The proposed program is a logical next step in fulfilling the academic mission of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. However, because "rehabilitation science" is a relatively new discipline and the school's mission has changed radically in the past four years to meet national needs for health and rehabilitation science education, the following abbreviated history and academic construct is offered as a framework within which to understand the program proposal. Demonstrate improvement of their knowledge base in health and rehabilitation sciences from an interdisciplinary perspective.

Such policies and procedures include the formal application to the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences for admission to the Ph.D. A post-graduate degree in health and rehabilitation sciences or a related health care discipline is required. The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences will apply for federal funds currently available for doctoral education in rehabilitation.

Health and Rehabilitation Science Areas of Concentration (30 credits) Students will take 30 credit hours of courses in one of three selected areas of concentration as described in the 1997 Institute of Medicine report entitled Enabling America. The areas are as follows with an example of a faculty in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. The student must submit a written proposal for original scientific work that makes a significant contribution to research in the health and rehabilitation sciences.

An original written dissertation that will make a significant contribution to research in the health and rehabilitation sciences is expected.

Electives (6 credits)

Students pursuing doctoral and master's degrees on campus may pursue a minor in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Students must spend a minimum of 15 credits in health and rehabilitation sciences, including the following core courses. SHRS W690: Dissertation Proposal in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (3 credits) GRAD N802: Techniques for Effective Grant Writing (3 credits).

Third Year Spring Semester (8 credits) SHRS W690: Dissertation in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (8 credits) Fourth Year Fall Semester (8 credits) SHRS W690: Dissertation in Health and. Appointment: Full professor at the Department of Physical Therapy and Associate Assistant Professor at the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Support faculty in the Faculty of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences are available to participate in committees to provide specific expertise in the field of health and rehabilitation sciences. An affiliated faculty that has an existing interface with the Faculty of Health and Rehabilitation and is available to provide research support.

Appointment: Full Professor and Head, Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine. The individual will hold a split appointment between the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences and Engineering Research (50%) and the Department of Health Sciences, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Classes can be adapted to meet the needs of the School of Health and Rehabilitation curriculum.

It is also important to note that the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences has recruited new faculty over the past three years with postdoctoral training that will further enhance the school's future external funding, including the following: Over several In recent years since its restructuring, the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences has introduced an aggressive external funding initiative that will continue to develop in support of a Ph.D.

Program Rationale

Rehabilitation Sciences aims to develop and maintain a scientific and competent faculty who will provide excellence in the teaching/learning process for programs in areas related to healthcare professions; the advancement of knowledge through research, scholarship and creative activities, and the development of a lifelong commitment to community involvement at local, national and international levels. Describe the context in which we plan a PhD: Indiana life sciences, IOM report, peer institutions; Define the organizational structure and relationship with the Indiana Center for Rehabilitation Sciences and Engineering Research;

The report of the external review team was received in March 2007 and their recommendations have been incorporated into this document. The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is the only school of its kind in the state of Indiana, with a major focus on rehabilitation education and research. This degree program has the potential to bring new resources to the University, significantly expand the research base in nutrition and rehabilitation fields, and bring favorable publicity to the University.

The introduction of a minor in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences will enhance existing Indiana University degrees. Letters of support for the program have been received from deans across campus who are either members of the IUPUI Council of Health Deans or from schools/departments likely to have a Ph.D. The program will enhance the other programs whose faculty and students pursue interests in health and rehabilitation sciences in conjunction with their primary lines of research.

Twenty-seven (27) current School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences graduate students and adjunct faculty expressed interest in the Ph.D. There is a shortage of qualified faculty at the doctoral level in the health and rehabilitation sciences fields. A 2005 national survey of 116 physical therapy educational programs yielded the following data: Of the 116 programs, nearly half (52) searched for faculty in that one year.

A summary of the summit and its recommendations was included in the American Journal of Physical. This program will comply with accreditation guidelines of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. At the request of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, an external review team was appointed to review a draft of the Ph.D.
