Abstract

Vocabulary is an essential component of any language, and it is the core of communication. In my experience learning vocabulary was not easy. I need some strategies that could make the vocabulary learning effective. Therefore, I am interesting in doing a study that investigates the strategies used by the students in SMA N 1 Salatiga grade X. This study used quantitative as well as qualitative method. I used a questionnaire that was distributed to 62 students in SMA N 1 Salatiga grade X, and I interviewed 9 students to get more information. The finding shows that the students used 2 kinds of vocabulary learning strategies. They are meta-cognitive and cognitive strategies. In addition, self-initiation strategy that is specific strategy of meta-cognitive strategies and using sources strategy that is specific strategy of cognitive strategies appeared as the most frequent strategies. It is expected that the result of the study could be useful for the teachers in ELT field to conduct the effective class based on the strategies used by the students.
