KATA PENGANTAR

Dengan mengucapkan syukur kepada Yang Maha Kuasa, kami sajikan  modul yang berjudul ‘EXPLAINING SIGNS AND SYMBOLS’ kepada para  rekan   guru   dan   siswa   siswi   SMK.   Modul   ini   berfungsi   sebagai   bahan  pemelajaran tambahan dalam menguasai sub­kompetensi bernomor ‘A14’  dalam kurikulum bagian 2.

Terima kasih kami sampaikan kepada PEMDA DKI melalui SUBDIS SMK  dan tim instruktur dari direktorat yang telah memberikan dukungan tenaga  dan moril yang besar selama kami mengerjakan modul ini.

BAB I PENDAHULUAN A. DESKRIPSI Modul berjudul ‘EXPLAINING SIGNS AND SYMBOLS’ ini merupakan  rangkaian pelajaran mata pelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk SMK. Pada  Kurikulum bagian II, disebutkan bahwa sub­kompetensi yang bernomor  ‘A14’   ini   diperuntukkan   bagi   siswa­siswi   pada   tingkat   Novice,   yakni  mereka yang skor standardized TOEIC­nya berada pada rentang 10 –  300. Sub­kompetensi ini saling melengkapi dengan sub kompetensi  terkait   lainnya.   Setelah   mempelajari   modul   ini,   siswa   dapat  menjelaskan   arti   dan   makna   dari   tanda­tanda   dan   symbol   yang  diberikan.   Sub­kompetensi   yang   diperoleh   bisa   membantu   siswa  dalam kehidupan sehari­hari, misalnya untuk mengidentifikasi arti dan  makna   dari   tanda­tanda   dan   symbol   yang   mereka   temui   di   dalam  lingkungannya.

B.  PRASYARAT

Modul   ini   adalah   modul   ketiga   pemelajaran   Bahasa   Inggris,   yang  mempunyai   prasyarat   awal   telah   memiliki   kemampuan   pada   sub­ kompetensi  

A1 –  A13 sebelum memulai pemelajaran.

Sebelum   masuk   ke   pemelajaran,   siswa   perlu   membawa   kamus  Bahasa Indonesia – Bahasa Inggris yang memadai. Siswa diharapkan  bersikap   proaktif   menemukan   ungkapan/frase/kata­kata   kunci   yang  lazim digunakan untuk menjelaskan arti dan makna dari tanda­tanda  dan symbol yang diberikan.   Guru berperan sebagai fasilitator yang  membantu   revisi,   dan   jika   siperlukan   menambah   apa   yang   sudah  dikoleksi  siswa.   Guru   juga   berfungsi   sebagai   model   untuk   kegiatan  keterampilan berbicara, atau penyedia sarana/pendamping yang bisa  dijadikan model untuk keterampilan tersebut. Selain  itu,  guru adalah  assessor untuk menilai pencapaian hasil belajar.

D.  TUJUAN AKHIR

Setelah mempelajari modul ini, siswa diharapkan bisa menggunakan  ungkapan   untuk   memahami   arti   dari   tanda­tanda   dan   symbol   yang  mereka   temui   dalam   kehidupan   sehari­hari.   Siswa     dianggap  menguasai   bahan   pemelajaraan   ini   jika   telah   mampu   menunjukkan  kriteria   unjuk     kerja   tersebut   di   atas,   dalam   bentuk   tes   lisan  (performance test) dan tes tertulis (written test).

D.  KOMPETENSI

Sub Kompetensi ‘Explaining Signs and Symbols’ merupakan suatu titik  pada   rangkaian   Kompetensi   kemampuan   berkomunikasi   dalam  Bahasa Inggris pada tingkat Novice, yaitu siswa pada placement test  memiliki   skor   Standardized   TOEIC   10   –   300.   Ruang   Lingkup   sub­ kompetensi ini meliputi ungkapan untuk menjelaskan arti dan makna 

tanda­tanda dan symbol, ‘question tags’, ‘conditional sentence type 1’,  dan lain sebagainya.   E.  CEK KEMAMPUAN Berikut ini disajikan beberapa soal untuk menguji kemampuan siswa  akan sub­kompetensi yang akan dipelajari dalam modul ini. 1. Sedangkan they digunakan untuk  everyone, everybody, someone,  somebody, no one, nobody. (h) Nothing is wrong, is it? (i) Nobody called on the  phone, did they? (j) You’ve never been there,  have you? Kalimat yang mempunyai makna  negative akan mempunyai positif  tag (affirmative tag) (k) I am supposed to be here,  aren’t I? TASK 6. READING Read the dialogue carefully and answer the questions correctly. Dialogue : Amir : Hi, Wan! You are so early at school this afternoon. Ridwan : Yes, I am, aren’t I? It seems there’s no one here except you. Amir : Right. But, I don’t think the others will be late. They’ve never    been late, have they? Ridwan : No. They’re usually about on time. Amir : I’m afraid that one will be absent, though. Ridwan : Who? Amir : Rina. She went to Ujungpandang last week, didn’t she? Write a short dialogue based on the sign and the symbols given. Look at  the example below.             Bunga : I heard that you work at the travel agent. Could you help  me    with my homework related with your job? Rayhan : Okay. What can I do for you? Bunga : My teacher gave me some symbols related with traveling    and I’m not so sure about their meanings. Rayhan : Well, look at the first picture here. This picture means that    you can use airplane for traveling. It’s air travel. Bunga : Oh, I see. And about the second picture? Rayhan : It means you have to pay attention to the direction on the     street. Bunga : And for the last one. It means that I have to bring currency 

  based on the country that I’ll visit, doesn’t it? Rayhan : That’s right.

Now, make your dialogue based on these pictures.
