Black cumin seeds (Nigella sativa) are an indigenous plant which is used empirically to treat range of hepatic and digestive disorders. The Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella flexneri are etiology of digestive disorders such as food poisoning and dysenteric diarrhea. Phytochemical evaluation of the seed shows that its volatile oil contains thymoquinone which has an antibacterial effect.
The objective of this research is to determine the antibacterial effect of black cumin seed infusion againstStaphylococcus aureus and Shigella flexneri. This study is a experimental study. Infusion method is used in the experiment because it is an easiest procedure, where everyone will able to do by themselves.
Result of the research showed there is no diameter of inhibition zone of 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of black cumin seed infusion.
In conclusion, after the microbial experiment was done the infusion of black cumin seed is not proven has antibacterial effect againstStaphylococcus aureus and Shigella flexneriin vitro.
