Wearable Biomedical Devices using Fabrics
with Patterned Nanomaterials and Others
Abstract
There is an increasing interest in the research world as well as industry on the development of wearable health monitoring. Cotton is one of the most utilised natural textile materials. Cotton is relatively cheap, sustainable, and environmentally friendly. However, its use for advanced devices, e.g. sensing and electronic information conduction, has been hampered by its natural insulating property. Hence, it has been used mostly as wound covering or liquid absorbing material for biomedical applications, utilising its inherent hydrophilicity and hierarchically porous structure. In this presentation, we describe undergoing works in our group and others, on the modifications of cotton fabrics and thread using various nanomaterials coating, to alter cotton’s electronic-, electromechanical- and biochemical-properties. By modifying and tuning its electromechanical properties, new bio-mechanical sensing devices and wearable electronics are developed for health monitoring. We explain the use of various nanomaterials for this modification. Silver Nanoparticles (AgNP), Carbon Nanotube (CNT) and Graphene-PEDOT-PSS were coated and patterned on cotton fabrics or thread to develop various biomedical devices. Proprioception sensor, wearable Electrocardiography (ECG) electrodes and electronics, and pelvic tilt sensor have been developed using this coating and patterning techniques. Currently, we have started the development of Mechanomyography (MMG) for detecting muscles activation upon a particular physical activity, e.g. sit-to-stand movement. The current developed MMG still however uses existing conventional sensors.
