entitled “Types and Meaning of Idiomatic Expressions with Reference to Lyles’s
Love Off-Limits” is submitted to fulfill one of the requirements in accomplishing
the S-1 Degree at English Department, Faculty of Arts, Udayana University.

ABSTRACT
This study entitled “Types and Meaning of Idiomatic Expressions with Reference to Lyles’s Love-Off Limits” is aimed at answering two questions: What types of idioms found in the novel Love Off-Limits and types of the idiom meaning in the novel Love Off-Limits.
The data in this research was taken from the novel entitled Love Off – Limits. The data was read carefully, noted and then classified as well to find the idiom from parts of the body, color, food, numbers, people, animals, geography, recreation, household items and tools, medicine, plants, clothes, time, the weather, around the house, idiom with the word As, repetition, the word And, That Go Together I and That Go Together II. The data were collected and classified then qualitatively analyzed. The theory of idiom by Seidl and McMordie (1980) is to classify the types of idiom and the theory of meaning by Leech (1974) is to analyze the types of meaning from the idiom. Theory of basic triangle which is written by Ogden and Richard (1976) is applied as the supporting theory to analyze the meaning of the idiom which is analyzed.
The findings show that there are four types of idiomatic expressions and three types of meaning found in the novel. The four types of idiomatic expression namely: particular words with special idiomatic uses, idioms with adjectives and nouns in combination, idioms with prepositions and adverbs, and idioms with common verbs. There are also three types of meaning, namely: conceptual meaning, connotative meaning and stylistic meaning.
