FAIR TIME AGAIN

"The Six Star Show," a 21-screen slide presentation of the opportunities provided Hoosiers and services furnished the state by the six state universities, is

the centerpiece of the annual report made by the universities to patrons of the Indiana State Fair. On a small stage in front of the 21 screens various groups from the universities will entertain and give demonstratio~s. Saturday is Indiana University Day, and I.U. will emphasize the School of Medicine in this 75th anniversary year by presenting demonstrations on "The Breathalyzer,"

"Respiratory Therapy," "Pulmonary Lung Function," and "Learning from Plaster People." Howard B. Morris of the IUPUI News Bureau is the coordinator for the entire exhibit.

MINORITY, DENTAL ASSISTANT PROGRAMS, FUNDED

Minority recruitment and training of dental hygienists and dental assistants will be stepped up by the School of Dentistry through two grants from HEW.

According to Dean Ralph E. McDonald the minority recruitment program will be funded for approximately $160,000 over the next three years and a $406,172 grant will support the expanded functions training for more than 300 dental hygiene and dental assisting students on five I.U. campuses during the next two years.

ACTIVITIES CALENDAR AVAILABLE

The 1978-79 IUPUI Activities Calendar is ready for free distribution. It

lists scheduled activities at IUPUI with room to add new ~vents. The IU Foundation publishes the calendar as a service to all units at IUPUI. It is available from the Foundation Office, from Student Activities Offices, and from the Publications/

Info~·mation Services. They will be sent through campus mail to all who request them. 'rhe calendar was produced by the Publications Office.

2 BIT DAY THURSDAY

The Union Building will be the scene of "2 Bit Day" beginning at 11 a.m.

Thursday. Balloons and the IUPUI Calliope will add to the carnival

atmosphere which will feature food such as knackwurst, bratwurst, Italian sausage, all on a stick; corn on the cob, cotton candy, ice cream, soft drinks and other goodies at 25 cents per item. The day will end with an all-campus dance from 9 p.m. to midnight sponsored by the Student Activity Board. Other participants include the IUPUI Bookstore and IUPUI alumni.

Rain date will be the first sunny day.

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE AND SOMETIMES WHY

New Doc's--Four new residents have joined the five residents and four faculty physicians in the Family Practice Program operated by the Department of

Family Medicine on the first floor of Long Hospital. New residents and the schools from which they received their M.D. degrees are: Karen Bradley, Loyola Stritch, Chicago; Emil Balasandiran, University of Ceylon; and Charles McCalla IV, and Donald Rockey, both I.U.

Grand Rounds--Dr. Philip Snodgrass will speak on "Chronic Update Pancreatitis"

at Department of Medicine Grand Rounds at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday in Myers Auditorium of Wishard Hospital.

Physiology Seminar--"Microvascular Disturbances in Diabetes" by Dr. Glenn Bohlen, assistant professor of Physiology, Room 205 Medicial Science Building, 4 p.m. Monday, August 28.

Displays--Pharmacy displays this week will be Davis & Geck, Monday; Savage

Laboratories, Wednesday, and Ayerst Laboratories, Friday in University Hospital.

Riker Laboratories will be at Riley on Wednesday. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Appropriate Technology Forum--Appropriate technology, involving scientific solutions best suited to the specific local conditions, will be the subject of a Regional Forum to be held at the Indiana Convention-Exposition Center on Oct.

Rogers, associate professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. ICFAR staff members will work with him in developing the program. It is expected to draw

up to 500 representatives from state and local governments, small business, professional societies, citizens and consumer groups, universities and technical schools, and interested individuals from a six state area. Those interested in more information about the forum may contact Betsy Feingold at Ext. 4508.

Author--Dr. Jan Shipps, associate professor of history and religious studies at IUPUI is author of an article published last week by Christian Century

magazine explaining the June 9 revelation to the Mormon Church to accept blacks to the ranks of the Mormon priesthood as "the expansion of the work of the Lord over the earth" rather than a reaction to American political and social pressures.

Dr. Shipps is president-elect of the 900-member Mormon History As.sociation.

More--The recently released volume by W.B. Saunders Co., Controversy in Psychiatry, contains chapters written by Dr. Hugh C. Hendrie, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, and Dr. Eugene E. Levitt, director of the Section of Psychology of the Department.

And More--The Chronicle of Higher Education for July 3, 1978, reviewed the Bakke decision, and in its editorial section, "Point of View", it reviewed the leading articles about it and the problem. Among the excerpts shown was

I.U. Law School-Indianapolis, Dean William F. Harvey's article in National Review.

Registration--Registration continues for adult, non-credit courses at the

Continuing Studies office on the 38th Street Campus. Schedules were distributed last week. The free schedules and information are available at Ext. 4501. Most classes start in September.

Museum Time--A brochure, "What's to see and do in Indianapolis?", has been

published by IMPACT, the association of Indianapolis area museums. Each museum, from art to zoo, is included in the free handy pocket-size folder. Made possible by a matching grant from the Tourism Development Division of the Indiana Department of Commerce, it will be distributed by the Division, area hotels, motels, restaurants, and IMPACT members, and may be obtained by mail by writing the Public Relations

On Stage--Broad Ripple Theatre Center director Diane Malone has announced that WomanShine Productions will present Woman's Word, their acclaimed collection of works by and about women, Friday through Sunday at the center, 916 Westfield Boulevard. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Tickets may be reserved by calling 253-2072.

To Retire--Francis L. Sonday, Ph.D., director of the Audiology and Speech Clinic for many years, will retire September 1. His tenure of 25 years spans one-third of the Medical Center history. His many friends are invited to greet him Thursday, August 31, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Riley A50-55.

In Memoriam--Friends have been saddened to learn of the death on August 13 in Salisbury, England, of Dr. Mary Pinkerton. Dr. Pinkerton was formerly assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry.

Medical Library Hours--Effective August 21, the School of Medicine Library hours for the academic year are: Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.;

Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Holiday and vacation schedules will be listed in the Green Sheet and posted at the Library entrance.

Hours for the Labor Day weekend will be: Saturday, September 2 and Monday, September 4, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, September 3, 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Normal schedule resumes Tuesday.

High School Registration--Registration for the High School and G.E.D. Program will be conducted Wednesday and Thursday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in Room C-424 of University Hospital. Anyone interested in participating in either program

should attend one of these sessions. For further information call the Department of Human Resource Development, Ext. 8119.

Stay Tuned--WTHR (13) will present a documentary on the city of Indianapolis, August 29, 8:30 p.m. Included will be some comments from Vice President Glenn W.
