PASSION FOR SAVING COUNTRY IN DAN BROWN’S
DECEPTION POIN (2001) : AN EXISTENTIALIST APPROACH
MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF SURAKARTA
AbstractThis study is aimed to show passion for saving life in Deception point Novel by using existentialist perspective. It is done by establishing two objectives: the first is analyzing the novel based on its structural elements and thesecond is analyzing the novel based on the Existentialist Perspective.This research is qualitative research. Type of data of the study is text and imagetaken from two data sources: primary and secondary. The primary data source isthe Deception Point movie written by Dan Brown released in 2001.While the secondary data sources are other materials taken from books, journals,and internet related to the study. Both data are collected through library researchand analyzed by descriptive analysis.The study comes to the following conclusions. First, based on the structural analysis of each elements, it shows that the character and characterization, plot, setting, theme, andediting are related to each other and form a unity. Second, based on the Existentialanalysis, awareness of the meaning of life leads to meaningful action in human’slife.

Abstrak
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan semangat untuk menyelamatkan kehidupan dalam film Deceptiont point novel dengan menggunakan perspektif eksistensialis. Hal ini dilakukan dengan mendirikan dua tujuan: pertama adalah menganalisis novel berdasarkan elemen struktural dan yang kedua adalah menganalisis novel berdasarkan Perspektif eksistensialis. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif. Jenis data penelitian ini adalah teks dan gambar yang diambil dari dua sumber data: primer dan sekunder. Sumber data primer adalah film Titik Muslihat ditulis oleh Dan Brown dirilis pada tahun 2001. Sementara sumber data sekunder adalah bahan lain yang diambil dari buku-buku, jurnal, dan internet yang berkaitan dengan penelitian. Kedua data yang dikumpulkan melalui penelitian perpustakaan dan dianalisis dengan analisis deskriptif. Studi ini datang ke kesimpulan berikut. Pertama, berdasarkan analisis struktural masing-masing elemen, itu menunjukkan bahwa karakter dan karakterisasi, plot, pengaturan, tema, dan editing terkait satu sama lain dan membentuk satu kesatuan. Kedua, berdasarkan analisis eksistensial, kesadaran akan arti hidup mengarah ke tindakan yang berarti dalam kehidupan manusia.
Kata Kunci: Passion for saving life, Deception Point, Meaningful Action, Existentialist Perspective.

1. INTRODUCTIONDeception Point novel is scientific novel written by Dan Brown. It becomes his third novel after Angel and Demond novel. It was published by Pocket Book in 2001, and it consists of 557 pages. Daniel "Dan" Brown (born June 22, 1964) is an American author of thriller fiction who is best known for the 2003 bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code. Brown's novels are treasure hunts set in a 24-hour period and feature the recurring themes of cryptography, keys, symbols, codes, and conspiracy theories. His books have been translated into 52 languages, and as of 2012, sold over 200 million copies. Three of them, Angels & Demons (2000), The Da Vinci Code (2003), and Inferno (2013), have been/are being adapted into films.
There is a study that deals Deception Point which conducted by The first Researcher is Shinta Nur Chasanah (2010) Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, Conflict of Interest Between Individual And State in Dan Brown’s Deception Point (2001) : A Sociological Approach Based on the title and background, the writer focuses on analyzing is the conflict of interest between individual and state in Dan Brown’s Deception Point.
Based on the previous research above, the positioning of this research is to try extending previous studies on Existentialist. In the study the researcher gives title: Passion for Saving Country in Dan Brown Deception Point (2001) an Existentialist Approach.
2. RESEARCH METHOD
In this research, the writer uses qualitative research. There are some steps to conduct the research. Firstly, the writer determines the type of the study. Secondly, the writer determines the object of the study. Thirdly, the writer determines the data and data sources. Fourthly, the writer determines the technique of data collection. At last, the writer determines the technique of data analysis.
The type of data in this study is texts that consist of words, phrases, and sentences. There are two types of data sources in this research. First, the primary data source which consists of text of Deception Point novel Second, the secondary data sources or the references that relates to the study which picking up by the writer from the books or website. In analyzing the novel, the writer uses descriptive analysis as the technique of data analysis.
3. RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
The novel is analyzed by using Existentialist theory. Existentialist analysis consists of five major issues. There are: Being, Existence before essence, Consciousness, Freedom to choose, Anxiety, Transcendence of Ego, Nothingness and Pathos (Passion). Through Deception Point novel, Dan Brown shows the major character Rachel. In this novel he gives a good motivation to human that the life has to meaningful, each life has to goal, the goal of life has to reach whatever the goal which is impossible to reach but human should try to reach it. Human is the master who is created by the good in perfect condition more then another creatures. Rachel can reach his goal to find his meaning of life as a responsible man in the end of the novel.
3.1Being
Being is divided into two: Being-in-itself which is concerning in thing’s existence and being-for-itself which is discussing the human’s existence, the existence of the thing becomes meaningful based on the human who give meaning to that thing. The being-in-itself in the novel Deception Point shows the being of the major character.
The first view is based on Rachel sexton that gives meaning politics is something bad, it can make her feeling confused. She has to decide what is important beetween family and his job. politician help people just for gain a power. They do not think about the impact of act, she views that politicts make her feeling confused.
3.2Existence before Essence
The process of becoming can be seen in the existence before essence. A person has being and continues to be existence, essence here has meaning that the human who has died, it becomes essence. Every people has existence, the existence is the sign of goal, the goal is what he wants to become. In the Deception Point novel major characters Rachel are analyzed on aspect of the existence before essence on the process of the becoming.
The first character is Rachel. She defines himself as a researcher who does not need to care about others. in the process of becoming, Rachel is influenced by her past. Her mother was died when she was a child. Rachel previously is careless about anyone mind, because the spiritual consciousness he begins to realize that he must change his attitude. Then because of the conditions in the reseacher procces with tolland, she realizes that many people lie and take advantae to the other. She also finds the meaning of his life after meeting with Michael Tolland. Rachel's life changes completely. Rachel has undergone a long journey in the course of his life, and finally he decides to become the good researcher without any suspicious.
3.3Consciousness (Cogito)
For Marx, Consciousness is the aspect of existentialist which is as point to analyze and to show the existence of the major character, the existence implies by consciousness, it is requirement in human existence. As the aspect of existentialist in Deception Point Novel, it will be analyzed two major characters with goal to differentiate the consciousness of each people that are Danny Rachel, and Maddy Bown.
Rachel consciousness arises when her team had been taken out by special force. Things seem to be going great, until some of the civilian scientists who are there confirming the discovery start finding faults in the authenticity of this rock. Rachel gets caught up in a mad chase to find the truth behind this forged meteorite before she loses her life to the Delta Force, a hit squad determined not to let the truth get out.
She is realise that her reasearch has obtacle by the other politian. The authenticity of the discovery seems beyond doubt. But when the team discovers a seemingly insignificant anomaly, a Delta Force team that was secretly monitoring them attacks, killing Ming and Mangor while leaving Rachel, Tolland and Marlinson to perish on an ice floe. The three, however, are picked up by the Navy submarine USS Charlotte and manage to inform the president's adviser – Marjorie Tench – and the NRO director – William Pickering – about the incident. Tench hushes up their report while Pickering takes it seriously and sends them an air transport.
3.4Freedom to Choose
All of characters have freedom to choose but in this point the researcher will analyze the major character’s. The first character is Rachel. Freedom to choose happens when Rachel knows that her father is one of the candidates of precident. And she work for NRO that means work for President Zachary Herney as candidate. Rachel knows that her choice work for fairfak and research in NRO will getting bad impact to her father as the president candidates.
In this case, no one influences her to make decision to choose except himself to choose act like that. The freedom is the requirement of choice. In this situation, Rachel chooses her work in NRO while her father want quiting the job feel. Firstly, he doesn’t obey her father. Then she does not leave her job.

3.5AnxietyThere is condition in which human has to choose, in this condition there is one choice which want to choose but he chooses the other choice, to make clear the differentiation anxiety. The researcher analyze the major characters in Deception Point novel,
Rachel begins anxiety, when should do the research and have take a risk of her life. Rachel Sexton is the "estranged" daughter of a Senator who is running for the Presidency. She works for the NSA and is called to the White House by the President to help be an unbiased observer to a secret prior to its release. The secret turns out to be something that could catapult NASA into the next century.
But, when she and the other impartial observers discover something that is out of the ordinary they are suddenly hunted down. There is a Special Ops team that is out to kill them.
On the other hand she doesn’t want break her father reputation with decision, but she needs work with NRO. It is the way Rachel to choose her life. In this Situation she becomes anxiety. In his mind there are two choices: Rachel wants her job in NRO. Another choice is Rachel doesn’t want give bad impact to her father. It is a difficult choice to decide. Finally decides to stay in her job.
Those indicate the anxiety of major character. The choice will be appear with responsibility and consequences, that is anxiety when the people has chosen choice in their life
3.6Transcendence of Ego
Transcendence of ego is the condition human does something which out of his ego, the analysis of transcendence of ego will analyze the major character that has achieved the transcendence of ego, the explanation of transcendence of ego will explain according to this analysis Transcendence of ego of the Deception Point novel comes Rachel followed President Herney out onto the glistening gangway of Air Force One. She meets the President. She work for President. Although Rachel has a relationship with Senator Sexton as the President Candidate, Rachel is Sexton’s daugter. She knows that it will give bad impact to her father in campaign. As a reseacher she decides to take a job in NRO.
In this phenomenon Rachel becomes helpful because he takes his existence to take and continue her job in NRO. Rachel must ignore her relationship as Senator Sexton’s daughter . It is the out ego of Rachel who wants helps president than keeping he father name in campaign. Those show the level of out ego by Rachel.
Rachel followed President Herney out onto the glistening gangway of Air Force One. As theydescended the stairs, Rachel felt the bleak March air clearing her mind. Unfortunately, clarity only made the President’s claims seem more outlandish than before. He does soomething that is needed by other people. He feels that he is a part of society and have tendency to do the best for their society as well as hero.
3.7Nothingness
Human in nothingness is he does not begin to existence, he has no aware to choose, and to define himself. In this case human is in the nothingness condition, because he can not define himself. At this case nothing is such kind condition which people can make his existence, can make his being, Nothingness in Deception Point novel begins in the existence of Rachel, He is awoman who lives in US.she works in NRO as common person like sombedyelse. As an employe Rachel parked and crossed the manicured grounds to the main entrance, where a carved granite sign announced. She works for the NSA and is called to the White House by the President to help be an unbiased observer to a secret prior to its release. She is not involved in case anything. She is everything unsual not yet occured. She just not yet decide something important. So she is in the nothingness.
Rachel hasn’t been any sense of existence to do something, in his thinking just how to get diamond and being rich. But he doesn’t act anything. So it can be concluded that he is in nothingness because he hasn’t shown his existence.
3.8Nothingness Pathos (Passion)
example of this desire for something beyond the purely finite. It is a taste of what could be, if only it could continue beyond the boundaries of time and space.
As the analogy implies, humans seek something beyond the here and now. The desire to live, and to live in the right way, for the right reasons, and with the right desires, is a holy and sacred force. Rachel leaves her father’s way as politian, she becomes a reseacher. He has passions to be a good researcher and useful for her country. Rachel desires to live in the right way. It is not thought that gets through life. It is action and what motivates and sustains action is passion, the desire to overcome hardships, pain, and suffering. Rachel is influenced by his past. He has lost her mother. Rachel previously is careless about nothing; she begins to realize that science, knowledge and research can change human life.
3.9 Discussion
The analysis of the major character in Deception Point novel by Dan Brown shows the meaning of life which is meaningful in life. The major characters shows the important part of construction the meaning of life which is in this novel based on the Sartre’s existentialism.
Through Deception Point novel, Dan Brown shows the major character Rachel. In this novel he gives a good motivation to human that the life has to meaningful, each life has to goal, the goal of life has to reach whatever the goal which is impossible to reach but human should try to reach it. Human is the master who is created by the good in perfect condition more then another creatures. Rachel can reach his goal to find his meaning of life as a responsible man in the end of the novel. He has awareness to change himself in everything. It can be seen in this novel by helping Solomon. This is the motivation for us to keep doing the best for our activity in reaching our goal or finding meaning of life like Rachel action to save his friends and society. Although in the beginning of the novel Rachel is shown as less responsible man, but by the journey and his action to help other, finally Rachel can aware and become a good man.
Through Deception Point novel, Dan Brown shows the existence of human is different based on their choice, act, being, which decide the existence of people, to exist human have to choose the goal of his life, that starts on his being which has sign an action that show his goal in life. Those have requirement to define his existence that is consciousness, human need consciousness to reach his goal, if he does not conscious it means that he has no existence which defines him. It implies at the major characters which has his own existence in which reach the changing. All of the activity based on what is the goal in this life. He conscious on that reach and defines himself as in his goal, Rachel is in full conscious when he gets in his existence he has to freedom to choose, That is indicate that every human have a being and also existence. He makes his own existence by his freedom to choose in his life which indicates that the people has free to choose, no one influence him to choose, and also he has to aware in choosing. Through Deception Point novel. Dan Brown shows the existence of human always gives the choice in his life everything what the choice is based on his goal at his life, the requirement of the choice must be freedom to choose, no one who influences his choice, to choose human must be aware and also has consciousness, before human choose he will face such several choice which occurs, but he must take one choice in that condition, because the choice does not think before. This phenomenon is always occurs in human existence, human will face the condition which he has to choose one of the choice directly this phenomena is called anxiety.

Finally Dan Brown builds meaningful story which motivates the audience of Deception Point novel by the Rachel’s existence, Rachel which has less care to his children, he chooses all choices which relate the choice of the children to reach his goal, and at last he can prove to himself as a responsible father in saving the society from the treatments. The aspect of existentialism occurs in this novel, being, existence before essence, freedom to choose, anxiety and finally nothingness build in this novel, it represent that there are existentialist aspect in this novel.
4. CONCLUSION
Based on the analysis in the previous chapter, the researcher draws the following of Passion for saving country.
Firstly, based on the structural analysis, it is evident that in the movie, Dan Brown wants to convey a moral message that “the awareness of life meaning leads to meaningful action”. It so doing the character of Rachel be successful to get much impression for a scientific-fiction novel; the continually plot from the beginning, the middle, and the end; the point of view have been done in all ways and precisely appropriate applied in the story in the most setting of place; and the other technical elements have the unity and successful relate to one another then finally formulated into good quality of a novel. Secondly, based on the Existentialist analysis Deception Point is the novel which has the existentialist aspect that builds in the story and character in this movie. Existentialism reflects individual context in expressing life meaning through consciousness, freedom, anxiety, and transcendence of ego. All of these aspects become parts of existentialism philosophy.
