AN ANALYSIS OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE AND MORAL

VALUE OF LET IT GO SONG BY DEMI LOVATO

ABSTRACT

The research interest was to analyze figurative language and moral value in the Demi Lovato’s song because moral is very important and influence human life because teenagers and young people often make a singer their idol. The purpose of study is to know: 1) the figurative language found in Let it go songs by Demi Lovato and 2) moral value found in Let it go songs by Demi Lovato.

Based on the purposes of the study, in analyzing figurative language and moral value in song lyrics, the researcher used qualitative design in this research. The data taken for the study was let it go song. To support the main instrument, the researcher used checklist.

The research findings of this study were, figurative language type’s hyperboles were found 8 times. Hyperbole in the song was used to make an reflection of the singer strong will. The simile in Let it go song was found 5 times. The simile used in this song used the word like and seem. In Let it Go song, there were 11 metaphors. It can be concluded that metaphor was the most frequently appeared figurative language. The personification used in Let it Go only 3 times. Personification is a special feature of the metaphor, which rejects the dead objects of thinking, acting, speaking like humans. Moral value in the let it go song was the writer realizing that she does not need to hide her abilities. She thinks that she’s free from obstacles that she faces when she was child and rejoicing in being able to use her power without fear and limit.

INTRODUCTION

The initial interest of the research subject is figurative language usage from general motivation to explore the relationship between everyday language and music. The researcher decides to choose song especially from Demi Lovato because of her popularity all

forms are commonly viewed as being very similar, they are actually different forms of expression.

The figurative language allows person to be able to assess the personality, character and abilities of a person who uses the language. The better the language style, the better the judgment against it. If someone uses bad figuratives language, people will judge him also (Keraf, 2010: 113).

Song is usually short piece of music with words that are sung. The lyrics (words) of songs are typically of a poetic, rhyming nature, though they may be religious verses or free prose (Cambrige, 2017).

A song can be analysis in several points of view besides figurative languange. S o n g can be analyzed from the moral, social and religious point of view. In this research, Demi Lovato’s songs will be analyzed from the moral value. Moral has a close relationship with character, because moral is reflected by character. Character is the element of prose and moral actually is one of four levels of characterization. These four levels are; physical, social, psychological and moral. These levels help us to standard of attitude that based on the determination of right and wrong which regarded by those who make the standard of moral. Moral in the literature usually reflect the researcher’s mind sight, how her/his view about rightness values, and the kind of it to the readers (Nurgiyantoro, 2010: 321).

Saris’ use Maher Zain Album and the researcher use Demi Lovatos’ album. 2) research variables. Saris’ analyze in poetic and the researchers’ in figurative language. The differences of Saris’ research with the researcher are in the album analyze and research variable. Sari’s analyze Maher Zains’ album and the researcher from Demi Lovatos’. In Sari research, the research variable just in moral value but in the ongoing research the research variable consist of two variable, moral values and figurative language.

RESEARCH METHOD

The aim of the study is to know the use of figurative language and moral value found in Demi Lovatos’ song “’Let it Go”. The researcher find figurative language in Lovatos’ song lyrics and an impetration about the moral aspect in the song lyrics. Based on the purpose of the study in analyzing the figurative language and moral value in song lyric, the

researcher used qualitative design in this research. Qualitative research itself is often called naturalistic research methods for research conducted on natural conditions (natural setting); also known as ethnography, because initially this method is more widely used for research in the field of cultural anthropology; called qualitative methods for the data collected and analysis is more qualitative. In addition qualitative research is often defined as the study did not conduct calculations or numbers (Sugiyono, 2012: 8).

The data in this study is song’s lyrics contained figurative language and moral value taken from Demi Lovatos Albums Let It Go. The data taken for the study was Let It Go Song. The researcher took the Let It Go song by Demi Lovato because the song was popular and contained moral messages and reflected the use of figurative language.

The instruments used for the research were:

collected the data, made an interpretation, classifyied the data, and then made a conclusion based on the purpose of study. 2. Checklist

To support the main instrument, the researcher using checklist. Observation checklist contained of song’s lyrics contains figurative language and the researcher put thick ( ¿ in the row that indicated the figurative language.

The process of data collection:

1) Researcher selected the song from the Demi Lovatos’ song: Let It Go

2) The next step, the researcher downloaded the song from Stafaband.com and then the researcher listened to the song. The researcher listened to the song at least 3 times. The researcher listen the song many times to understand the figurative language and moral value in the song.

3) The researcher transcripted the song to analyzed.

4) Next the researcher attempt to found the word, phrase, and

sentence which contained figurative language and moral value in Demi Lovatos’ songs.

5) The researcher indentified the figurative language in Demi Lovato song.

6) The researcher indentifying the moral value in Demi Lovato song.

7) Finally, the researcher classified it and re-checks data and ready to analyze it.

RESEARCH FINDING

There are four kinds of figurative languages found in songs such as: personification, metaphor, hyperbole, and simile. These kinds of figurative languages are used by the researcher in order to make her creation in this case the songs look alive so we can feel the condition that the researcher tries to show in that song. So, by using the figurative languages and their contextual meaning, the researcher wants to attract our attention and slowly leads us to the theme.

of words, or else the standard order of words, in order to achieve some special meaning or effect. Figures are sometimes described as primarily poetic, but they are integral to the functioning of language and indispensable to all modes of discourse.

Figurative language is a kind of literature that emphasize in connotation meaning than literary one. It is language that uses word or expression with a different meaning than literal interpretation. It can be found in literature and poetry where the writing appeals to the senses. It can do this by giving a word with a specific meaning, by comparing two things in such a way that we find the comparison interesting or by using words that have unusual constructions or sounds. It is characterized by figure of speech that compares, exaggerates, or shows the other sense of the first appearance meaning.

After the researcher indentifying the figurative language and moral value in Demi Lovato song, the researcher classifying it in the table, as below:

The reason why we used figurative language are we can say what we want to say more vividly and forcefully and forcefully by figures than we can by saying it directly, and we can more by figurative statement then we can by literal statement. Figures of speech offer another way of adding extra dimension to language. Figurative language often provides a more effective meaning than a direct statement. In this condition, there are some reasons for that effectiveness that is because figurative language affords imaginative pleasure.

The research conclusion same with the research by Retnayanthi (2015) that states by using the figurative languages and their contextual meaning, the researcher wants to attract our attention and slowly leads us to the theme. The difference between Retnayanthi result with the researcher is in contextual meaning’ result variable. The ongoing research analyzed moral value, while the Retnayanthi’s analyzed contextual meaning.

Let it go song not only analyze from it figurative language, it also from the moral value. Based on the research, moral value in the let it go song are 9 usage. The moral in this song is about the singer that decide to live her live as what she

wants. she obey her community and stand for herself. Analyzing figurative language and moral value contain in the song is important because young people often using song to see the modeling of real life. Because teenagers and young people often make a singer their idol. Therefore, by the absence of higher moral in human life will be declined, moral are considered very important because one of the sources of human happiness is having good morality. Besides, moral education can be learning easily from song because it not feels like study in front of the class.

CONCLUSION

The conclusion of this research can be seen as follow:

SUGGESTION

Related to the result analysis on the lyrics of Demi Lovato’s selected songs, the researcher of the thesis have three purpose and suggestions to the students, teacher, and further researcher.

1. Suggestion for students

The student should be open mind that English is very important. Moreover, study about

figurative language that usually used in song, poem, etc. The using figurative languages is to make the song, poem or our daily speaking more interesting not only in listening but also in reading and writing.

2. Suggestion for the teacher

Related to the

contribution to the English teacher, it is hoped that this study can be a complement for other literary studies especially about figurative languages, when teaching listening, writing and reading.
