This proceedings is t he out com e of the Int ernat ional Conference on Sm all Islands and Coral Reef s (ISSIC) 2010 held from 4-5 August 2010 in Ambon, M aluku, Indonesia. With t he endorsem ent and funding support of the W orld Bank-funded Coral Reef Rehabilit ation and M anagem ent Program Phase II (COREM AP II), it s Nat ional Coordinat ion Unit toget her wit h t he Provincial Government of M aluku and the Pat t imura Universit y, successfully brought t oget her governm ent officials, researchers, scient ist s, represent at ives of int ernat ional organizat ions, st udent s, practitioners and t he privat e sect or t o discuss ongoing developm ent s and init iat ives in sm all islands and coral reefs conservat ion and managem ent.
This proceedings cont ained 32 t echnical papers ranging from coral reef conservat ion policies, coast al com munit y em pow erm ent , M arine Prot ect ed Areas, sm all islands developm ent, sm all islands eco-t ourism , sea m apping, inst itutional capacit y building, clim at e change impacts, alt ernat ive energy developm ent and ot her relevant t opics.
With the collaboration and cooperat ion of various sect ors w orking t oward sm all islands developm ent and coral reef conservat ion, t he int ernat ional conference provided a very t im ely and import ant gat hering w hich highlighted t he ongoing effort s and initiat ives of various sect ors in sm all islands developm ent and coral reef conservat ion in t he rest of the w orld. The event also served as a venue not only t o share know ledge, informat ion and experiences in coral reef m anagem ent , but also inspired each and every part icipant s to continuously pursue current init iatives t hat support sust ainabilit y of sm all islands developm ent.
This proceedings provided det ailed inform at ion on t he t echnical papers t hat have been prepared and present ed based on t he lat est researches, academ ic st udies and individual undert akings in the area of (i) Int egrat ed Small Islands and Coral Reef M anagem ent ; (ii) Small Islands and Associat ed Ecosyst em s Dynamics; (iii) Small Islands and Coral Reef Inform at ion; (iv) Economic Opport unit ies for Sm all Islands and Coral Reefs; (v) Clim at e Change Adapt at ion and M it igat ion for Sm all Islands and Coral Reefs; and (vi) Social Issues and Accept ance in Traditional Small Islands Communities.
I t rust the readers w ill find t his proceedings useful and info rmat ive w hen considering how best t o incorporat e small islands development and coral reef conservat ion in cont inuously pursuing the goals of sust ainable development .
