Description of def-t and DMF-T Index Among Children with Snacking Habit
on Sugary Foods and Drinks

ABSTRACT
Snacking is the habit of consumption of foods and/ or drinks in between main
meals. During school years, children have been introduced to a variety of foods
and drinks available in school area and they are free to choose without monitored
by their parents. However, frequent consumption of high sugary foods and drinks
are associated with the occurrence of dental caries. The purpose of this research is
to obtain the data of caries index among children with snacking habit on sugary
foods and drinks.
The method of choosing sample was technique purposive sampling. The
subjects were 76 children aged 6 to 12 years old who came to Rumah Sakit Gigi
Dan Mulut (RSGM), Sekeloa. The research method for this study was descriptive
study with survey technique. A questionnaire consisted of 2 sections: oral hygiene
habits and snacking habits on sugary foods and drinks among children followed
by a clinical examination to determine dental caries was carried out.
Based on the result, it shows that def-t index is 4.37 while DMF-T is 2.30.
In conclusion, the def-t caries index among children with snacking habit is
moderate while DMF-T index is low.
