BACTERIAL PATTERN AND ANTIBIOTIC SENSITIVITY PROFILE IN WOUND DEHISCENCE CASES ON POST CRANIOTOMY PATIENT IN HASAN SADIKIN

ABSTRACT

Background: Surgical wound infection (SWI) was one of the most fearsome postoperative complications in surgery. Despite of improvements in surgical practices, SWI continue to complicate surgical cases, including neurosurgery cases. The aim of this study was to identify causative agents of SWI in post craniotomy patients in Hasan Sadikin Hospital Neurosurgery Ward and its antibiotic sensitivity profiles.

Material and Methods: This observational study was conducted for a period of 1 year (January to December 2010) using medical records of patients who had been admitted in Neurosurgery Ward in Hasan Sadikin Hospital. Bacterial isolation, culture, identification and antibiotic sensitivity test were performed at Microbiology Laboratory of Hasan Sadikin Hospital Clinical Pathology Department.

Result: During our observation period, we found that there … cases of craniotomies, 3 of them later present with SWI. From those 3 cases we found Staphylococcus hominis,

Klebsiella pneumonia and Enterobacter cloacaceae as causating agents. Those

microorganisms had shown multiple resistence to antibiotics.

Conclusion: From this study we found several cases of post craniotomy patients admitted in Neurosurgery Ward that acquired SWI. Further education and awareness among health care workers as well as adherence to standard guidelines should be used to eliminate it.
