CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
As the introduction of the study, this chapter will presents about the aspects dealing the introduction. The aspects are background of the study, research problems, research objectives, significance of the research, scope and limitation, and definition of key terms.
1.1Background of the Study
Most everyone knows a language because we live in a world of language. Language is the source of human life and power. One of language product is literature. According to Fromkin, Rodman, and Hyams (91: 2003) literature is prototypically written language, but writers often create special effects by writing in ways which borrow characteristics associated with speech. Broadly speaking, literature is used to describe anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to works of the creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction (Lombardi, 2012).
2 with books. Definitely, people can discover meaning in literature by looking at what the author says and the way the author says it. By reading the literature, people can also interpret the author's message. Literature is important to everyone because it affects the people’s life.
Drama is one of the literary works which is most like naturally technology. A film is like the mirror of the real world aspects.
“The Holiday” is a tale of two women, two houses, and two love interests (Dargis, 2006). The actress and actors in this film do not just fall in love but they do their own way to fall out of love. It is a sweet romantic comedy featuring pretty people, pretty houses, and pretty decent acting (Murray, 2006). “The Holiday” looks interesting to watch because in its story, the main character is exchanging her luxurious home with someone that she never meets who lives at small village in England. Both of them are trying to escape from their broken hearts and heading into the holiday season in another country. In this film, the audiences can enjoy the beautiful scenery, get new experience about the other countries, and also see the cultural barrier faced by main character. For those who are broken heart because of horrible relationship, “The Holiday” can give some ideas how to get away from the

England, as the destination country is one of the few remaining countries in which royalty is respected. England has magnificence and the English countryside is utterly charming. Amanda has high self-confidence and lack of emotion feelings expression. An American like her tends to think of the ultimate goals of good life as matters of personal choice. It is so interesting to analyze this film because a lot of lessons and cultures that the people can learn. It also contains of many aspects of life such as friendship, love, life style, and idealism. Besides, research about the purpose of holiday to another country especially to escape from broken heart is rarely done. This analysis is expected to give other perspectives about literature itself.
