Background
• Every day, millions of computer
users share files online. Whether it is music, games, or software, file-sharing can give people access to a wealth of information.
• To share files through a P2P network à download special software that connects your computer to other computers running the same software.
• Millions of users could be connected to each other through this software at one time.
Definition
• General view à Peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing
allows users to share files online through an informal network of computers running the same software. • Carman Carmack à Peer-to-peer file sharing is the
distribution and sharing of digital media using peer-to-peer (P2P) networking technology. P2P file
sharing allows users to access media files such as books, music, movies, and games using a P2P
• File-sharing can give you access to a wealth of information, but it also has a number of risks.
• You could download
copyright-protected material, pornography, or viruses without meaning to
(bundled-spyware)
• Or you could mistakenly allow
