CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

A. Research Background

English is the most frequently studied foreign language in the world of education in Indonesia, because English is one of the most dominating languages of the world. English has four skills, there are ; speaking, listening, writing, one of them is reading skill. Reading is a process for the reader to get the message that the author wants to convey through the medium of words / writing. Like to discover the implied meaning of a story.

Currently many students and people are lazy to read, it can be said that in Indonesia it is already an emergency to read. In fact, reading can add information to the reader and also avoid misunderstandings in receiving information. That's why the writer wants students to improve reading activities, one of which is through movie scripts to find various information.

Maxom in (Sari, 2018) states that reading is one of the key skills in language. It reinforces the skills students acquire in speaking, listening, and writing. Related to reading, there are 3 types of reading, namely reading silently, reading aloud, reading fast. According to Jain in (Mubarok, 2017) states that reading means to understand the meaning of printed words and it is not only a source of information and a pleasurable activity but also as means of consolidating and extending one’s knowledge of the language.

People use language to build communication with other people, language is also commonly used to express their ideas and felling. One of the ways to share human thought that are real events or fictions is a literary work.

It has a role as media of communication that transferring valuable messages to audiences. It can entertain and inspire everyone.

Literature has become a part of human life. Besides that, they (novels, movie, dramas, poetry) are not only entertainments, but also a means of teaching life philosophy in order to educate the audience. Genres in literature are novels, dramas, poetry and one of the genres in literature is movie. Movies are a type of visual communication which uses moving pictures and sound to tell stories or teach people something. People in every part of the world watch movies as a type of entertainment, a way to have fun. For some people, fun movies can mean movies that make them laugh, while for others it can mean movies that make them cry, or feel afraid (Wikipedia, 2020). Often movies are watched to be entertainment, but the actual function in movie includes informative, educative, and persuasive functions. National movie functions as an educative media to foster young generation in the context of nation and character building.

Movie also has an intrinsic element, both intrinsic elements consist of theme, value, setting, plot, characterization, conflict, dialog. One of things after watching a movie is finding the value conveyed in the story.

There are many values contained in movies, there are social value, educational value, religious value and one of them is moral value. Moral value can be conveyed by the author directly or indirectly. In literary works, moral value can be known from the behavior of the characters or the author’s direct comments through the work. Not all movies have an explicit moral value. To be able to find the implicit meaning in a movie, then it needs to be done an analysis.

The are several reasons why the researcher chooses a literature especially movie entitled “JOKER (2019)”. After analyzing the researcher

can find the Arthur’s characterization, implicit meaning and moral values.

Through this movie the audience can learn about how to deal with problems that exist in life, people can learn how to respect others, this movie tells how everyone create happiness in their lives. This research contains about the portrayal of the Arthur’s character, and implicit meaning, moral values found in the “JOKER (2019)”.

B. Research Focus

This research analysis of the portrayals of Arthur in Joker (2019) limited around the character Joker. Other characters may be presented briefly to support the portrayals of the character Joker. However, they are not to be included as the main focus and also analyze the implicit

meaning and moral value in “JOKER (2019)” movie.

The writer analyzes the implicit meaning and moral value found in this movie. This researcher concerned in implicit meaning and values found which are used reading script and seeing movie.

C. Research Questions

Based on the background above, the research problem can be formulated as follows :

1. How are the characterization of Arthur portrayed in the JOKER movie (2019) ?

2. What are the implicit meaning found in the “JOKER” movie (2019) ? 3. What are the moral value of the “JOKER” movie (2019) ?

D. Research Objective

Based on the research questions , the objectives of the research are presented bellow :

1. To know the portrayals of Arthur characterization in JOKER movie (2019).

2. To describe the implicit meaning in the “JOKER” movie (2019).

3. To find out moral value in “ JOKER” movie (2019).

E. Research Benefit 1. Theoretically

The researcher hopes the result of this study can increase the treasure of topic that related with literature study and this study can contribute to the development to the implicit meaning and moral values taken form “JOKER (2019)” movie.

2. Practically

The result of this study can be used to contribute the development of literary study, particularly among the people who interested in the literary study. For the movie lovers can take the moral values included in the movie. It also can be used as media for people to study about moral value and social value through drama movie.
