A NEW FERN FROM PORTO RICO.
BY WILLIAM

Bypermission of theSecretary oftheSmithsonianInstitution.
The name Aspidium Krugii Kuhn
iscitedby Krug
atpage 112
ofEngler's Botanische
Jahrbiicher,volume
24, 1897,under Aspidium
rhizophyllum, ashaving been given
toseven numbers
of
Porto Rican specimens
collectedby
Sintenisand
distributedamong
various herbaria.Apparently Kuhn had thought
hisplant
distinct;and
its reference to thewell-known Jamaican A.
rhizophyllumwas probably due
to thefact that certain ofhisunpublished
notesand manuscripts, which
largelyformed
the basis ofKrug's paper on West Indian
ferns,passed through
thehands
ofDr.
Christ,and
that the latter'sjudgment was
followed.In naming
a collection ofPorto Rican
fernsnot long ago we
perceived the
Porto Rican plant
to be readily distinguishablefrom
itsnear
ally,and we purpose
to soregard
it.The name Aspidium Krugii having been merely
listedcan not be regarded
as published.Polystichum
Krugii sp.nov.Differs from P. rhizophyllum in its thinner texture, manifest venation, very
much
shorter stipes, longerand
narrower fronds, pinnae narrowerand
lessobtuse (theupperones greatlyreduced but mostlydistinct),and
especially in hav.ing the fructification confined to the greatly elongated (10-12 cm.)linearcaudate apex
