avidBoothgrewupinabjectpoverty inMorecambe,intheNorthWestof Englandashisfamilystruggledtofeed threechildren.Throughsheergritandhard work,Davidmanagedtogetauniversityeduca-tionandgraduatedasacivilengineer.HeworkedforUnitedKingdom’sbig-gestconstructioncompany,Tarmacandwas theyoungestcivilengineeratage23,tobe sentoverseastoSharjah,intheUnitedArab Emirates.Heaccomplishedhistaskswelland atage25,wasagaintheyoungestproject managerinNigeriatorunoneofthelargest projects,the150-mileBamatoLittleGombe RoadprojectinnortheastNigeria.
Davidinitiatedtransparentaccountingsys-tems,withnocomputers,andensuredthat allofthepeopleworkingontheproject(over 1,000Nigeriansandupto10expatriates) knewthathewouldnottolerateanykindof corruption.Herecalled:“Itwasverydifficultin acountrythatwasknownasthemost
corruptintheworldatthattime!Isucceeded
largelybecauseItreateverybodyasanequal andrealisedthatmysuccesswouldonlycome ifallofthepeoplebelowmewerecorrectly trained,knewthevalueoftheirwork,werenot overworkedandenjoyedtheirjob.Ialsoiniti-atedthefirsteversicknessbenefitsforworkers’ wivesandchildrensotheycouldfocusontheir work.Inthebush,thatwasnoteasy!”
Nearly Killed
Ittakesabravemantostanduptocorruption andDavidnearlylosthislifeasprojectmanager ofaNigerian-ownedconstructioncompany whenheinstitutedsystemstoeradicatecorrup-tionthere.
“Thekeyringleaderofthecorruptactivi-tiesbrokeruleshehadsignedtoandwas terminated.Whenhecametocollecthisfinal wagesandbonusetc,heandanotherrecently firedcorruptemployeetriedtokillme.I escapedwithabrokennoseandsixbroken ribs.Iwasrescuedbymysecuritymanwhom
Ihadbroughtalongwithmefromtheprevi-ouscompany–andwhomtheydistractedtill hefinallyheardmycriesforhelp.Idoknow whatitisliketoseeyourlifepassinginfront ofyouinthatsplitsecondwhenyouthinkyou aregoingtodiefrombeingkickedtodeath,” hesaid.
Bytheearlyageof34yearsold,Davidhad achievedgreatsuccessasacivilengineer.He hadmadeareputationforhimselfforgetting thingsdoneagainstalloddsworkingoncom-plexconstructionprojectsinplacessuchasthe UnitedKingdom,Nigeria,Trinidad,Indonesia andPapuaNewGuinea.
Byhisownadmission,Daviddrewa“ridic- ulouslyhighsalarywhicheventuallyembar-rassedme!Ihadchangedandreallydidnot likewhoIhadbecome.”Henolongerhadany “innersatisfaction”fromhisjobandneeded tofilla“massivevoid”inhislifeattheendof eachday.
The “Poor” Rich
Thisbeganaperiodofintensesoulsearching. “BythetimeIwas40,aftersixyearsponder-ingmylifeandlookingatbothsidesofthe coin,Ipreferredbeinga“normalperson”again –butdidn’tneedtostrugglelikemyparents andextendedfamilybecauseIknewmyskills, initiativeandexperiencewouldcarryme throughlife.IrealisedIstilldidnotfeelcom-fortableinthepresenceofwealthypeoplewho didnotknowpoverty.”
Hespeakswithatingeofbitternessofan “ex-friend”whosuddenlystoppedcommu-nicatingwithhimwhenDavidnolongerhad thebigmoney,flashycarorwenttoexpensive restaurants.“WhenIgothimaloneonedayin 1988andaskedhim,“HaveIdonesomething wrongtoyou?Youdon’tseemtowanttocon-tactmeanymore.”
“OhwellDavid,”hesaidwithasniggeron hislips,“youusedtoberich...”wasasmuch asIlethimsay.Ithankedhimverymuchand satisfiedmyselfthatIdidnotneedfriendswho werefriends“becauseIhadmoney”.Imoved toIndonesiashortlyafterandstartedlifeasa qualifiedEnglishteacherinJakartainNovember 1989onUS$200/month.Sheerbliss!Thehappi-estfouryearsofmylifeatthattime.”
Why Indonesia?
“IchoseIndonesiaasaplacetolivefortherest ofmylifein1989.In1986whenIwasdoing consultancyworkfortheIndonesianEmbassy inLondon,Ihadalreadydecidedthatwhenthe timewasrightforme,Iwantedtodedicatemy lifetohelpingalleviatepovertyinthecountry
ofmychoice.IchoseIndonesiatomovetofor therestofmylifebecauseIfeltmostcomfort-ablewiththepeople,andfrommyexperience ofworkinginsevencountriesandtravelling toafurther35,Indonesianswerethewarmest andmostpeace-lovingpeopleIhadmetinmy life.IlikedthenatureoftheIndonesianpeo-pleandwasnotpreparedtoliveinacountry whereviolencewasrife.Ihadseenenough inmylife,especiallyinNigeria,Trinidadand PapuaNewGuinea.”
Daviddecidedhewantedtosettledown andplantherestofhislife.Hemovedfrom JakartatoBaliinlate1993andinearly1994, hishearttoldhimthetimewasrighttostart puttinghislife’sexperiencetogooduse.
Hesaid:“Iwantedmylifetohavea‘real’ value–notmeasuredbymoney,butbydeeds. Myquesttofindthemostdisadvantaged placeinIndonesiastartedinFebruary1994.
I wanted my life to have a ‘real’
