Established in 1932, the Singapore Manufacturers’ Federation, (SMa) is the national body that represents the manufacturing community in Singapore . SMa is one of Singapore ‘s Leading Business Association with a corporate membership base of over 2,800 SMEs and MNCs and representation in 12 industry groups across Singapore. SMa is a Not For Profit Organization governed by an elected council comprising of 32 highly respected individuals in the manufacturing community, many of which are captains of the industry.

INTRODUCTION
Specialist Diploma in Psychology aims to give you an understanding of why humans behave as they do; why they differ from one another; and how they are affected by living and working together. It also equips you with basic skills in analyzing, understanding, researching, changing, and evaluating human behaviour as well as exploring the interaction between people and their physical and social environments.
Students will cover both the business and counseling aspects of psychology. As the level of stress for working executives’ increases along with the standard of living, there is an increasing demand for professionals in these areas.
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this programme, participants will be able to:

Psychology around Us is concerned with the interaction between the fields of Psychology, Biology and Cognition. It involves the study of behaviour in terms of physiology, genetics, evolution and cognitive processes. Cognition, or mental activity, involves the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of
knowledge. The range of mental processes involved includes perception, attention, memory, imagery, language and thinking. Research examples will be drawn not only from traditional experimental cognitive psychology but also from cognitive science, cognitive neuropsychology, and cognitive neuroscience.
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT FROM A PSYCHOLOGIST’S PERSPECTIVE
This module aims to create an understanding of key themes in developmental psychology from biological beginnings through to adulthood with reference to the development of cognition, emotion and social interaction, the ability to critically evaluate theories and evidence relating to human development and an appreciation of the interrelatedness of the different facets of human development.
CRITICAL THINKING IN PSYCHOLOGICAL CONTEXT
Students will understand the basic principles of social
constructionism, and be able to relate these to the psychology of social interaction, identity, personality and experience. Theoretical ideas and practical applications emerging from recent developments in discursive psychology, cultural
psychology and narrative psychology will be discussed further in this module.
PSYCHOLOGY: STATISTICS & RESEARCH METHODS
Psychology: Statistics and Research Methods is concerned with the assessment and evaluation of human from a psychologist’s perspective. The issues to be covered will focus on both formal and informal methods of assessment, with particular attention being paid to standardized assessment, observational methods, curriculum-based and performance-based assessment. The application of principles of assessment to education will be clearly addressed.
CRISIS STRESS MANAGEMENT
Crisis Stress Management involves understanding the stress process, assessments of stress and the application of
psychological intervention strategies to effective performance in physical activity and other various settings. The students will experience diverse intervention strategies and discuss their effectiveness on peak performance.
SELF AWARENESS AND GROUP DYNAMICS
Self Awareness and Group Dynamics introduces and appraises some of the major perspectives in the study of personality. The module will undertake a broad-based review of different approaches and applications within the field of personality. A particularly important feature of the module will be the bringing together of traditional, alternative and contextually based perspectives. The structure of the module is designed so as to maximize students’ active engagement with the material covered. Extension into group dynamics will be discussed within the self concept.
COUNSELLING & COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Counselling and Communication Skills will be taught in a series of lectures that emphasis the theoretical basis of counselling psychology. Coursework will involve writing up some of these workshops. These workshops offer a wide range of practical exercises to enable students to experience the core conditions and skills of counselling, examine some cases of
counselling in action, and the
professional and practical issues raised by counselling practice.

The entire programme fee is payable in 2 equal installments listed below:

(Payable 4 months after start of course)

*Programme fees are subjected to prevailing GST and one-time application fee of $20.

• General public who wishes to gain a better and indepth understanding on human behavior
• Individuals who wishes to upgrade themselves and pursue an undergraduate programme in Psychology
COURSE STRUCTURE
The entire programme may be completed over a 10-month period. Up to 2 modules may be taught per semester where the duration of each semester is 2.5 months. All taught modules are examinable by coursework and a final examination. Examinations are conducted at the end of each semester.
COURSE DELIVERY
Classes meet at least twice a week for 3 hours per session.
Lectures are scheduled on weekdays evenings, 7pm to 10pm. The teaching method would be skill-oriented and competency-based training in the form of interactive classrooms lectures, case study analyses, presentations, problem-solving exercises and projects that emphasize on applications and team work.
METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
All modules will be assessed through a combination of course work and examinations depending on the individual module’s objectives. The proportion of marks attributed to coursework and final examination is at the discrete of individual lecturers’ analyses and varies according to different modules.

• GCE ‘O’ levels / GCE ‘A’ levels • NTC / ITC holders
• Professional Certificates from recognized institutions • Mature Candidates with at least 2 years working experience
ADMINISTRATIVE
PROCEDURES
WITHDRAWAL AND DEFERMENT
All notice of withdrawal must be in writing. A full refund of the course fee paid will be made if notice of withdrawal is received within 60 days prior to commencement of the course. If notice of withdrawal is received within 2 weeks prior to the commencement of the course, an administrative fee of 50% of the fees paid will be levied. No refund will be made after the course has commenced. Course fee paid will not be refunded in the event of deferment
