CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents topics such as: background of the study, statement of problems, purpose of the study, scope and limitation, significance of the study and definition of the key terms. Each section is presented as follows.
1.1 Background of the study
According to Spolsky ( 1998:3 ) “ Sociolinguistics is the field that studies the relation between language and society, between the uses of language and the social structures in which the users of language live”. In other words in sociolinguistics, we study language and society in order to find out as much as we can about what kind of
thing language is. Based on Spolsky’s argument, it seems that language exists in
context, dependent on the speaker who is using it and dependent on where it is being used and why. Speakers mark their personal history and identity in their speech as well as their socio cultural, economic and geographical coordinates in time and space.
In our daily life, sociolinguistics is closer to us. We live in a social group that uses language to make interaction with other. Members of society use language to communicate. There are many social groups that use their own language to send a massage with their members. The variety of language occurs in society due to several factors such as different social statue, different profession, age and gender.

and jargon. In this study, the writer intended to discuss one of those language variations, that is register.
According to Wardough (1986: 48) “Registers are vocabulary that used by
social groups. It is set based on each group. It seems like different groups have different vocabulary. Surgeon, airline pilots, bank manager, sales clerks and jazz fans
are examples of social groups which are used it”. Usually groups in society use
register to have their own specific language. Therefore, they can give a person a sense of belonging to a specific group. In other words, some groups use register in order to show their identity.
In social term, register has advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of register are to build easier conversation between members of group and exclude nonmember to enter the conversation and it can be used to show their identity as a member group. In the other side, using register can get disadvantage that it can make a new member of group confused with the conversation.
In the phenomenon, there are many automotive motorcycling groups who use
register in their communication. Then register is also found in “Oto Trend”
Magazine. Sometimes, register makes some readers difficult to understand about what writers mean. So, the reader cannot accept the message correctly. It will be dangerous because they will keep the mistakes continuously.
There are some studies related to register. The first was conducted by Syukriati (2008). In her study, she used a descriptive qualitative research design. She found 72
registers and 9 groups of register in Cinematography “ Kine Club” Community of

angle, Camera Movement, Technique of camera movement, Focusing technique, Lighting style and Lighting function. The second was conducted by Chodilah (2010). She found 28 registers used by PKS (Partai Keadilan Sejahtera) Politician Community of Batu. She also found two kinds of registers, there were 20 formal registers and 8 informal registers.
Based on the description above, the writer is interested in investigating register
and word formation process used by “Oto Trend“ Magazine on 601 edition 2012.
Although, this magazine uses many words which cause less understanding of the readers, they are interesting to read, because of the update news of the magazine that tells them about the new mode and new modification of motorcycle technique.
1.2 Statement of the Problems
Based on the background of the study above, the writer formulates the problems as follows:
1. What are the registers used by “Oto Trend “Magazine on 601 edition 2012?
2. What are the word formation processes of register used by “Oto Trend “Magazine on 601 edition 2012?
1.3 Purpose of the Study
Based on the statement of the problems above, the purposes of this study are to provide adequate answers to the questions, they are:

1.4 Scope and Limitation of the Study
The writer realizes that it is necessary to limit the scope of this research. The writer takes the scope of this research only focusing on the registers used by the Oto
Trend“ Magazine that are presented in the form of words. Furthermore, the writer
limits the study about the registers used by “Oto Trend“ Magazine on 601 edition.
1.5 Significance of the Study
The result of this study has both theoretical and practical value. Theoretically, the writer expects that the result of this study can give contribution. Reader can
understand exactly about register and word formation processes used by “Oto Trend“
Magazine. Practically, this study can be useful for students who study about linguistic analysis, especially on the register. It may also be able to help further researchers who want to develop and continue another analysis about the same related topic of this study.
1.6 Definition of Key terms

1. Analysis is careful examination of something in order to understand it better (Longman, 2007:52).
2. Registers are sets of vocabulary items associated with discreet occupational or social groups. Surgeon, airline pilots, bank managers, sales clerks and jazz fans use different vocabularies (Wardough, 1986: 48).
