What is Community Based Disaster

Basic Emergency First Aid Techniques

Let’s Get Prepared, Films about Community Based Disaster Management

A brief description of the films on this disk

What is Community Based Disaster Management? (17 minutes)

This film explains the importance of local communities being prepared to

face disaster, and introduces the basic concept of community based disaster management. It features messages delivered by several Indonesian celebrities

and footage from CBDM activities throughout Indonesia; it is a tool that can help

to motivate and empowers everyday people to take responsibility for the safety of their own communities.

Disaster Management Community Group (16 minutes)

This short drama is an engaging story that demonstrates how people in a local community worked together with their village leader, community members and other local stakeholders to establish a community group to manage disasters. The group then implements activities for community disaster preparedness and

management. This film addresses some of the key questions that arise when

establishing disaster management community groups in Indonesia.

Preparedness Planning (17 minutes)

This film shows examples from many different areas of Indonesia where communities are planning and preparing for possible disasters. The film helps

people to better understand the basic principles of CBDM. It covers risk assessment, disaster mapping, evacuation planning, community wide disaster response practice drills, and collaboration and cooperation with key stakeholders for disaster management.

Basic Emergency First Aid Techniques (17 minutes)

This instructional video explains how to administer first response (basic first

aid) in an emergency situation. The information in this video enables every-day people to save lives and respond effectively should a disaster occur.

A brief description of the contents on this disk

Flood and Landslide (8 minutes)

Badu has sold his hillside of ‘worthless’ trees to an illegal logging company, “When you’re rich,” he says, tossing his plastic cup and container to the ground, “you don’t have to cook, and you don’t have to clean up.” Badu’s rubbish is washed towards an already blocked drain. The water level is rising.

Earthquake (7 minutes)

It’s a quiet day in Desa Wanabalu. Badu is stacking high shelves in his shop with heavy boxes - not a good idea in an earthquake zone. The Little Girl is shopping

for equipment for her emergency bag- batteries, rice, first aid kit, candles and

matches, mineral water and a blanket.

Tsunami (8 minutes)

Badu, a fisherman, has built his house close to the beach and chopped down the trees that would normally protect him from the sea. Suddenly, the ground

shakes: an earthquake. The Little Girl moves away from the hut, crouches down and sensibly covers her head with her bucket until it’s over. Then, when she looks up, she sees the water leaving the bay and sounds the alarm.

Volcano (6 minutes)

Badu is relaxing after a quiet morning’s work in his little town at the foot of the volcano. Today, there is smoke coming from the summit and a rumbling noise is getting louder, but Badu has heard it all before. When the Little Girl approaches with her emergency backpack, marked with its green square and white cross, he tells her the volcano hasn’t erupted in centuries, “It’s perfectly safe.”

Two Gardens – about peace building (10 minutes)

Taka is not what you’d call a hard worker. Taka doesn’t appear to have time to work both of Dodon’s gardens, so Dodon brings in Dani to clear and cultivate one of them. Dani is a newcomer to the village who doesn’t speak their language well.

This educational video uses ‘Puppets’ to introduce

the key aspects of community disaster response,
