In this following proposal, we seek to explore the common career path and job functions of a typical strategy consultant. Through six sections we will first identify the questions we strive to delineate, and secondly we will provide a general path to how these questions will be addressed.

The first section involves a typical description of a strategy consultant’s work and the general consulting business. Questions are as follows:

1. What is the work like and what skills are needed in strategy consulting?

2. What are the differences between internal strategy consulting and external consulting? 3. How do strategy consultant competencies change facing the booming technology?

The second section explores the location, structure, and culture of the typical consulting businesses:

1. Where can strategy consultant be found?

2. What are the differences between “Boutique” and “One Stop Shop” strategy consulting firms?

3. How to explain the rise of Big Four in the strategy consulting market?

4. What kind of structure do the strategy-consulting firms have? 5. What kind of culture do the strategy-consulting firms have?

The third section explains the essential skills and characteristics a typical strategy consultant must possess:

1. what kind of work experience do people typically have before they get into this occupation? 2. what kind of education/training is needed?

3. what are the technical/soft skills people need to acquire for this job?

4. what characteristics will make people stand out when applying for this job? 5. what socialization processes are involved?

The fourth section illustrates the prospects of the individuals in the business:

1. For people who stay in this occupation for their entire careers, what is the typical series of steps they follow as they become more senior? (Career Path)

2. For people who leave this occupation in the half way, why are they leaving and where do they go? (listed by each stage of career path)

3. What are the take-aways (outputs) to assistant them for getting a new job (new career path)?

While the fourth section explain prospects on an individual level, the fifth section focuses on the

industry as a whole:

1. How might the consultant business change in the future

2. How should strategy consultants respond to these future changes for consultant businesses 3. What are the opportunities and limitations for consultant organizations in the future
