CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
Vocabulary is important for language and of typical language learners. Without sufficient vocabulary, student can not communicate effectively and the student can not express his ideas in both oral and written forms. We are just human beings. We need to talk to somebody else. We need to communicate with other people. Through spoken and written forms. For the reasons, communication plays an important role in our live. To communicate, we need some media. Here language is the important media to communicate with other human beings.
Furthermore, English is already being used for more than a half of people in the world. So it is easy for us to have and to increase our knowledge by reading books, watching news, learning something by mastering or having knowledge of English as well. English is very important for us to learn from the first time.
that the children experience when they take in the fresh air, and watch the butterfly tends gently on a flower is measurable. In out door the children can do many activities such as running, jumping, climbing and playing out door. The time children spend out door every day is just many ways to enrich the objective of the course and support children’s development and acquisition.
Usually students in first year still have limited vocabulary, because they get difficulties to memorize the meaning, particularly focusing on the study of pronunciation of English words. From the result of the interview with the English teacher and the student of children, it is found that the limited vocabulary is their problem in learning English. It is difficult for them to remember the meaning and the pronunciation the words. They are also not interested in studying English because they feel bored with the teacher’s technique. Usually, the teacher taught vocabulary just in the class directly. The teacher does not combine the technique with other technique, such as songs, games, or story. Hence, the students feel bored and difficult to memorize the words. Based on the phenomenon above, the researcher and the English teacher of in SDN 2 Teguhan Ngawi try to find the effective solution to increase the vocabulary mastery by using out door activities.
still use traditional method to teach vocabulary. Teachers just ask the student to memorize some words with their equivalent in the student native language. Many different techniques had been implemented to teach word effectively. One of the good techniques is Repeated Exposure to Words technique. In the school of SDN 2 Teguhan Ngawi that the writer observed the students’ activity and the teacher used the repeated exposure to words technique in the teaching learning process. And the students predict the picture using English language. Therefore, the students can be motivated to learn English, particularly the vocabulary.
Although children seem to learn new words quickly they will also forget quickly too. So it is important to give them practice to help their memory. However, the English teacher must help the student especially in teaching vocabulary. The teacher can give many interesting ways to learn. In this case the writers want to observe the implementation of teaching vocabulary using repeated exposure to words technique in SDN 2 TEGUHAN NGAWI.
B. Problem Statement
Based on the background of the study the writer formulates the problem statement as follows:
1. What teaching technique is applied by the teacher in teaching vocabulary to the first year students of SDN 2 TEGUHAN NGAWI?
2. What are the problems faced by the teacher in teaching vocabulary using the technique at the first year students of SDN 2 TEGUHAN NGAWI? 3. What the technique is the most appropriate applied by the teacher in SDN
2 TEGUHAN NGAWI?
C. Limitation of the Study
There are many problems in language teaching learning and the problem can never be overcome completely, although many attempts have been done to solve them. The writer is aware that it is impossible for her to cope with all of problems of English teaching learning because of her limited capability and knowledge.
According to the problem statements, the writer would like to limit the study as follows:
1. The subject of the study is limited to the teacher and the first year students of SDN 2 TEGUHAN NGAWI.
D. Objective of the Study
Based on the research problems above, the writer has the following objective.
1. To describe the implementation technique of teaching English Vocabulary to the first year students of SDN 2 TEGUHAN NGAWI.
2. To know the problems faced by the teacher in teaching Vocabulary using the technique at the first year students of SDN 2 TEGUHAN NGAWI. 3. To know the most appropriate technique applied in the first year students
of SDN 2 TEGUHAN NGAWI.
E. Benefits of the Study
This research is expected to be able to give a contribution to the educational world, especially for the English teachers of elementary school, when the study has been completed. It is expected to have two theoretical benefits practical and practical benefits.
1. Theoretical Benefits
a. The results of the research can be used as the reference for those who want to conduct a research in teaching English vocabulary. b.The result of research can be useful for English teachers in their
teaching English vocabulary. 2. Practical Benefits
b.It can motivate the students to read English in their daily life. F. Research Paper Organization
The writer organizes this research paper in order to make easier to understand. The writer divides this research paper into five chapters.
Chapter I is introduction that consists of background of the study, previous study, problem of the study, problem statement, limitation of the study, and research paper organization.
Chapter II is review of related literature that presents previous study, vocabulary, characteristics of young children.
Chapter III is research method that consists of type of research of the study, object of the study, method of collecting data, technique of analyzing data.
Chapter IV consists of two parts namely: research finding and discussion.
