A b s tr a c t

This stu dy analyzes determ inants o f p a ssin g the Indonesia CPA exam, w hether there is any pa ttern ofp a ssin g the exam, a n d the validity a n d reliability o f tests. The analysis show s that sex (gender) a n d accounting education system s do not determ ine the o d d o fp a ssin g the CPA exam, how ever the probability to p a ss the exam is higher f o r yo u n g er test-takers a n d those w orking in p ublic accounting firm s. We also obtain the evidence o f a significant pa ttern o f p a ssin g the exam. The probability o f exam takers p a ssin g in the fir s t sittin g o f each subject apparently approxim ates the probability o f test-takers p a ssin g the CPA exam. There is a dim inishing pro bability o f p a ssin g the exam as exam takers repeat. R esult indicates a consistent order o f p a ssin g rate show n by each subject. Audit, Fina ncial M anagem ent-M anagem ent Accounting, a n d Accountin g Inform ation System are the subjects w hich share consistent highest p a ssin g rates, fo llo w e d by Fina ncial A ccou nting a n d Tax-Law, w hich show the lowest p a ssin g rate. Except f o r Fina ncial M anagem ent-M anagem ent Accounting, the sa m p led test items do not m eet the m inim um scores o f validity a n d reliability. We suggest that fu tu re research include a qualitative analysis on test items a n d that p re-test is co nducte d before test items are in cluded in the data bank.
