PARISH OFFICE CLOSED

Monday, Feb. 18th Please note that our Parish Offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday, February 18th, in observance of Presidents’ Day.

From Fr. Mike's Desk -

This weekend in the gospel we are given Luke's account of the Beatitudes. Most people are probably familiar with Mat- thew's account of the Beatitudes, but whichever one we find ourselves drawn to, it is important to remember that they serve as a blueprint for who we are supposed to be as Christians. It is important that we always put our best foot forward, remain humble, and remain faithful to our call to be disciples of Christ. There will be times where we will be called to take on mo- ments of adversity, but remember God journeys with us, and if we remain faithful, our reward will be great.

This Tuesday, February 19, there will be a seminar for Pre-Planning Funerals. Carol Mullins and I will be doing a one hour seminar on the importance of Pre-Planning Funerals. We will primarily be focused upon the liturgy itself, and will answer questions you might have when it comes to having a Mass of Christian Burial. We will also touch upon crema- tion and donating one's body to science. There will be two sessions, one at 9:30am and one at 7:00pm; both will be held in the Community Room.

With the crazy winter weather we had at the start of this month and at the end of January, we had to postpone our Open House for Southtowns Catholic School. Southtowns Catholic will have an open house on Wednesday, February 27, 6:00pm-8:00pm. Our school is open to any child, any age, any religious affiliation, from PreK 3- Grade 8.

Finally, earlier this month we had our Nine & Dine Event. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped organize the event. Special thank you to those who participated and to the sponsors for the event. It is always an enjoyable evening and a great event that focuses on community, fellowship and just getting out on a winter's night!

Fr. Sean will continue his move this week and, beginning next Monday the 25th, he will be with us full-time! Please pray for him, and the community in southern Allegany County, as we all enter into a period of transition.

In Good Faith, Fr. Mike

Please Note – If the Mass Intention is for your loved one, or requested by you or your family, and you would like to present the gifts, please see an Usher before Mass.

MASS SCHEDULING

Mass intentions are $15 and are a great way to remember our loved ones in prayer at Mass, but also to celebrate memorable events. While Mass intentions are traditionally for remem- bering those who have gone before us, you can also get Mass intentions for an anniver- sary, birthday, for the intention of those gradu- ating, for All Souls in Purgatory, for someone who is dealing with certain struggles in their life. To schedule a Mass, stop by the Parish Office or call us at 627-2910.

PALM COLLECTION

From now until March 3, feel free to bring in your old palms for burning on Tuesday, March 5, the night before Ash Wednes- day. There will be baskets at the entrances of the church for the collection of the palms.

PARISH PEOPLE AT HOME

Discussion Groups: It’s social! It’s faith-based. Our parish’s unique

‘Parish People At Home’ small discus- sion group program gives you the op- portunity to discuss your Catholic Faith, and get to know other parishion- ers in a casual, friendly environment.

Some of our PPAH groups have been meeting for several years, and have developed life-long friendships! Groups meet bi-weekly 4 times in the fall, 4 times mid-winter, and 4 times in the spring.

Discussion materials are provided.

Our mid-winter season of 4 bi-weekly sessions will begin the week of February 24th. Simply fill out a yellow card in the Gath- ering Space to sign up for a group, or call Carol Mullins in the parish office (627-2910, ext. 3). Would you like to host a group in your home? This is an opportunity to create friendships with oth- ers in our faith community!

DEALING WITH HOME OWNERSHIP

Power your projects by becoming better informed.

Despite economic and environmental benefits to improve your home’s sustainability or energy efficiency, a series of obstacles still prevent robust activity from developing. The greatest obsta- cle of “not knowing” places the average consumer in a very diffi- cult position. Though programs and guidance exist, consumers unfortunately do not have easy access to straightforward and reli- able information that they need before making a decision.

Owning a home is not without its challenges. Our Holy Name Society started a series of discussions that will hopefully help answer questions and provide basic information to help solve some of home ownership's most common problems. Our third presentation will be next Tuesday, February 26, at 7:00pm in the Community Room. All are welcome, women too! The evening will last about one hour and our presenter will

be our very own Bob Piwko, NYS Licensed Home Inspector.

This topic will be:

“Window Pains”

MISSION 2019 MARCH 24—30, 2019

MAKE PLANS TO ATTEND THIS YEAR!

MISSION MASS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Our Parish Mission begins on March 24th. It’s our tradition at St. John Paul II Parish to pray together for the Holy Spirit to flow through our congregation and bless this week-long parish re- treat. We will celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit to pray for the success of our parish Mission at the 9:30 AM Mass on Sun- day, March 10th. All Mission Team are encouraged to attend this Mass to pray together, and to show their support for Mission 2019. Please wear red as a symbol of the presence of the Holy Spirit. WITH ONE VOICE RESPECT LIFE

On Feb. 25, 2001, the following was our bulletin insert: Australi- an infanticide advocate Peter Singer teaches at Princeton U. and he states “killing a disabled infant is not morally equivalent to killing a person.” This does not shock the world. Unrelated: a pro-life nurse holds aborted “Baby Hope” until she dies;

since the intent was to end the child’s life, medical inter- vention was not an option. The culture of death is alive and well as we have heard this past week on both the federal and state levels. Please pray about becoming involved in promoting our Christian culture of life. God knows your limits---and your abilities!

BIBLE STUDY

Our Bible Study on Catholic Topics continues! Do You Want To Know….. Why do Catholic Priests have to remain celi- bate? What is Apostolic Succession and why do we believe in it? Why do we have a Pope, and is he infallible? What is the Communion of Saints, and why do we care? Why do Catho- lics go to Confession and where is that in the bible?

The Bible Study sessions will help us to understand Catholic teachings. Sessions will take place in the parish conference room on the following Tuesdays: February 26th and March 5th. Ses- sions will be 90 minutes, with the morning session at 9:15 AM, and the same session repeated at 7:00 PM. No registration is nec- essary. Please bring a bible. Questions? Call Carol Mullins in the parish office at 627-2910, Ext. 3. ** We will present a One Evening Make-Up Session for the Bible Study Topic “Is Purgato- ry in the bible, and why should we believe in it?”. This make-up session will take place in the conference room on Wednesday, February 20th at 7:15 PM, following the 6:30 PM Mass.

In the Gospel today, Jesus gives us the blessings of serving the poor, hungry and weeping people, for you will then rejoice and leap for joy. But Jesus also teaches us the decisiveness of choice: blessing or woe.

Choosing to help those who are suffering will fill your heart with the blessing of Jesus and indeed your reward will be great in heaven.

If you know anyone in need, please

contact the parish office at 627-2910, and we will put you in touch with the Society of St. Vincent De Paul.

SNOW DAYS AND DAILY MASS

No one should ever put themselves or others in danger to get to Mass. This is especially true on stormy, snowy mornings. When it is treacherous to drive, we must use common sense. On week- days, when Southtowns Catholic School is closed because of snow, do not attempt to get to daily Mass. Also, the plowing of our parking lots may not yet be completed and they may not be prepared for traffic or parked cars. If it is too dangerous to get our children to school, it is also too dangerous to drive to Mass. Do not put yourself at risk.

When Southtowns Catholic School is closed because of snow, Mass will not be celebrated. If the intention for the cancelled Mass is given by you or for a family member, the Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Michael privately that day, so your intention and loved one will still be remembered in prayer. It is all part of living in the Southtowns of Western New York and no one should put themselves in danger on the roads.
