ABSTRACT
The title of this study is “Figurative Language in Song Lyric Tears and
Rain by James Blunt”. The aims of this study are identifying the types of
figurative language used in the song lyric „Tears and Rain‟ by James Blunt and
analyzing the types of meaning found in the song lyric. The applied method in
collecting the data of this study are documentation and observation method. The
method applied in analyzing the data is qualitative method. The data was taken
from James Blunt‟s song entitled “Tears and Rain”from album Back to Beldam
(2004). The main theory applied in this study is theory of figurative language by
Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963). The analysis is also supported by semantic
theory by Leech (1994). The results show that there are four types of figurative
language found in the song lyric. Those types of figurative language are
hyperbole, metonymy, irony, and simile. There are three kinds of meaning found
in the data they are: connotative meaning, conceptual meaning, and collocative
meaning. The song uses figurative language and types of meaning to beautify and
to convey the implicit message of the song.
