HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU BY MHAIRI MCFARLANE PDF

A laugh-out-loud romantic (mis)adventure from the internationally bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane

Anna Alessi – history expert, possessor of a lot of hair and an occasionally filthy mouth – seeks nice man for intelligent conversation and Harlequin romance moments.

Despite the oddballs that keep turning up on her dates, Anna couldn’t be happier. As a 30-something with a job she loves, life has turned out better than she dared dream. However, things weren’t always this way, and her years spent as the butt of schoolyard jokes are ones she’d rather forget.

So when James Fraser – the architect of Anna’s final humiliation at school – walks back into her life, her world is turned upside down. But James seems a changed man. Polite. Mature. Funny, even. People can change, right? So why does Anna feel like she’s a fool to trust him?

Hilarious and poignant, ‘Here’s Looking At You’ will have you laughing one minute and crying the next.

It's summer and, while spending time poolside, I find myself reading more "chick lit" than usual. While not amongst the genre's best, HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, was far from bad, and tickled a certain itch.

As an Anglophile, Brit Chick Lit has always been my favorite subset and while Mhairi McFarlane can't compare to the likes of Helen Fielding, Sophia Kinsella or, my favorite, Marian Keyes, I'd say she holds her own and her characters elicit (positive) comparisons to all three's best-loved books, with a hit of Nick Horby-esque male growing pains thrown in for good measure.

Funny--I laughed out loud several times while reading--slightly profane and often emotionally spot-on, HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU has a catchy premise: a school's put-upon ugly duckling grows up and becomes a swan, only to be unhappily reunited with her school crush/tormentor. James is the one Anna's spent her adult life loathing, but he doesn't remember her at all. Anna learns that, wait a minute, even the popular kids don't come away unscarred, and have plenty of problems of their own, as James shows.

The story, written from both of the main character's perspectives (though Anna's gets a lot more depth), doesn't break new ground, but it's got plenty of fun, singleton hijinks (disastrous dates, relationships gone wrong, colorful best friends on both sides) combined with a few truly insightful and poignant moments that made this read a notch above for me.

Weak points are, yes, the predictability, but more noticeably that some of the writing is a little scattered and, especially in the first half, the chapters occasionally seem a little choppy, as if large chunks were removed and the remaining text wasn't fully re-edited to accommodate. A tighter take could have made this one a five-star read for me. In the end, the quick wit often on display makes me want to seek out more from this author, so four stars it is.

romance; the story of two people falling in love. “Here’s looking at you” doesn’t fall into this trap at all. This is the best kind of romance or chicklit novel – its all about the characters. Anna and James are charming and their slowly evolving relationship from not-quite adversaries to not-quite friends to friends and eventually more than friends is a delightful, smart and endearing read. The dialogue is sharp and insightful, the writing is an easy mix of wit and tenderness and the characters are warm, down to earth and believable (no blushing virgins or billionaires here). I love that the characters are just ordinary people with ordinary lives – no sport stars or ex-military heroes on these pages. Just two people trying to go about their business, navigating through life’s twisting turns. I loved the author’s first book, “You had me at hello” and I have been waiting for another book from her. The first book was good and this one is even better. I can’t wait for the next one.

Anna Alessi is happy with her life after high school; she even finally decides that she will go to her high school reunion despite her fears. Well, that wasn't so bad. EEK! Life does get complicated...

In the meantime Anna has been trying out online dating, and despite repeated disappointments--and one persistent suitor--she's afraid this will be the only way to find Mr. Right. She also has to deal with a new challenge at work and offline relationships and her sister's wedding.

The current English slang can be confusing, and everyone seems to be drinking a lot, but I enjoyed the story, though it started out slowly for me--after the poignant beginning. I wondered how the author would solve the various relationship problems; the story alternates between two viewpoints, btw, so we can understand the male viewpoints too. There's a good deal of introspection, and the reader can sympathize with how confusing life can be...
