Abstract

In this paper we study the relation between the neighborhood com-plex of a graph, introduced by Lov´asz, and the local finiteness of the graph by means of the ordinal functions Ord and Ht . On the other hand we describe the neighborhood complex associated to the product graph.

Key words and phrases: locally finite graph, transfinite height, Borst’s order.

The neighborhood complex of a graph was introduced by Lov´asz (see [6]) to give a negative answer to Kneser’s conjecture. Lov´asz studied the relation between the chromatic number of a graph and the connectivity of its neigh-borhood complex. Later several authors (see [8] and [7]) have studied some properties of this simplicial complex, mainly related to its homology groups. In this paper we are going to study the behaviour of the neighborhood complex

under two ordinal functions, that in the finite case represent the degree of the graph. On the other hand we describe the neighborhood complex associated to the product graph.

By G = (V, E) we mean a (non necessarily finite) graph, that is,V is a set, called vertex set, andEis a set of unordered pairs of distinct points ofV, called edge set. If we suppose that for every vertexv, the set of edges incident with v is finite (equivalently, the set of vertices with common neighbor is finite) we say that the graph is locally finite.

We are going to associate to each graph a simplicial complex, called the neighborhood complex, in the following way (see [2], just before theorem 4.2).

Definition 1. For any graph G = (V, E) let N(G) denote the simplicial

complex, called the neighborhood complex of G, whose vertex set is V and whose simplices are those finite sets of vertices which have a common neighbor. That is,

N(G) ={σ∈FinV :∃v∈V :{a, v} ∈E,∀a∈σ}.

For a finite graphGit is clear that the degree ofGis max{|σ|:σ∈ N(G)}. We will use the ordinal functions Ord and Ht associated to a simplicial complex and a partial ordered set respectively. We quote the definition of Ord from [4].

Definition 2. LetLbe a set. For a subsetM of FinLand aσ∈ {∅} ∪FinL,

let

Mσ={τ∈FinL:σ∪τ∈M and σ∩τ =∅}.

If a ∈ L and σ = {a}, we write Ma instead of Mσ (Ma is called in some

occasions LinkM(a) the link ofainM).

We define OrdM as follows:

1. OrdM = 0, ifM =∅.

2. For an ordinal number α > 0 we say that OrdM ≤ α if and only if OrdMa < αfor eachaL.

3. OrdM =αifOrdM ≤αandOrd(M)≤β is false forβ < α.

4. Furthermore, we say that OrdM exists if and only if there exists some ordinal numberαsuch that OrdM ≤αholds.

Theorem 3. Let G= (V, E)be an infinite graph.

1. OrdN(G) = max{|σ|: σ ∈ N(G)}, whenever the maximum exists (in particular ifGis finite, and thus in this caseOrd(N(G))isdim(N(G))+ 1 the dimension of the complex).

2. OrdN(G)exists if and only if Gis locally finite.

3. IfG is locally finite, thenOrdN(G)≤ω0.

Proof:

1. Obvious.

2. From lemma 2.1.3 of [4], OrdN(G) does not exist if and only if there exists a sequence of distinct elements{ai}∞

i=1 such that there existsvn,

n = 1, . . . ,∞, in V such that {ai}n

i=1 are neighborhoods of vn. So if

such a sequence exists there are two possible situations. If there are only a finite number of distinctvn, then one of them has an infinite set

of neighbors. If there are an infinite set of distinctvn, thena1 has an

infinite set of neighbors. In both cases the graph is not locally finite. Conversely if the graph is not locally finite it is easy to find the desired sequence.

3. We are going to prove that N(G)a ⊆ N(Ga) for every vertex a V,

where Ga = (V − {a}, Ea) is the graph with edge set Ea ={{v, w} ∈

E:v6=a, w6=aand{a, w} ∈E or{v, a} ∈E}.

On the one handN(G)a ={σFinV :a /σ, σ∪ {a} ∈ N(G)}={σ

FinV − {a}:∃v∈V − {a}:{b, v} ∈E,∀b∈σand{a, v} ∈E}. On the other handN(Ga) ={σFinV − {a}:vV :{b, v} ∈Ea,bσ}.

Now letσ∈ N(G)a, thenσFinV − {a}and there existsvV such

that {b, v} ∈ E,∀b ∈ σ and {a, v} ∈ E, so {b, v} ∈ Ea b σ and

σ∈ N(Ga). (Note thatN(Ga) is the deletionN(G)\aof theainN(G)

and for a general simplicial complex ∆ we haveLink∆(a)⊆∆\a.)

Now the local finiteness ofGimplies that Ga is a finite graph for each

a∈V, so OrdN(Ga) is finite and OrdN(G)aOrdN(Ga) (see lemma

2.1.1 (3) of [4]) is finite for eacha∈V, and finally OrdN(G)≤ω0 as

desired.

Definition 4. LetP be a poset and letP0be the set of maximal elements of

P. Let define for every ordinal numberα

Pα={x∈P :∀y∈P :x < y⇒y∈

[

β<α

Pβ}.

Clearly Pα ⊂ Pη if α < η, so there exists an ordinal number α such that

Pα=Pα+1. Hence we say that the transfinite height of the posetP exists if

Pα=P (in any other case we say it does not exists) and then we define the

transfinite height of the posetP as Ht (P) = Min{αordinal :Pα=P}.

In order to relate this function with the neighborhood complex of a graph we will use the following canonical way to associate a poset to each simplicial complex (again [2], section 9).

Definition 5. LetK be a simplicial complex. We define the poset of faces

ofK as Kordered by inclusion, P(K) = (K,⊂).

Using the preceding tools we can prove the following result about the relation of the local finiteness of a graph G and the value that the function Ht gets in the posetP(N(G)).

Theorem 6. Let G= (V, E)be an infinite graph.

1. HtP(N(G)) = max{|σ|:σ∈ N(G)}, whenever the maximum exists (in particular ifGis finite, and thus in this caseHt (N(G))isdim(N(G))+1

the dimension of the complex).

2. HtP(N(G))exists if and only ifGis locally finite.

3. IfG is locally finite, thenHtP(N(G))≤ω0.

Proof:

1. Obvious.

2. Note that the existence of Ht is equivalent to the existence of Ord (see (2) of corollary 3.4, [1]), so the existence of HtP(N(G)) comes from (1) of 3.

3. For eachσ ∈ N(G) there are only a finite number of η ∈ N(G) such thatσ⊆η, so the set{η∈ N(G) :σ≤η}is finite. Then ifn=card{η ∈ N(G) :σ≤η}, it is clear that σ∈P(N(G)n. Finally this means that

The following definition is the natural extension to the infinite case of that

We are finally going to relate the neighborhood complex of the product graph with the neighborhood complexes of the factors.

can be described as Lv2∈V2N(G1)v2⋆
