writer's
views
as to the propriety ofrecognizing
the variouswell-marked component forms
of theternatum^voup
as full spe- cies, in those instances inwhich intermediates
arenot known, were expressed

slenderdelicateplant of tlie icrnatum group, 20-30 cm. higli,brandl- ingat orabovethe surface of the ground.Stem
2-3.5cm.long,2-3mm.
in diameter, pale or salmon-colored, clothed belowwith afibrousslieatliand
emittingnumerous
stoutspreading roots. Sterile division bright green, short- or frequently long-petiolate (average 2.5cm.), about 12cm. broadby
11cm. long, fully tripinnate,or quadripinnatifidas to the basal portion of the lowermostlateral divisions,variable inoutline butcommonly
sul)-pentagonal, the lateraldivisions usually alternate; ultimatesegments (in normal mature plants) approximate, or
somewhat
distant, alternate, ob- lique,broadlyobovate, 5-10mm.
broad, subequallyand
stronglycuneateto anarrow adnatebase, rarelywithashallowlaterallobe; margins unequallyand
conspicuouslytiuibriate,particularly inthelargerspecimens; texture thin,flaccid,the veins readilyperceptible. Sporophyll averaging 22 cm.in length,slender,often arcuate or even flexuose,uniformlyof adecided salmon color (excepting the apical third) as are also the
main
vascular partsof thesteriledivision; panicle 7-10cm.long,bipinnate orrarelytri- pinnate, basalbranchaveraging3.5cm.inlength.Known
to the writer onlyfrom the vicinityof Mobile,Alabama,and

six orseven miles west of thatcity.Of
these specimens, No.510,782,U.S.NationalHerbarium,collected inAugust,1905, is designated as type.The
only other material seen is a single sheet of small plantscollectedsomewhere
inthevicinityofMobileby
thelate Dr.Chas.Mohr,who
regardedthem
as"an
ambiguousform" which he was
unableto place withcertainty.The

all the material ofthisplant [B.Alabamensf] hasbeen found atSpringHill. * * *The

between B.obliquumand
B. hiter-natum.
From
the former,whichinatypical stateis apparently altogether wanting from Alabama,it differs conspicuously inits lax habit,usually longer-stalked divisionsand
short rounded segments.From
the latter species,which
iswellknown
foritsuniqueseasonal character{i.e.fruiting in earlyspring), itdeparts otherwise inthe greatersizeofallitsparts,its non-prostratehabit,decidedlythinnertextureand
lessdivaricatebranch- ing. Inaway, however, dwarfedplants of B.A
lahamenseand uncommonly
robust specimensof B. biternatum simulate each other rather closely
and
offera possible suggestionas totheoriginofthelatter. Furtherdiscussion oftheirrelationship
may
wellbedeferreduntilthe publication ofa paperwhich
Mr.Dukes
has prepared, descriptive of B. biternalum asit occurs in Alabama, with particular reference toitspeculiar seasonal appearance.But
whatever theirphytogenymay
have been itappearsscarcelyopen
to question that thetwo
areatthe presenttimespecifically distinct.Incidentallyit
