Kate Hood's clear and gentle voice is ideal for narrating the journey of Simone Fleurier. Belinda Alexandra's heroine becomes the listener's personal guide through a tumultuous slice of place and history, provincial and urban France before and during WWII. Besides giving Simone the authentic tone of a maturing young woman, Hood also provides believable voices for male characters, ranging from the gruff uncle to the urbane AndrÉ. The descriptions of the Provenal countryside are as compelling as the details of the European music halls, where Simone rises to fame. This twenty-hour romantic escape is conveniently presented on two CDs, although an MP3-compatible player is required. R.F. AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Great story, recently I had the chance to go to Paris and marseille, this story centers on a girl growing up around marseille and leaving the countryside to have a career in Paris. It gave great insight into these beautiful places. Well worth a read.

By C Gilmour
This is a lengthy novel with a complex plot; at the same time it is eminently readable and very interesting. Simone is a talented music hall singer and dancer in pre-war Paris. The first part of the book deals with her early career in Marseilles; the second part is set in Paris and Simone's success there. She is a very attractive character with a keen moral sense. The story is told in such a way that the author describes her character, development and values without moralising. The story moves along and the reader is caught up in the successes and reversals of the singer's career. Part 3 brings the reader to wartime Paris where Simone stays and becomes involved in the resistance. The details of the Nazi occupation in Paris and the rest of France are told through the eyes of Simone and her Lavender- farming family who become part of the Resistance and pay the price. The role of de Gaulle, and that of the Vichy French government are woven into the story in a clever and realistic way. There is also a love story woven into the terrible events through which Simone lives; it has a happy ending.
The style is very readable and the plot is satisfying. The characters are well drawn and the reader can identify with them in their ups and downs.
I enjoyed this book immensely and would recommend it to any reader who is looking for an exciting moral tale
