Teachers’ Beliefs on Teaching English in Elementary School

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the teachers beliefs’ on teaching English in elementary

school. The research participants were 10 elementary school English teachers in Salatiga. The data were collected using a semi-structured interview which allowed the participants to share their thought and experiences in English teaching and learning for young learners. The results of this study reveals that the teachers believed English is important nowadays. They did not agree about an issue of ommitting English in elementary school. Thus, they believed that English should be learned as soon as possible. The teachers believed that they should consider the characteristics of young learners in teaching learning English and their psychological factors. Thus, most teachers believed that teaching and learning of English should be fun. They used some techniques to make the teaching learning fun, for example by using pictures, videos, songs, etc. They also used teaching procedures in their teaching.
