Developing English course book for the vocational students of Hospitality Department is very crucial and urgent to do because there is no course book specially designed to meet the students’ needs and the existing book being used has not yet fulfilled the requirements in terms of their special programs or workplace. As a consequence, the instructions using existing course book needs modifying and adapting based on the field or department . That is why Hospitality Department needs a course book with a specific goal to enable the students to understand English written texts and to speak related to their fields of study that is known as English for Specific Purpose (ESP). The lack of a suitable course book is the significant reason for the writers conducted this study to design genre-based course book that meets the needs of the students.
The problem of this study is “What is the quality of the existing coursebook used in teaching and learning and how is the genre-based course book for hospitality department designed ”. This study uses research and development with the procedure of language program development. The research was done in the Hospitality department of SMK Sahid Surakarta in which the participation of the students, the school’s curriculum buerau, and the English teachers were involved. The research used questionnaire and interview as the instrument to collect the data
In this study the course book is developed using the educational research and development (R and D) following two stages: (1) Exploration stage consists of reviewing literature, observing field study and doing nedd analysis, (2) Development stage consists of developing prototype, validating with experts, and trying out the product.
The product of this study is the genre-based course book for hospitality department with integrated skills, syllabus and course grid as the models for lesson plan. The course book consists of standard competence, topics, basic competence (core material), general aims or indicators, teaching and learning activities, methods and media, assessment, the allotted time and sources of the materials. The role and design of instructional materials are a key to help teacher and studnts being bale to use language in specific context. The proposed course book consists of 2 units and each unit has a topic which is developed to 19 activities. The teaching activitis included in the course book are starting point, modelling, joint construction, and independent construction. Such features are added as vocabulary notes, grammar point, useful ekspression, and for your information to support the fouth stages of activities.
