1. PROFILE OF FTUI AND DEPARTMENTS

1. 1. HISTORY OF FTUI

The hi st or y of t he Facul t y of Engi neer i ng, Uni ver si t as Indonesi a (FTUI) began wi t h an of f er made f rom young engineers bel onging t o t he Societ y of Engineers Indonesia (PII), t o the irst President of the Republic Indonesia, Bung Karno, f or t he renovat ions of t he heav-ily damaged main st reet s of Jakart a. At t hat time Jakarta was preparing for the Interna -tional Sports Event, the GANEFO. This bid was welcomed by President Soekarno. The young engineers were granted permission to start t he renovat ions under t he condit ion t hat all work must be completed within two weeks period. Headed by Ir. Bratanata, Ir. Roosseno, Ir. Sutami, and Ir. A.R. Soehoed, the project was completed on time.

After successful accomplishment of the street renovation project, these young engineers with t heir iron will f elt t hat t here was more t hat t hey could do t o serve our count ry. But what ? Then t hey t hought of a brilliant idea: “ Why not est ablish an engineering f acult y in Jakart a as an alt ernat ive t o t he one in Bandung? This way those residing in the country’s capital would not need t o t ravel f ar t o Bandung f or an engi-neering educat ion” .

During t he ceremonial event of Lenso dancing at t he Pembangunan Building (f ormerly known as Pola Building) to welcome the GANEFO guest s of honor, t he young engineers brought t heir idea t o President Soekarno t o which he responded by inviting them to the Presidential Palace t he next day. During t he meet ing in t he President ial Palace, t he President wholeheart -edly approved of the idea and even directly appointed Prof. Ir. Rooseno as the irst Dean of t he Facult y of Engineering. The President also inst ruct ed t hat t he new Facult y of Engineering would be part of the University of Indonesia under the leadership of its Rector, dr. Syarief Thayeb.

The Establishment of Faculty of Engineering UI

Once dr. Syarief Thayeb served as the Minister of Higher Education and Science, he issued Decree No. 76 dated July 17, 1964 regarding t he est ablishment of t he Facult y of Engineering.

Faculty of Engineering was oficially established i n Jakar t a w i t hout any of f i ci al cer emony or cel ebr at i on, under t he banner of t he Universit y of Indonesia as youngest f acul t y. And so t he hist ory of t he Facult y of Engineering Universitas Indonesia began with the irst three Study Programs with their respective Head of Study Programs: Ir. Sutami as Head of Civil Engineering St udy Program, Ir. Ahmad Sayut i as Head of Mechanical Engineering Study Program and Ir. K. Hadinoto as Head of Electrical Engineering St udy Program.

The Metallurgy and Architecture Study Programs were opened the following year with their respective Head of Study Programs: Dr.Ing. Purnomosidhi H. and Ir. Sunaryo S.. Ir. Roosseno as Dean was assisted by Ir. Sutami as Vice Dean f or Academic Af f airs, Ir. Slamet Br at anat a as Vi ce Dean f or Admi ni st r at i on and Finance and Dr. Ing Purnomosidhi H. as Vi ce Dean f or St udent Af f ai r s and Al umni . In its early acitivities in 1964, Faculty of Engineering UI was supported by 30 lecturers and 11 non-academic employees offering a 32 course subject curriculum. The irst class of Faculty of Engineering UI consisted of 199 students. In ive and a half years, 18 of them had successfully completed their study and graduated as certiied Engineers.

In 1985, the study program Gas Engineering (originally under the Metallurgy Study Program) joined the study program Chemical Engineering (originally under the Mechanical Study Program) and formed the Gas and Petrochemical Engineering Study Program with its irst Head of Study Program, Dr. Ir. H. Rachmantio. The Indust r i al Engi neer i ng St udy Pr ogr am, t he youngest St udy Pr ogr am i n Facul t y of Engineering UI, was opened in 1999 with its irst Head of Study Program, Ir. M. Dachyar, M.Sc. The t erm St udy Program was lat er changed t o Department and is still used today.

1. 5. 1. DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL

ENGINEERING

GENERAL

Civil engineering is the oldest engineering disci -pline and encompasses many specialties. Civil engineering can be described as the application of engineering to civil society. Civil engineers apply the principles of engineering to meeting societ y’s f undament al needs f or housing, t rans-portation, sanitation, and the other necessities of a modern society. Civil engineers deal with t he design, const ruct ion, and maint enance of the physical and naturally built environment, incl uding works l ike roads, bridges, canal s, dams, and buildings, as well as ot her challenges such as deteriorating infrastructures, complex environmental issues, outdated transportation syst ems, and nat ural disast ers.

Civil engineering education is to prepare students to be master planners, designers, const ruct ors, and managers of various civil engineering works. The graduat es can work in all levels: in the public sector from municipal t hrough t o nat ional government s, and in t he private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies.

In the initial stage of development, Civil Engi -neering Department – FTUI offered one study program, Civil Engineering, with two majors, which are st ruct ural engineering and wat er re-sources engineering. Following t he demand and development of science and technology, it was then expanded with four additional majors, i.e. transportation engineering, geotechnical engi -neering, sanit ary engineering and const ruct ion management. With the improvement of human resources and f acilit ies, Post graduat e Program for master degree (S2) and doctoral Degree (S3) were open in 1992 and 2001, respectively. In 2006, the Department added more specialized by opening undergraduate program of Environ -ment al Engineering. Previously, Environ-ment al Engineering is one of the majors in Civil Engi -neering. There are eight specializations for Master and Doctoral Program. They are: struc -t ural engineering, geo-t echnical engineering, water resources management, transportation engineering, const ruct ion management , envi-ronmental engineering, project management and inf rast ruct ure management .

The under graduate program of Civil Engineer -ing was accredited internationally in 2001 by The Joint Board of Moderators of the Engineer -ing Council consist of Institution of Structural Engineers (ISE), Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), and Chartered Institution of Building Ser vi ce Engi neer s of t he Uni t ed Ki ngdom. However, due to changes in their policy, re-accreditation could not be proceed. However, t he Program is regularly accredit ed by nat ional accreditation board, BAN-PT (Badan Akreditasi Nasional Pendidikan Tinggi) with score A. Both postgraduate program, Master and Doctor in Civil Engineering, also reach the same score. The undergraduate program of Environmen -t al Engineering was na-t ionally accredi-t ed in 2010. In 2008, undergraduate program of Civil Engineering was assessed by ASEAN University Network – Quality Assurance Program (AUN-QA). The Civil Engineering passed the assess -ment process.
