THE ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE

• An ornamental plant is a

plant

that is grown

for its ornamental qualities, rather than for its

commercial or other value. The term is often

abbreviated to ornamental (usually as a noun)

when used in horticultural contexts.

THE ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE

• Ornamental horticulture consists of

floriculture and landscape horticulture. Each

is concerned with growing and marketing

plants and with the associated activities of

flower arrangement and landscape design.

The turf industry is also considered a part of

ornamental horticulture...

• Quite simply, ornamental horticulture is the

art and science of the cultivation of garden

plants for ornamental purposes.

• It is a discipline that encompasses all of the

different aspects of finding, growing and

selling plants. And think of all the plant groups

out there, from trees to cut flowers,

horticulture covers it all.

• It also encompasses design and landscape

construction specialists, soil and turf

professionals, insect and plant health

specialists, groundskeepers and savvy

business people.

• It is an art because there is a great deal of

creativity involved in many aspects of

horticulture.

• It is a science because there is a great deal of

knowledge and technology involved in so many

aspects of the business. Tissue culture labs,

hybridizers and taxonomists, for instance, all rely

on science

• Landscape or floral design may be the obvious

vocational choices, but there are also

photographers, writers, botanical artists and

illustrators and the numerous ways plants are

marketed.
