Dengan mengucapkan syukur kepada Yang Maha Kuasa, kami sajikan modul yang berjudul ‘EXPLAINING SIGNS AND SYMBOLS’ kepada para rekan guru dan siswa siswi SMK. Modul ini berfungsi sebagai bahan pemelajaran tambahan dalam menguasai subkompetensi bernomor ‘A14’ dalam kurikulum bagian 2.

BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. DESKRIPSI Modul berjudul ‘EXPLAINING SIGNS AND SYMBOLS’ ini merupakan rangkaian pelajaran mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk SMK. Pada Kurikulum bagian II, disebutkan bahwa subkompetensi yang bernomor ‘A14’ ini diperuntukkan bagi siswasiswi pada tingkat Novice, yakni mereka yang skor standardized TOEICnya berada pada rentang 10 – 300. Subkompetensi ini saling melengkapi dengan sub kompetensi terkait lainnya. Setelah mempelajari modul ini, siswa dapat menjelaskan arti dan makna dari tandatanda dan symbol yang diberikan. Subkompetensi yang diperoleh bisa membantu siswa dalam kehidupan seharihari, misalnya untuk mengidentifikasi arti dan makna dari tandatanda dan symbol yang mereka temui di dalam lingkungannya.
B. PRASYARAT
Modul ini adalah modul ketiga pemelajaran Bahasa Inggris, yang mempunyai prasyarat awal telah memiliki kemampuan pada sub kompetensi
A1 – A13 sebelum memulai pemelajaran.
Sebelum masuk ke pemelajaran, siswa perlu membawa kamus Bahasa Indonesia – Bahasa Inggris yang memadai. Siswa diharapkan bersikap proaktif menemukan ungkapan/frase/katakata kunci yang lazim digunakan untuk menjelaskan arti dan makna dari tandatanda dan symbol yang diberikan. Guru berperan sebagai fasilitator yang membantu revisi, dan jika siperlukan menambah apa yang sudah dikoleksi siswa. Guru juga berfungsi sebagai model untuk kegiatan keterampilan berbicara, atau penyedia sarana/pendamping yang bisa dijadikan model untuk keterampilan tersebut. Selain itu, guru adalah assessor untuk menilai pencapaian hasil belajar.
D. TUJUAN AKHIR
Setelah mempelajari modul ini, siswa diharapkan bisa menggunakan ungkapan untuk memahami arti dari tandatanda dan symbol yang mereka temui dalam kehidupan seharihari. Siswa dianggap menguasai bahan pemelajaraan ini jika telah mampu menunjukkan kriteria unjuk kerja tersebut di atas, dalam bentuk tes lisan (performance test) dan tes tertulis (written test).
D. KOMPETENSI
Sub Kompetensi ‘Explaining Signs and Symbols’ merupakan suatu titik pada rangkaian Kompetensi kemampuan berkomunikasi dalam Bahasa Inggris pada tingkat Novice, yaitu siswa pada placement test memiliki skor Standardized TOEIC 10 – 300. Ruang Lingkup sub kompetensi ini meliputi ungkapan untuk menjelaskan arti dan makna
tandatanda dan symbol, ‘question tags’, ‘conditional sentence type 1’, dan lain sebagainya. E. Rayhan : Okay. What can I do for you? Bunga : My teacher gave me some symbols related with traveling and I’m not so sure about their meanings. Rayhan : Well, look at the first picture here. This picture means that you can use airplane for traveling. It’s air travel. Bunga : Oh, I see. And about the second picture? Rayhan : It means you have to pay attention to the direction on the street. Bunga : And for the last one. It means that I have to bring currency
based on the country that I’ll visit, doesn’t it? Rayhan : That’s right.
