ABSTRACT
Since code switching occurs in various social aspects, it also occurs in a religious service. The pastor of Salatiga Baptist Church switches codes in delivering a sermon. This paper aims to indicate and elaborate the reasons and social functions that influence a pastor to do code switching in delivering a sermon. The social functions are classified into (1) acceptance in a social group, (2) to show prestige, (3) to show his/her roles, (4) to accommodate the hearer. The data was collected from the pastor’s sermon and analyzed using qualitative descriptive method. The sermon was transcribed stimulated recall interview was employed soon after the immediate transcription. The finding of this research shows that the social functions affect the speaker in doing code switching in delivering sermon. A pastor accommodates his hearers by flexibility of his knowledge in using languages. Then, a pastor also wants to show solidarity and build a closer relationship to the audiences by switching codes. A pastor also shows the prestige by mastering some languages to support him in delivering the sermon. The code switching is also used to emphasize his role as a preacher.
