PASTOR’S COLUMN !
!ADVENT!
We have just finished observing four weeks of Advent (actually three weeks and a few hours.) Sunday after Sunday the Advent wreath in our church sanctuary became more complete and even brighter. We put off Christmas hymns for our worship during this time and sang Advent hymns like “My Soul in Stillness Waits”
and “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” Hymns of hope and longing, hymns that haunt us and halt us, hymns that stir us and cause us to be still. This is the mark, the quality and character of Advent. However, this season offers so much more.
Reflect on the readings from Sunday to Sunday and even day after day and you will find an Advent that helps us focus on an ancient promise foretold by Prophet Isaiah. A promise about restoration and revolution. God will come to restore God’s own people and a revolution of turning all things around and upside down will commence. John the Baptist longed for this restoration and revolution to happen, and he symbolically started it by washing clean the many who came to him at the Jordan River. A promise spoken was being fulfilled in John’s day and age. He prayed for it, he prepared for it, he propelled it into motion. Today, Advent is more than what it seems. Advent is more than just Advent candles and Advent hymns. Advent is about us hoping to be restored come Christmas. Advent is about us longing for revolution in our day. It is about promises spoken to us in these four weeks to come to fulfillment in our lives over the course of the next several weeks of the Christmas Season. What was God’s overall promise given to you during this time?
CHRISTMAS!
We now enter into Christmas Day, actually, we do this over the course of the next eight days. This leads into the Christmas Season till Monday, January 8, which is the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. This is a time when manger scenes are put in place, trees are lit up, and family time happens in some form. However, there’s more. Christmas is not just about a historical birth, Christmas is about God being in!the!flesh now. It is a season of God, not only being near us, but God invading our personal space. It’s a season of God moving into our homes and into our hearts. Christmas is about God made real in our lives. We celebrate our God’s reality at this time even more so. As Catholics we celebrate God’s reality every Sunday throughout the year, as God in Jesus is made real in simple gifts of bread and wine. If you look at and hear and read the scripture readings of Christmas throughout this season, there are many connections to the Mass we celebrate.
Those connections can help us to be even more so connected to the realness of God in the reality of our lives today. Christmas is more then what it seems. Why would the Divine become human? Why would God become a person? Why? For our salvation, sure. God did this also because God cares … God loves, the world and us. The promise spoken in Advent is that this care would be forever and this love would be enduring. In this Christmas time how will you look for God to bring to fulfillment and completion the promises spoken to you?
Peace in this time from Advent into Christmas,
Fr. Tom

PSR NEWS!
Featured Class: The 5th grade PSR class on Monday evenings has had a great first semester! We began the year talking about Jesus’ mission and the different ways Jesus might use social media today to spread His message of hope, love and peace.
We also focused the Blessed Mother and how her “Yes” made our salvation possible. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s appearance to the three shepherd children of Fatima, the students designed holy cards depicting Mary’s appearances at Fatima and created their own one!decade rosaries. We began learning about the Sacraments, our main focus this year. Starting with Baptism, the class designed their own baptismal banners and learned about their baptismal promises. When discussing Reconciliation, the students made lap books to guide them on the path to a good confession. The class also talked about the different liturgical seasons and worked together in creating our own liturgical calendar.
Thank you to Lynne Fischer and Jeannette Schultz for serving as the teachers for this class!
PSR Class Schedule: All PSR families are asked to review the PSR schedule for the next few weeks:

CHRISTMAS GIFT: A GOOD READ !
If you remember, last year we distributed a book call Living the Mass at all of the Masses on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This year, through a generous donor, we were able to purchase another book in order to evangelize and develop additional faith formation. The book is entitled, Positively Catholic: 25 Really Good Reasons to Love the Faith, Live the Faith, and Share the Faith. I hope you enjoy it. When you are done, pass it on to someone in your life who may need it neighbor, child off to college, family member not practicing the faith, or just someone interested in wanting to know more. The book is given away to you to enjoy but it is also meant to be passed on to others for their enlightenment as well.

Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, ! in a one bedroom house made of plaster and stone. ! I had come down the chimney with presents to give, !
and to see just who in this home did live. ! I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, !
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree. !
!
No stocking by mantle, just boots filled with sand, ! and on the wall pictures of far distant lands. ! With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, !
a sobering thought came to my mind. !
For this house was different, so dark and so dreary, ! the home of a soldier, now I could see clearly. !
!
The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, ! curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home. ! The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, !
not how I pictured a United States soldier. ! Was this the hero of whom I’d just read? ! Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed? !
!
I realized the families that I saw this night, !
owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight. ! Soon round the world, the children would play, ! and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day. !
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, ! because of the soldiers, like the one lying here. !
!
I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone, ! on a cold Christmas eve in a land far from home. !
The very thought brought a tear to my eye, ! I dropped to my knees and started to cry. !
!
The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, !
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice; ! I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more, ! my life is my God, my country, my corps.” ! The soldier rolled over and soon drifted to sleep, !
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep. ! I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, ! and we both shivered from the cold evening’s chill. !
!
I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark, night, ! this guardian of honor so willing to fight. !
Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, ! whispered, “Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas day, all is secure.” !
One look at my watch, and I knew he was right. !
“Merry Christmas my friend, and to all a good night.” !
