PALM OIL MILLS

1.1 LAYOUT OF POWER GENERATORS, MAIN SWITCHBOARD, MOTOR

CONTROL PANELS AND POWER CABLES

Power Supply System In Palm Oil Mill

(9)

Different Parts of Power System

(a) Generating Sets

Comprising Steam, Diesel and Gas Types (Sinar Mas is considering installing

Biogas Engine)

(b) Main Cables

Linking Generating Sets and Main Switchboard. Commonly used are

PVC/PVC Single Core Copper Conductors. Due to flexibility.

(c) Main Switchboard

Comprising Generator Control Boards, Outgoing Distribution Panels,

Switching Panels and Capacitor Boards.

(d) Sub-Main Cables

Linking Main Switchboards and Sub-Switchboards. Commonly used are 4

Core Armoured Cable or 4 Core Paper Insulated Lead Alloy Sheathed Cable.

(e) Sub-Switchboard

Another name is Motor Control Panel. Starter Boards are located here.

(f) Loads

Comprising Electric Motor, Lighting, Heating, Air-Conditioner, Equipment.

1.2 MAIN SWITCHBOARD

1.2.1 MAIN SWITCHBOARD

These are attachment of panels to control power intake from generators

and power flow to load centres under control conditions.

The operations are executed by the use of ACB, MCCB, Protection

Equipment, Metering Equipment, Selector Switches, Change-over

Switches, P.F. Capacitor Banks, Bus-bars, Cables, etc.

The Main Switchboard comprises :

(10)

(b) Loads Control Panel

(c) Change-over Panel

(d) Automatic Power Factor Correction Panel

(e) Synchronising Panel

These panels are fabricated from 10 SWG and 12 SWG Sheet Metals for

Frame Work and Door/Covers respectively. These sheet metals are first

cleansed throughtly, given a phosphate treatment before being painted

with two undercoats of zinc chromate. The panels are then painted with

two layers of enamel orange on the outside and two layers of ‘white’ on

the inside.

1.2.2 GENERATOR CONTROL PANEL

Each generator control panel comprises :

(a) 1 No. 3 Pole ACB c/w under voltage release and auxiliary contacts

(b) 1 No. 3 Phase Magnetic-Thermal Overload Relays

(c) 1 No. Neutral Knife Switch

(d) 1 No. Earth fault Relay

(e) 1 No. Reverse Power Relay

(f) 1 No. 144 mm Square Voltmeter c/w Voltmeter Selector Switch

(g) 3 Nos. 144 mm Square Ammeter

(h) 1 No. 144 mm Square Kilo-watt (KW) meter

(i) 1 No. Kilo-watt Hour (KWh) meter

(j) 1 No. Hour-run meter

(k) 7 Nos. Measurement Current Transformers

(l) 4 Nos. Protection Current Transformers

(m)1 No. 1,5 kilo-ohm 3 Watts Voltage Trimmer

(11)

(o) 1 No. 144 mm Square Power Factor Meter

(p) 1 No. Reed Type Frequency Meter

(q) 10 Nos. 20/6A Control Fuse and Fuse Link

(r) Key Interlock Switch (if required)

(s) Tinned Copper Bus-bars and cabling

1.2.3 LOADS CONTROL PANEL

Power flow from these panels are control by :

(a) Moulded Case Circuit Breaker (MCCB)

(b) No Fuse Breaker (NFB)

(c) Fuse Switch (F/S)

(d) Switch Fuse (S/F)

(e) Socket Outlet

The advantages of MCCB or NFS over F/S and S/F are :

(a) No change of fuse is necessary

(b) Re-set when trigger by overload

(c) Small and compact

(d) Large ratings can be manufactured

Standard Ratings of TPN MCCB are :

(a) 30 A

(12)

(h) 1000 A

(i) 1250 A

1.2.4 CHANGE-OVER PANEL

(a) This can also be called Switching Panel.

(b) This is done by the use of 4 Pole Change-Over Switch and Main Switch

(ACB, MCCB, F/S).

(c) The purpose is to tap power supply from ‘Steam Bus-Bars’ OR ‘Diesel

Bus-Bars’.

(d) The advantage of this type of design is FLEXIBILITY IN OPERATIONS.

(e) At timers KEY INTERLOCK is provided to prevent mal-operation.

1.2.5 AUTOMATIC POWER FACTOR CORRECTION PANEL

(a) This comprises :

 Main Switch (to protect system)

 AC Contractor (to provide switching of capacitor Bank)

 Power Fuse (to protect capacitor bank)

 Electronic Power Factor Regulator (P.F. Controller)

 Measurement Current Transformer (to sense reactive power)

 Ammeter (measure amperes)

 Indicating Lights (to show no. of steps being switched on)

(b) Electronic Power Factor Regulator is normally available in steps of 6

and 12.

6-steps Regulator provide switching up to 6 capacitor banks.

12-step Regulator provide switching up to 12 capacitor banks.

(c) Measurement Current Transformer should be installed at location

(13)

correction of all inductive reactive load.

(d) The time response setting of Power Factor Regulator =

(e) Example : System has 6 x 65 KVAr Capacitor Banks Measurement

Current Transformer use 2000/5A.

Thus Time Response Setting =

=

=

= 0.1625

1.2.6 SYNCHRONISING PANEL

(a) This consists of :

 Synchronoscope (indicate phase sequence)

 Double Voltmeter (indicate bus-bar and incoming set voltage)

 Double Frequency (indicate bus-bar and incoming set

frequency)

 Selector Switch (to select gen-set to be paralleled)

 Synchronising Light (indicate phase sequence)

 Instrument Fuse (to protect meter and equipment)

(b) Synchronising Panel is require to assist in paralleling of generating

sets.

(c) Paralleling is done at the instance of :

 Equality is voltage

 Equality in frequency

 Equality in phase sequence

(14)

(d) Paralleling of generating sets than the above conditions can cause

serious damage to generators, switchgears and meters due to large

circulating current.
