Abstract

Sago (Metroxylon sago Rottb.) waste up till now had not been exploited in optimal and only partly small are applied as component of feed, especially for ruminant. The potential of sago as animal feed is quite large and will increase in value when processed into wafer complete ration. This experiment was conducted to study chemical and physical quality of sago waste based wafer complete ration which were preserved in various different periods. Determination of chemical and physical variables of wafer complete ration were color, texture, smell, water content, specific density, water activity, and storage capacity. Data were analyzed by analysis to completely randomized factorial design with two factors (A: the levels of sago waste used in wafer complete ration 10.20, 30, and 40%, B: storage time of 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks). The results indicated that the wafer complete ration with various different formulations did not affect specific density and water activity. A significant different (P<0.05) was observed in water content with the highest water value in ration containing 40% sago waste. The period of preservation effect was significant (P<0.05) on water content, density and specific density, but did not influence water activity texture and smell. The preserved wafer complete ration for six weeks were still in good condition, but after eight weeks the wafer started to change in physical texture. It is concluded that sago waste based wafer complete ration has high quality in terms of physical and has storage capacity to keep in good condition for six weeks.

physcally formed to a compact and concse whch s expected to ease n handlng and transportaton, has complete nutrtonal content, and use relatvely smple technology so easy to apply (Trsyulant et al., 2003). Wafer complete raton s feed processng technology, especally n the dry season. Basc research and applcatons, n partcular regardng the potental of mprovng the qualty of sago waste as feed, t untl now stll not wdely appled. Therefore, studes on the utlzaton of sago waste are contnuously stll very necessary. Most research has so far drected sago waste n the utlzaton of sago waste as raw materal for bofuels and fung or bactera growth substrate for the producton of extracellular enzymes (Akmar & Kennedy, 2001). However, the use of nformaton sago waste as raw materal for the manufacture of a complete wafer as a lvestock feed raton s stll very lmted.

Observng ths, a study needs to be done on the potental of sago waste as raw materal for the manufacture of a complete wafer; ths s an effort to raton the supply and mplementaton of strateges that feed technologcal nnovaton-orented economy that s capable of provdng complementary feed at any tme. Ths study ams to determne the qualty and physcal propertes of wafer-based complete ratons of sago waste resdue made up of dfferent formulaton and dfferent storage tme.

Materals and Methods

Experimental equipment

Equpment used n ths study were felt wafer hdrolc machne (temperature of

150 oC, pressure 200-300 kg/cm2 for 15-20 mnutes), machne mxer, hammer mll,

mxng contaner, AW meter, and termohgrometer.

Complete rations formulation

Complete raton used n ths study were concentrates contanng raw materals, such as coconut cake, rce bran, sago, molasses, vtamns, mnerals and sago waste. Raton treatments conssted of : P1= raton contanng 10% sago waste, P2= raton contanng 40% sago waste, P3= raton contanng 30% sago waste, P4= raton contanng 40% sago waste. Complete raton wafer formulatons were prepared usng the method of tral and error. Raton of a complete wafer composton was shown n Table 1.

raton was ncorporated nto rectangular molds measurng 25 cm x 25 cm x 5 cm.

After hot compresson was performed at a temperature of 150 oC wth a pressure wth a pressure

of 200-300 kg/cmkg/cm2 for 15-20 mnutes, coolng was done by placng sheets of wafer

n the open ar for 24 hours untl the mosture content and the weght was constant, then the results were put n sacks.

Wafer tester

Wafer testng are: (a) wafer that has been made to cut the sze of 5 cm x 5 cm x 2 cm samples were then taken for the proxmate analyss (dry materal, ash, crude proten, crude fber, crude fat, Beta-N, and TDN), testng the physcal propertesBeta-N, and TDN), testng the physcal propertes, and TDN), testng the physcal propertes (water content, densty and water actvty). The wafer was then stored for 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Treated wafer that would be stored, was placed n a sackt to determne the dfference.

Statistical analysis

The data obtaned from the results of the study were analyzed usng completely randomzed factoral desgn wth two factors (A: raton, B: storage tme) wth 3 replcatons; f sgnfcantly dfferent occurred, the data wll be tested further wth Orthogonal Contrast Test (Steel and Torre, 1995).(Steel and Torre, 1995).

Storage tme of wafer complete ratons affected sgnfcantly (P<0.05) water content. Average value of the hghest water levels n storage was for 2 weeks, because the wafers absorb water from the envronment. Average value for sx weeks was not stable, ths was caused by humdty and temperature values that changed frequently. The nteracton between factor A (wafer complete raton) and factor B (storage tme) were not sgnfcantly dfferent to water content although P2 treatment had the hghest water content whch was equal to 15.80±0.61. Storage condtons were lkely to ncrease the water content. Ths occurred due to the nfluence of humdty, and ambent temperature durng the storage perods. The actvty of mcroorgansms can be on tap on the water content of 8-12%, so that the feed materal was not easy to mold and rot (Verma et al.1996).

Wafer density

Densty of the wafer determned the dmensonal stablty and physcal appearance of a complete wafer feed (Jayusmar et al., 2002). Wafer densty was a measure of the cohesveness of the sheet and the partcle sze depended on the densty of materals used and the amount of pressure exerted durng the four sheets of wafer manufacturng process. Wafers that have a hgh densty of the feed would provde a sold and hard texture; so t would be easly n both the storage and handlng of shocks durng transportaton and was expected to last longer n storage (Trsyulant et al., 2003). Raton of a complete wafer densty value was ndcated n Table 5.

sgnfcantly affect the densty of the wafer feed. The lowest densty value obtaned

was n treatment P3 whch was 0.45±0.04g/cm3, whle the hghest 0.78±0.04g/

cm3. Densty values were not stable due to hgh relatve humdty caused the lqud

condensed on the surface of the materal; so that the surface materal became wet, and was very conducve to mcrobal growth and damage.

Water activities

Wafers wth a varety of dfferent composton of sago waste dd not sgnfcantly affect the actvty of water (Table 6). Storage tme dd not sgnfcantly affect the actvty of water. Water actvty at the begnnng of week 2 to 8 was stll hgh. Water actvty was the amount of free water used for growng mcroorgansms (Syaref and Hald, 1993). Storage up to 4 weeks dd not change the color to black. The nteracton between factor A and factor B showed no sgnfcantly dfferent results. The lowest water actvty obtaned at P1 was equal to 0.60±0.05. Ths was because the humdty was low, the lqud surface of the materal would evaporate a lot; so that mcrobal growth was hampered by dehydraton and a dark surface materal.

Concluson

Wafer complete ratons wth dfferent composton of sago waste does not affect the specfc gravty, densty of water actvty, but affected water levels wth the hghest value found n the wafer wth a composton of 40% sago waste. Storage for 8 weeks old greatly ncreases the water content, lower specfc gravty and densty, but does not affect the actvty of water. The wafers stored up to 6 weeks s stll n a good condton, but at 8 weeks of storage, the surface of the wafer start to rancd black.
