Background of the Study: Literature represents a language or people who relates to human’s culture and tradition. The literary works itself can be expressed through its genres such as: poem, novel, film, drama and etc. It depends on the people how they want to express it and analyze it. Here the writer wants to try to analyze one of the literary works mentioned above, a

drama. The drama is Uncle Vanya written by Anton Chekhov.

Uncle Vanya is a play by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. It was

first published in 1897 and received its Moscow première in 1899 in a production by the Moscow Art Theatre, under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavski. Uncle Vanya is a story about a man who has wasted his life toiling on the estate of his brother-in-law, Serebryakov. He is consumed with his lost life and obsessed to Helena. Then, Vanya becomes a lazy man since Serebryakov and his wife came to the estate. He just imagined his love and his wasted life every day. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the old Black Seaport of Taganrog on January, 17.1860. He was a Russian short-story writer, playwright and physician, considered to be one of the greatest short-story writers in the history of world literature. His career as a dramatist produced four classics and his best short stories are held in high esteem by writers and critics. Chekhov practiced as a doctor throughout most of his literary career. His first story appeared in Moscow paper in 1880. In 1884, he took his degree as doctor of medicine and decided to practice, although his writing had by now taken on a professional character. His play are, The Sea Gull (1897), Ivanoff (1887), The Swan Song (1888), The Boor (1888), The Demon (1888), The

Three Sisters (1901), Uncle Vanya (1899), and last play The Cherry Orchard (1904). Besides, Chekhov also wrote short stories. His first collection of stories

appeared in 1887. He was dead on 1904 because of heart attack in Baden Wieler, Germany. He was buried in the cemetery of the Novodeviche Monastery in Moscow. Uncle Vanya story is very interesting to analyze. There are some aspects that make this story very interesting to analyze. The first is Uncle Vanya play is unique among Chekhov’s major plays because it is

essentially an extensive reworking of his own play published a decade earlier, The Wood Demon. Second, because the play had previous small runs in

provincial theatres in 1898, its metropolitan premiere took place on 7 November 1899 1t the Moscow Art Theatre. The writer will propose a single problem statement in this research. Based on the explanation above, the writer is interested in analyzing the major character, Uncle Vanya, because he has a

very important role in the story, and gives information about psychological phenomenon.

The writer will analyze the Uncle Vanya drama by using social psychological theory. So the writer gives the title of this research “COMPULSIVE DRIVES OF UNCLE VANYA ON KEEPING THE TRUST IN CHEKHOV’S UNCLE VANYA DRAMA (1896): A SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGICAL APPROACH”.

Problem Statement of the research is how the compulsive drives of

Uncle Vanya on Keeping the Trust is reflected in Uncle Vanya drama.

Limitation of the Study is limited to the compulsive drives of Uncle

Vanya and how the compulsive drives influence his personality development in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya drama. This study uses social psychological approach. Objective of the Study is to analyze the play based on its structural

elements and to analyze the play based on social psychological approach. Literary Review based on researcher’s observation, in Sebelas Maret University and Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, researcher found that no one has conducted a research on “Compulsive Drives of Uncle Vanya on Keeping the Trust in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya Drama (1896)” using a social psychological approach.

2. Research Method

In this research, the object of the study is Uncle Vanya (Ivan Voynitsky). method, this research is aimed to describe the compulsive drives of Uncle Vanya on keeping the trust in Uncle Vanya drama based on social psychological perspective.

The data of the research will be classified into two categories, primary data and secondary data. The primary data is the text of Anton Chekhov’s drama “Uncle Vanya” translated by Marian Fell. It was originally published in 1916 by Charles Scribner's Sons. The secondary data are taken from other sources related to primary data such as references from internet related to Uncle Vanya drama.

To collect the data, the writer uses the documentation method. First, the writer reads and observes “Uncle Vanya” text play. Second, the writer looks for the data and writes the data based on its classification. Third, the writer selects the data.

3. Social Psychology Theory a. Notion of Social Psychology

The social psychology theory is proposed by Karen Horney. It was built on the assumption that social and cultural conditions, especially childhood experiences are largely responsible for shaping personality.

b. Basic Priciples of Social Psychology 1) Basic Anxiety

Basic anxiety is feeling of isolation and helplessness resulting from inadequate parenting in infancy (Cloninger, 2009: 155).

2) Basic Hostility

Basic hostility, a derivative of anger, which is the predisposition to anticipate harm from others and thus to distrust them. Together, anxiety and hostility lead people to believe that they must always be on guard to protect their security (Hall and Lindzey, 1985: 158)

3) Compulsive Drives

Compulsive drives is a defensive strategy to cope with the feelings of insecurity, helplessness, and hostility that accompany basic anxiety.

(7)

| N E F I A R R E Z A A L A V I 4) Attempts at Coping

The neurotic trends developed from basic anxiety, which in turn, stems from a person’s relationship with others. To cope with basic anxiety, people develop several strategies.

4. Research Finding

The analysis of major character’s personality, such as basic anxiety, basic hostility, compulsive drives and attempts at coping above shows that each classification of them gives an important element in building the major character’s mental condition. In this discussion of analysis the researcher tries to relate one element to the other. Chekhov gives attention in the personality elements, especially in Voynitsky as the major character in this play. He faces his basic anxiety that appears in beginning of the story. His basic anxiety appears when he feels uncomfortable with Serebryakov’s existence, it makes him become anxious because Serebryakov will take over the estate, besides his mother, Voynitskaya is really like and trust to Serebryakov. Here, his anxiety is increase. He is afraid if he loses his mother’s attention and belief.

The basic anxiety and basic hostility of Voynitsky are arise together. His basic hostility comes up when Serebryakov does not fill his desire to keep and manage the estate, moreover he wants to sell the estate and the profit will be used to buy a summer cottage. He is contradicting Serebryakov’s plan. He shows his contradiction as the climax of his basic hostility. To cope with the feelings of insecurity, helplessness, and hostility that accompany basic anxiety, Voynitsky develops compulsive drives, which contains of neurotic needs and neurotic trends as a defensive strategy. First, he needs for affection because he seldom gets affection from his mother and other people. Second, he needs a partner in everything especially in his life, he tries to get Helena’s love, and he wants Helena to be his wife and to be partner to share his life. He thinks that if he marries Helena, his envy will be gone. Third, he needs to restrict his life, he feels that he can do everything without anyone helps and he does not want to depend on other people. He feels confident with his ability. Voynitsky also needs power, to defend his sister’s estate. Voynitsky is underestimate with a

| N E F I A R R E Z A A L A V I

loyalty, he considers that loyalty is irrational thing. Then, he will take the advantage of Helena’s existence to control himself and to make him peace with Serebryakov. It shows that he needs to exploit someone as the fifth defensive strategy. His need for social recognition becomes the sixth defensive strategy. Voynitsky wants everyone in the estate to confess his existence and his effort to keep and manage the estate, he wishes that everyone can understand him. Seventh, he needs for personal admiration, he wants to be regarded as the important person, he expects that his effort will be valued and he fears for being meaningless. Then, Voynitsky also develops the eighth defensive strategy, it is need for personal achievement. Here, Voynitsky wants to be number one in everything, he wants to be winner in all situations but the fact is Voynitsky has wasted his life so he cannot realize it. The ninth of his need is need for self sufficiency, here, Helena and Telegin give advice to him to make peace with Serebryakov immediately, but Voynitsky refuses it because he feels that Serebryakov has wrecked his life. The last is that he needs for perfection, he tries to be patient like an angel to look perfect in front of Helena. His needs make him try to come closer with Helena, resist to Serebryakov and move away from others. Voynitsky creates and strives to actualize an idealized self-image by attaining perfection, or glory. It happens when he feels dissatisfied with his small salary that is not balanced with his work. Then, he develops a pride system to support the idealized image, it occurs when he makes clear to everybody in the estate that he has struggled to keep and manage the estate, he require him to liberate himself and his mother from anything which relates to Serebryakov. He tries to disown, or externalize, things in himself with which

they cannot cope. All these efforts produce alienation from self, a condition that has made him as other people.

5. Conclusion

Based on the structural and social psychology analysis, the writer concludes that Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya is a very interesting drama to be studied. It contains life story and interest on psychology, which is manifested

in his psychological analysis of the characters. Uncle Vanya tells about the man named Ivan Voynitsky who has wasted his life in toil in the estate.

As human being he tends to have a problem in his life. It motivates him to solve the problem. The problem causes other problems, influencing his mental condition. His problem of life causes a depression. His anxiety and hostility come up together as the effect of his envy with Serebryakov. It has developed his needs and his trends. Voynitsky’s needs and trends lead him to struggle for what he wants. His drive takes him to contradict his brother-in-law to not sell his sister estate and to admit him to keep and manage the estate. Then, he develops the idealized self-image by attaining perfection to make him looks better. He has a set of demands that make him explains to everybody in the estate that for twenty years he has struggled for manage the estate and require to liberate himself and his mother from anything which relates to Serebryakov.
