or other worlds or parts of the world, and with extra-human, inhuman, or heroic characters.’ Myths explain all kinds of natural phenomena, usually incorrectly and not has scientific basic. A long ago, myths were influencing the attitude of people. They used myths as the rules of life.

The unique thing from myth is how myth still growth in this modern era. Accepting myth in daily life is very contrast with the people progressive thought today. Thus the writer is interested to analyze how American woman with her faced unrealistic myths as her guide while traveling in new place. Meanwhile, the myths in show in this study are included as Ireland myths.
