Abstract
Active learning has been used nowadays in all areas of language learning to make the students
actively participate in the learning process. However, research which presented the use of active
learning techniques in teaching grammar is very few. Thus, this study focused on the application
of popular active learning techniques that are used in teaching grammar for Senior High School
students. The participants were two teachers from SMA Negeri 1, two teachers from Satya
Wacana High School, and one teacher from SMA Negeri 3. Through the observations and
interviews the researcher found that there were five active learning techniques that are used in
teaching grammar. They were questioning purposefully, pair or small group, games, role play,
and English songs. These active learning techniques were related one another and cannot be used
alone in class activities. The teachers usually combined two or three techniques at the same
meetings to encourage the students’ participation in classroom activities.
