Take a nature walk and observe nature’s patterns, shapes & numbers all around.

Dandelion seed head

One

Ancient Greeks, who made major contributions to geometry, assigned

the color red to the number one. Pictured above is a dandelion seed head with “one” red circle around it representing one.

Fir tree needles

Two

Greeks assigned the color orange to the number two. Two orange circles are illustrated in the image of the fir tree needles as the starting and end points of a straight line.

Trillium

Greeks counted three, not one, as the first odd number.The number three is represented by a triangle because of the three angles and is the color yellow.

Violet

Greeks thought of four as the color green and as a shape with four sides and four corners - a square. People of long ago thought Earth was flat, and they spoke of the "four corners" of the earth.

Ancient Greeks thought of number five as having the shape of a

pentagon. Think of the number five as five dots that you can arrange in a flat shape that has five sides and five corners, or angles.
